The guys from the Punch Drunk Critics blog were at Horrorfind Weekend in Hunt Valley, Maryland this weekend, and they got a few minutes with actor Danny Trejo to try their best to get any new information out of him in regards to his next movie "MacHete". For whatever reason, they asked him about "Sin City 2" and basically got a stock answer before Trejo revealed that "we're doing Predators next," which makes one assume Trejo will be appearing in Robert Rodriguez's "Predators", the Rodriguez-produced relaunch to be directed by Nimrod Antal ("Vacancy"). Of course, this is not anything too groundbreaking since Trejo has appeared in just about every movie Rodriguez has been involved with going back to El Mariachi, but it does confirm that they're moving forward with the casting on the... »

Just last night, my friend Patches alerted me via a text-based cellular message that Robert Rodriguez and Danny Trejo were downing some brews over at a local bar called Nomad. And who could blame them? Monday night is $1 Tecate night. The word spreading through the bar was that they were celebrating wrapping - either a scene or, less likely, the whole damned Machete. Still no word on whether Ethan Maniquis was there co-drinking with Rodriguez, though. And with that, we've now become Gawker. We can officially shut down. Rodriguez and company can also shut down their search for distribution, because Sony has purchased the bulk of international distribution rights to the flick, continuing a partnership built by their involvement with El Mariachi and the other Mexico trilogy films. If anyone asks, my new reason for heading out to the bars is to catch an interview with the filmmaker. That sounds like a good enough excuse right? I've »

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group has acquired most international distribution rights for Robert Rodriguez's MacHete>, unfortunately that doesn't do much for us here in the States. Machete is the feature-length version of the trailer that originally appeared in Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's Grindhouse. The pic is in production in Austin, Texas, with a cast that includes Danny Trejo, Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Cheech Marin, Michelle Rodriguez and Rose McGowan. Its story centers on a former Mexican police officer who turns the tables on the masterminds who double-crossed him. Rodriguez, who wrote the screenplay, co-directs with Ethan Maniquis. Sony worked with Rodriguez on the so-called Mexico Trilogy -- El Mariachi, Desperado and Once Upon a Time in Mexico. »

Starting with Spy Kids in 2001, writer-director (and editor, cinematographer, composer, etc.) Robert Rodriguez has carved out a healthy second career making kid movies to complement the adult genre movies that made him famous, starting with his low-budget breakthrough El Mariachi. But the same hand clearly guides all Rodriguez’s movies, and it delights in over-the-top moments—whether it’s the ultra-violence of Sin City or a super-intelligent baby battling a crocodile in his new film, Shorts. That reigning sensibility doesn’t always care whether the seams show. At their best, Rodriguez’s movies feel handcrafted. At their worst, they ... »

Director Robert Rodriguez is well-known for making genre movies like Sin City and the upcoming Machete, but he's also the creator of popular kid movies like the Spy Kids series. His latest venture, Shorts, follows the adventures of a young boy who finds a rock that can grant wishes. Rodriguez explained the genesis of the movie to Moviesonline: We have a castle turret [in my house]. Part of the house that I'd built thinking, 10 years ago when I built it, some day I was going to use it as a set for a movie with my kids when I had kids and then it ended up happening with this. I was going to shoot it like El Mariachi in my backyard and come up with a storyline later. When my son came up with the idea of doing a Little Rascals type movie, of course, that was something I had thought of doing »

Robert Rodriguez is known as Hollywood's Diy filmmaker, having "shot, chopped, and scored" his own films from El Mariachi to his 2007 collaboration with Quentin Tarantino, Planet Terror. This August, he'll blaze another trail -- movie making as family bonding project -- with the kid flick Shorts, which Rodriguez conceived largely in collaboration with his own children. We met the soft-spoken auteur in a secluded room hidden within the San Diego Convention Center to talk about his favorite films and learn more about how the imaginations of his son led to his most family-friendly film since Spy Kids 3D and... »

