Once, I read a review that said this movie would have been more believable with younger actors. I disagree. The premise seemed MORE believable with older actors because they would be more desperate for find true love.
Steve Martin builds a house for Dana Dulaney, who he has been obsessed with since grade school. Thinking him crazy and unstable, she flatly says no to his marriage proposal in front of this one-of-a-kind house.
Martin meets Hawn, a pathological liar, in a restaurant where Hawn, a waitress, is pretending to be Bulgarian, complete with accent, to add "ambiance" and great tips, she adds. Martin asks to use her phone in her apartment above the restaurant and a one-night-stand ensues...or so Martin thinks.
He leaves a napkin behind with a sketch of the house. You literally see the light bulb go off in Hawn's head and she grabs a Greyhound to Martin's little town where is mistaken as Martin's fiancee...she thinks why not? and continues to lie.
The resulting chaos is campy and fun. It is a mindless romp with two great comedians at the helm.
