Among the upcoming screenings in the November film series of the Library of Congress’ Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation in Culpeper, Va., are vehicles for just about everyone, from Charles Chaplin to Dennis Hopper; from Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland to Robin Williams‘ voice. I’ve never seen Disney’s Aladdin, though I know it was a big hit when it came out. Robin Williams was particularly praised for his voice work as the Genie — some even went as far as to demand that the Academy come up with Oscars for best voice performance. No one came up with that demand when Charles Chaplin’s The Circus was released, perhaps because the film has no audible dialogue. I’m not a big [...] »

Night at the Museum 2 is exactly what a Hollywood sequel needs to be. Bigger, louder, filled with more famous faces and almost the same story as the first. It is on its way to eclipsing the success of the first and it hits Blu-ray and DVD next week.
Ben Stiller gathers his Natm cohort as they take their mix of slapstick and Scooby Doo to Washington D.C. where the Smithsonian archives are bought to life by the power of Ahkmenrah’s Tablet. Shawn Levy’s family friendly Night at the Museum grossed nearly $600m worldwide so a sequel was fairly inevitable and in these risk aversive climate the Battle of the Smithsonian needed only to rekindle the comedic chaos and broad dramatic strokes of the original to succeed.
It’s no surprise that the sequel does not stray from this path, and this is a blessing and a curse. »

Chicago – When did “gentleness” first become “unhip” in children’s films? Practically every studio in America, with the exception of Pixar, feels the need to make their “all ages” entertainment as abrasive, dumb and crude as their escapism targeted at teens and simple-minded adults. What’s the difference between a picture like “G-Force” and “Transformers”? A handful of swears and a few excessive shots of Megan Fox’s midriff. Kids movies in America can get away with endless mean-spirited gags and bathroom humor, just as long as there’s a sticky moral tacked on to the end. The “Shrek” series flourished under this principle, and so does “Ice Age.”
Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0
Yet while DreamWorks has found financial success with multiple franchises (“Shrek,” “Madagascar,” “Kung Fu Panda”), Blue Sky Studios still insists on focusing most of its moviemaking efforts on the decade-old premise of prehistoric creatures riffing through an arctic wasteland. »

It's been quite a while since Disney treated audiences to an animated classic without the glitz and glam of CGI and 3-D. Don't get me wrong—technology is great, but when it comes to that nostalgic feeling of watching cartoons from the good ol' days, there's nothing like classics such as Beauty and the Beast or Lady and the Tramp to dig up those treasured childhood memories. The creators of Princess and the Frog have leapt at the challenge of returning Disney to the warmth of the hand-drawn genre. Fandango and a few other journalists were invited to chat with directors Ron Clements and John Musker (who wrote and directed Aladdin and Little Mermaid), and we also took in some never-before-seen, extended clips from the film. Below is a look at exclusive photos from the movie with...

I’m not a fan of musicals. In theory. When I start thinking about filmed stories that ask me to be emotionally invested in people who inexplicably burst into song, my brain gets cranky like a baby who hasn’t had its nap. Why are they bursting into song? Why are all these songs so obnoxious? Are these people talking to themselves? If so, why do other people know the melody they were singing during the reprise later? Then my brain starts angrily waving its arms until it gets its bottle, which, as I overextend this metaphor past the point of comprehension, is a genre movie of some kind.
In practice, I always end up enjoying musicals, especially movies. I loved “Moulin Rouge” for its bombast and excess. It’s hard not to enjoy at least a few Disney classics, like “Aladdin.” Musicals in contemporary settings tend to lose me though. »

There once was a time when voice acting was something that A-list Hollywood actors would rarely ever waste their talent on. Whenever you needed someone to provide a voice for an animated movie, you would go to someone who specialized in such things, because let's face it, they were cheaper and probably much more versatile too. But things have been slowly changing ever since the '90s, with Robin Williams having a prominent role in Aladdin, and then blockbuster CG films like Toy Story and Antz featuring star-studded casts (the latter of which even modeled its characters to subtly resemble its stars). Nowadays it's pretty much a given that any feature-length animated CG movie will secure big name talent in order to better their chances for box office success. But is this actually a good thing? One of the concerns here is that the A-list actors are taking away jobs »
