Interview: Kevin Heffernan Cooks Up The Slammin’ Salmon

13 December 2009 6:37 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

You won’t find Broken Lizard on many of the ubiquitous decade wrap-ups that have begun to permeate the blogosphere, but in Super Troopers and Beerfest the troupe made their mark on comedies in the ‘00s. Both films have become cult classics with significant re-watch value, each a fine rendition of the art of big, broad, stupid frat boy humor. In The Slammin’ Salmon, their latest, the boys (Kevin Heffernan, Jay Chandrasekhar, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske) play waiters engaged in a Glengarry Glen Ross like competition over one night at a restaurant owned by “Slammin” Cleon Salmon (Michael Clarke Duncan), an ex-boxing champ. It’s out in theaters this weekend in the following markets: Austin, New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Milwaukee, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Portland, Washington D.C. and Seattle. Should it perform well expect a relatively quick expansion. Film School Rejects spoke with Kevin Heffernan, aka Farva, about »

Alec Baldwin: don't be a closer

2 December 2009 4:36 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Last month, The Guardian launched a campaign to rescue Nicolas Cage. Today, we're coming to the aid of Alec Baldwin

Yesterday's news that Alec Baldwin plans to quit acting wasn't particularly surprising (it's a promise he's made several times before). But it was, still, saddening. When other actors threaten to leave the profession - invariably because their egos have convinced them that they'd make brilliant politicians - you know that the giant salary and global adoration will always pull them back in.

But Baldwin's announcement was depressing not just because he seems convinced of his intentions this time, but because he's arguably one of the best actors around. To lose him purely because he can, sometimes, be a bit of a sourpuss borders on the tragic.

Fortunately he's not threatening to retire until 2012, so we've got plenty of time to change his mind. By hook or by crook, we need »

Alec Baldwin Says He’s Done with Acting

30 November 2009 5:57 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

In a recent interview with Men’s Journal [via Reuters], Alec Baldwin, currently one of the most (intentionally) funny men on television right now, says he’ll be retiring from acting after 2012.  He’s pretty down on himself in the piece saying that his entire film acting career has been a failure. “I consider my entire movie career a complete failure,” he told Men’s Journal. “The goal of movie-making is to star in a film where your performance drives the film, and the film is either a soaring critical or commercial success, and I never had that.” I’m sorry that Baldwin uses that metric because he’s not only an insanely talented comedian, but when most people think of the film version of Glengarry Glen Ross, his single scene in the film immediately comes to mind.  He also picked up a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his performance in 2003’s »

Scarlett Johansson debuting on Broadway in Tony-winning 'A View From the Bridge'

27 October 2009 2:36 PM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

Scarlett Johannson will be 25 when she makes her Broadway debut this December as lovesick teenager Catherine in "A View From the Bridge." This production -- co-starring Tony Award winner Liev Schrieber ("Glengarry Glen Ross") as her lustful uncle Eddie -- is the third rialto revival of Arthur Miller's 1955 domestic drama. The 1997 Roundabout production of "Bridge" (pictured here) won the Tony for best revival. Brittany Murphy -- who had just turned 20 -- played the nymphet. While she earned no accolades, Anthony Lapaglia as Eddie won the lead actor Tony while Allison Janney picked up a nod as his long-suffering wife, Beatrice. Scarlett Johansson to Make Broadway Debut

Scarlett Johansson is the latest actress to make her Broadway debut. The 24-year old leading lady will be starring in the stage revival of Arthur Miller’s A View From the Bridge. According to Variety, Scarlett will star opposite Liev Schreiber, who has done several Broadway productions. As you remember, Schreiber won a Tony Award for his performance in the 2005 revival of David Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross. Not a bad person for Scarlett to co-star with for her first time! The show will run for 14 weeks beginning in December for previews, then making its formal »

Can divisive 'Oleanna' unite Tony voters?

