Oscar-winning cinematographer Sven Nykvist, best known for his collaborations with Ingmar Bergman, died Wednesday in Stockholm, his son told the Associated Press. He was 83 "He was called 'the master of light' because of the moods and atmospheres he could create with light. It was a near impossibility to create the moods he created," his son, Carl-Gustaf Nykvist, said. Nykvist won Oscars in 1973 for the Bergman films Cries and Whispers (1973) and Fanny and Alexander (1982). He was also the cinematographer on such other film classics as Louis Malle's Pretty Baby (1978), Philip Kaufman's The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988), Woody Allen's Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989), Richard Attenborough's Chaplin (1992), Nora Ephron's Sleepless in Seattle, (1993), and Lasse Hallstrom's What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993).
