The scene in which Len Madison confronts an elderly barber, one of the mob that lynched his father, was filmed in an functioning early-20th Century barbershop, complete with antique fixtures, located just around the corner from the town square and county courthouse in Forsyth, Georgia. This film had much to offer: good script, subject and general pacing. The key problem is the male lead, Gregory Hines. He is completely wrong for the part. He's a passable actor, but not one capable of projecting deep sincerity when it is called for, and the film suffers for it. All throughout the viewing, I kept thinking what Sidney Poiter or Denzel Washington could have done for this cinematic effort.
Annette O'Toole is, as always, stunning and quite effective within the limited parameters she's allowed to perform. This talented actress has never been given the respect from Hollywood and the film industry that she has long deserved.
Nevertheless, the film is entertaining and, in some limited aspects, thought provoking. It's worth a look.
