This is a confusing movie I watched as a kid and tried to understand it without any bigger luck. It's true that 'boring' was the only word I could find to describe it back then. Luckily I got my second chance few days ago. Mika Kaurismäki directed "Amazon" in 1990. Just a year earlier Robert Davi played one of the most hardest and toughest villains in a history of James Bond films in "Licence to kill". I guess he wanted to be in a more modest movie for a change. "Amazon" isn't really good as an adventure film and although it obviously means good when it tries to tell something about Indians and the destruction of the forest it has a big trouble of actually getting to it's big ecological point. Still, there's something awfully fascinating about this movie. I can't quite put my hands on what it is but there's something about the ambience and odd chemistry between Väänänen and Davi that I love. I don't know if "Amazon" would interest me without Robert Davi's excellent performance as Dan (very likely it wouldn't) but all and all, I like the movie and I have to admit it's one of those flicks that deserves even couple of viewings. Still, I wonder how it could have been better.