12 October 2009 11:02 AM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

David Mamet likes to provoke audiences so he should be pleased with the divided critical response to the Broadway revival of "Oleanna." This battle of the sexes was a huge hit off Broadway in 1992 but this production marks its first Broadway staging. The stars of this version of "Oleanna" are Bill Pullman -- who earned a Drama Desk nod for his only other Broadway appearance in 2002's "The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?" -- and rialto newcomer Julia Stiles. Stiles starred in an acclaimed 2004 London production of "Oleanna" opposite Aaron Eckhart and she and Pullman appeared in this same staging earlier this year in Los Angeles. Mamet is a prolific writer with half a dozen works having premiered on Broadway and another -- "Race" -- opening this December. Just two of these -- "Glengarry Glen Ross" and "Speed-the-Plow" -- contended for best play at the Tony Awards. Though "Glengarry Glen Ross »

Online, We're the Sales Leads and the Cookies are the Closers

9 October 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | Fast Company | See recent Fast Company news »

My son plays some pretty obscure online games. You have to leave the beaten track to find them. About six months ago he was playing one in my dungeon office at home, where I was using hypnosis to coax ideas out of a blank piece of paper. We had this conversation.

Him: Did you do this ad for (Respectable Upscale Client)? With the blind chameleon?

Me: Yup. We did that.

Him: Oh.

(Twenty minute pause.)

Me: Why do you ask?

Him: It's boring. Oh snap--gotcha! High five!

Me: What site are you on?

Him: Pimped-Out Mutants Slaughterpit 6.

To my son, fourteen with a gentle soul, all games are a version of the same game. Chess, NBA, Slaughterpit. He's interested in the pattern more than the scenario, a valuable life skill. One thing he's not interested in is anything I'm interested in. So what was the Respectable Upscale Client doing in a neighborhood like Slaughterpit? »

Disney Pulls Chair Out From Beneath Mamet’s Remake of Anne Frank

25 September 2009 12:43 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Sometimes there is a project that seems so incongruent with the predilections of a director or writer that the entire concept conjugally fits together like the left side and right side of the brain. That seems like the best way to describe David Mamet, who is known for the circuitous, urban, and vulgar dialogue in movies such as “Glengarry Glen Ross” and “Wag the Dog”, and his interest in “The Diary of Anne Frank”. Rather than creating a kind of Mobius strip, in which parts of the movie twist into each other, his intentions seemed straightforward. The movie is described as “a pro-Israel exploration of anti-Semitism movie set in contemporary times”. Unfortunately, Sharon Waxman of The Wrap reports that, with the current state Disney is in after the departure of Dick Cook, the project has been put in turnaround.  An executive is quoted as saying: “It’s very intense, and dark and scary. »

Disney Rejects David Mamet's Version of Anne Frank

25 September 2009 5:46 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

About six weeks ago, Disney announced that it was considering a new movie based on The Diary of Anne Frank, with David Mamet to direct. Like most people, we had only one thought: David Mamet and Disney?!

The acclaimed director and playwright — who earned a Pulitzer Prize for Glengarry Glen Ross and a Best Screenplay Oscar nomination for Wag the Dog — is famous for his poetic use of vile language and his unsparing examination of racial and sexual politics, hardly family-friendly stuff. It seemed like a match made in hell, and yesterday, Disney finally seemed to realize it.

The Wrap reports that the studio officially announced that they are abandoning the project. One executive made a statement to the press:

It's very intense, and dark and scary. It's not a film version of The Diary of Anne Frank. The story evolved into something more intense.

Apparently, what Mamet had in mind was a complete reimagining. »

Mamet's Anne Frank Project Ditched for Being 'Too Dark'

24 September 2009 2:27 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Back in August we found out about the unlikely pairing of writer/director David Mamet (Glengarry Glen Ross, Redbelt) and Disney on a remake of The Diary of Anne Frank. But with the recent shake up that's been going down at Disney after Dick Cook exited the studio, it looks like Mamet's take on the story isn't happening anymore. Sharon Waxman over at The Wrap says the picture, "developed by the studio’s chief of production, Oren Aviv... was recently rejected by the studio as 'too dark' and put in turnaround."  Sure it's a dark story already, but it sounds like Mamet's take was just too far out there for the new studio execs. Apparently the story isn't simply a re-telling of the story chronicled in the 15-year-old Holocaust victim's diary, but rather the story is "about a contemporary Jewish girl who goes to Israel and learns about the traumas of suicide bombing. »

An Exclusive Interview with Robert Buckley

24 September 2009 1:17 PM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Earlier today, The CW announced it has picked up One Tree Hill for a full season.