Thanks to 21st-century genre hits such as Saw, the Hills Have Eyes remake and Hostel, horror fans have witnessed a renaissance of “grindhouse” filmmaking, which invokes the brutality, sleaze and over-the-top camp that pervaded many ‘70s and early-’80s cult classics. But while these depictions of torture and despair have enthralled audiences and garnered big bucks at the box office, a low-budget affair like Header (out this week on DVD from Synapse Films) has not only managed to sneak under the industry radar with its gruesome plotline, but practically usurps the likes of Hostel in shock value.
The backwoods and its mysterious inhabitants always stir up a sense of dread in a horror film. But Header, a faithful rendition of the 1995 novella by extreme-fiction scribe Edward Lee, transforms the dense forestry into a twisted playground abounding with unholy familial bonds, archaic traditions and the unspeakable titular act, which serves as the film’s foundation. »

From out of the constantly whirling maelstrom that is Robert Rodriguez' production roster, suddenly comes Machete, the long-promised movie extrapolated from his fake Grindhouse trailer, starring Danny Trejo. In an interview with Gordon and The Whale, Trejo states that he's just had the nod from Rodriguez that shooting starts in five weeks, which actually chimes with plans that Rodriguez outlined in March (although what with Predators, Sin City 2, The Jetsons, Nervewrackers, and Red Sonja also currently stacking up at chez Rodriguez, those claims were easily overlooked and/or dismissed.)No details on casting, or indeed anything at all yet, so it's unclear whether the film will follow the trailer's plot of political assassinations, framings and double-crosses. Can we expect to see Cheech Marin as a gun-toting priest ("God has mercy. I don't.")? We certainly hope so. But some good old fashioned gratuitous violence and nudity are practically guaranteed. »

Back in April when we told you about Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, From Dusk Til Dawn) scripting a reboot of the slighly dormant Predator franchise, reader response was overwhelmingly Positive, much the opposite of the usual reboot reaction.
In recent weeks, many sites have been buzzing about a supposed offer made by Rodriguez to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to reprise his role from the 1987 original when Predators begins rolling. That raised the question of whether or not the new film would be a sequel, as opposed to the reboot.
Leave it to fellow Austinite Harry Knowles over at Ain't It Cool News to get to the bottom of this from the mouth of the El Mariachi director himself...
Online news is amazing, much more exciting than real life!
There are so many sites saying that I'm actively pursuing Arnold!
Feels like all i have to do is sit here, and let the websites do the work! »

This time they f**ked with the right Mexican!
When I wrote about Eli Roth cooking up a feature helping of Thanksgiving, I couldn't help but think about Machete, and wish he was heading for the big screen. Just a week later, my wish has been granted! If only that could happen every day. Variety reports that Robert Rodriguez has written a script for Machete, and hopes to grab Danny Trejo and start production this June in Austin. But he won't helm this alone; this time around, he's grabbing longtime editor Ethan Maniquis to co-direct.
This blissful non-studio film (his first since El Mariachi) will follow Machete, a Mexican ex-Federale who hides as a day laborer until he gets "double-crossed by a corrupt state senator." He is, of course, also an expert knife-wielder and dude who can do some stunning things with a bike and a gun.
But that's not all. »

A good thing too, the last "Aliens vs. Predator" spawn was the closest thing to watching a straight-to-video teen "Wrong Turn" horror. One will remember the trailer for "Machete" which was part of "Grindhouse" with the blade-toting Danny Trejo and the statement "This time, they f#cked with the wrong Mexican." A June start date in Austin is anticipated and the film will be financed and produced by Overnight Productions. Rodriguez writes "Machete" which tells of a Mexican former federale who is double-crossed by a corrupt state senator. This marks the first non-studio release since "El Mariachi" that Rodriguez will direct. Rodriguez has written "Predators" for Fox. There are no details on what's in store for this one. »

Variety reports that Robert Rodriguez has scripted a Predator sequel for 20th Century Fox, and is also set to at last turn his MacHete trailer from Grindhouse into a feature. Danny Trejo will reprise his role as a vengeful Mexican tough guy in the latter, which will be produced as an independent project (the filmmaker's first since El Mariachi) by Overnight Productions.
Rodriguez scripted MacHete and will co-direct it with his longtime editor Ethan Maniquis; the film is scheduled to roll in June on the filmmaker's home turf of Austin, TX. Meanwhile, his Predators script is intended to relaunch the franchise featuring the human-hunting extraterrestrial, most recently seen sharing the screen with Fox's Aliens. The report doesn't state whether Rodriguez will direct Predators as well; he's still also set to helm the futuristic action thriller Nerveracker for Dimension Films, which has already announced an April 16, 2010 release date for that movie. »