To many fans of the show, this is exciting for one huge reason: more Robert Buckley!

The former Lipstick Jungle star has come aboard the long-time series in the role of Clay. In an exclusive interview, he tells TV Fanatic about joining the cast, as well as not wearing a shirt...

TV Fanatic: Are you wearing a shirt right now?

Robert Buckley: Yes.

TV Fanatic: Does it ever bother you that you're almost as well known for your literal body of work as for your acting skills?

Buckley: No, because it was never to the detriment of my performance. Going back to Lipstick Jungle, I know I received compliments on the superficial, so to speak, but it was never said in a way that implied I lacked talent as an actor.

That being said, »

David Mamet Writing About Anne Frank

12 August 2009 10:37 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Playwright and screenwriter David Mamet is working a screenplay based on the diary of Anne Frank.  The Disney film will be based on her writing, a 1950’s play about her, and Mamet’s take on the story.

The diary of Anne Frank was given to her on June 12, 1942 (her 13th birthday) and chronicles her life until August 1944 during World War II and the Holocaust.  Her family went into hiding that July and after two years in a secret enclosure were betrayed to Nazi forces.  Frank died at the age of 15 in a German concentration camp.

According to Variety, Mament will produce alongside Andrew Braunsberg, who spent a year securing the rights from Anne Frank’s estate as well as the original play’s representation.

Mamet’s involvement (especially with Disney) is curious because typically his characters are intense males, for example his Pulitzer Prize-winning Glengarry Glen Ross and an executive »

David Mamet Penning New Anne Frank Film

12 August 2009 4:48 PM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

This year the film version of The Diary of Anne Frank is celebrating its 50th anniversary on DVD and Blu-ray Disc. Now there is more reason to celebrate the young girl's legacy. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has hired David Mamet to pen a screenplay based on Anne's original diary, a 1950s play on the subject, and Mamet's own interpretation. Mamet is best known for writing the 1984 play Glengarry Glen Ross which became a staple in schools and landed the playwright a Pulitzer Prize. More recently he conceived the show The Unit about Us uncover operatives. Disney has not set a timetable for the new Anne Frank film to appear but a best guess would be late 2010 or 2011. »

David Mamet Wants To Re-Telll Anne Frank's Story

12 August 2009 8:54 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

"David Mamet's Anne Frank" sounds like the kind of joke production that would pop up on an episode of Entourage, along the lines of James Cameron's Aquaman. But oh dear, this production is very, very real. Mamet, who wrote Glengarry Glen Ross and recently wrote and directed the martial arts drama Redbelt, will be directing a new version of Anne Frank's story-- for Disney, no less. Variety writes that the film will be based both on Frank's diary and the stage adaptation by Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich. Perhaps frighteningly, Mamet will also add some of his own spin to the story, possibly framing it as "a young girl's rite of passage." Everyone who read the book in eighth grade remembers that, in addition to insights on the Holocaust and family life, Frank's diary focused on things that any 13-year-old girl would, from raging adolescent hormones to »

Disney to Produce New Diary of Anne Frank Movie, David Mamet To Direct

12 August 2009 6:08 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Disney has acquired the rights to The Diary of Anne Frank and plans to make a new movie adaptation with David Mamet, according to Variety.

Frank's diary chronicles her time in hiding from the Nazis. She and several family members resided in a secret attic in Amsterdam for two years before being captured and sent to concentration camps. Frank died just a few months before the end of World War II in May 1945. Her family published the diary posthumously, and it has since sold many millions of copies in all major languages.

Mamet is perhaps most famous as a playwright, earning a Pulitzer Prize for Glengarry Glen Ross, which was adapted for the screen in 1992. He directed The Spanish Prisoner, Heist, and State and Main, and also earned a Best Screenplay Oscar nomination for Wag the Dog (1997).

Reportedly, Mamet will add his own interpretation, drawing from both the original diary »
