Avatar Featured on 60 Minutes

There comes a point in the marketing of every major motion picture where the filmmakers and studio must elevate their project to the loftiest height of visibility, namely, the attention of old folks.
James Cameron’s Avatar has certainly made an impression on the online movie geek community (that’d be us) and has certainly started to gain the attention of the general movie going public (adults and young adults). The film has even used TV spots to snag the interest of young children. But what about my grandparents? Do they know anything about Avatar?
Well, in an effort to alert my grandparents (and yours) as to Avatar’s existence, James Cameron appeared on 60 Minutes last night to chat about the film – and we have video of the segment.

NBC has just announced Chuck will finally return to the airwaves on Sunday, January 10th with back-to-back original episodes (9-11 p.m. Et) before the series moves to its regular day and time (Mondays 8-9 p.m. Et) beginning January 11. For fans of the show, this is welcome news, as it’s getting back its original time slot and it’s being paired again with Heroes.

Ever wonder where Titanic got the drive to be so unbelievably, terrifyingly successful? Turns out the highest-grossing film of all time was only looking for acceptance from its distant, enigmatic director, James Cameron – acceptance that never came. James Cameron shared his thoughts on the doomed ship flick (and apparently everything else) in an interview with Playboy, due out in December.
Cameron went on to say:
“I made Titanic because I wanted to dive to a shipwreck, not because I particularly wanted to make the movie…Titanic was about ‘f*ck you’ money…”
He might mean ‘lots of money.’ Remind me to use that on grandma when she asks how much turkey I want on Thanksgiving. Speaking of family, Cameron had this to say about his:

Wallets shook in the pant seats of moviegoers (and likely more than a few filmmakers) worldwide this week, as The New York Times released a report tallying the financial costs of James Cameron’s upcoming sci-fi epic, Avatar – and man, just looking at the raw numbers, it’s hard not to start having flashbacks to 1995 when Kevin Costner’s Waterwold topped the hill as the most expensive hype-and-flop flick ever made (did I just horribly date myself with that comment, Btw?).
Avatar will reportedly cost 20th Century Fox, James Cameron and all subsequent investors a combined total of $500 million to make and market, leaving, well, Most Of Us wondering if the film – based on a (semi) original story imagined by Cameron) – has a hope of being a box office success story, or the fate of being the next Waterworld.

Joss Whedon Offers $10,000 For Ownership Of The 'Terminator' Franchise

Word is running rampant today that the rights for the "Terminator" franchise are being sold off for a pretty penny. This isn't the first time we've heard about the impending "Terminator" sale, nor is it the first time such a change-of-hands has occurred — but it is the first time that "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" and "Dollhouse" creator Joss Whedon has made a power play for the franchise.
In an open letter, Whedon offered a tongue-in-cheek appeal for ownership of the "Terminator" property, claiming that he would gladly purchase the franchise for $10,000 as soon as today should his offer be accepted.
"The 'Terminator' story is as formative and important in our culture — and my pretend play — as any I can think of," wrote Whedon. "It's far from over."

With the hoopla over James Cameron’s upcoming sci-fi blockbuster Avatar, you wouldn’t expect a spanner to be thrown in the works at this stage in the game, less than two months from its release. But that appears to be the case, with the aforementioned trouble taking the form of an uncanny resemblance between Avatar’s plot and the plot of a 1957 Poul Anderson novella called Call Me Joe.
Some sites – such as over at io9 where this story originated – are asking the question of whether or not Avatar is a rip-off of Anderson’s sci-fi story from over five decades ago. It seems a bit strong to say “rip-off” but the evidence of the similarities between the two plots is undeniable. At a recent press junket for the TV movie Monsters Vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins From Outer Space, Seth Rogen spoke about The Green Hornet, which he is currently shooting and co-wrote with Evan Goldberg (Superbad). Rogen told MovieWeb that it is a relief to finally be working on the oft-troubled movie.
It is [a relief]. An enormous one; constantly. But we still have to make it awesome. So the true relief isn't there yet.
With Stephen Chow dropping out as director and co-star, the release being pushed back five months, and Nicolas Cage also quitting the project, The Green Hornet has had it's share of troubles before it even started production. Estranged Wife: 'Furlong Threatened To Slit His Wrists'

Edward Furlong's estranged wife filed a retraining order against the actor one week after he threatened to commit suicide, according to new reports.
Rachael Kneeland filed for divorced from the Terminator 2: Judgment Day star in July after three years of marriage.
She obtained a restraining order against him earlier this month amid claims the actor had become "unpredictable" and had turned violent during a recent argument. She alleged Furlong beat her "with chains and bats" and accused him of taking cocaine.
Furlong, who was ordered to stay at least 100 yards away from Kneeland, slammed the allegations and insisted he had been "sober for more than five years" after a long battle with drugs.
It has since emerged the restraining order was requested just days after Kneeland called the police in a panic, convinced her husband would follow through with threats to slit his wrists and bleed to death.
In a phone recording of the emergency call, obtained by TMZ.com, Kneeland tells the operator, "My ex-husband has left several messages saying that he plans to slit his wrists. I called him back and he said he's already started.
"He left several messages threatening it (suicide), saying it's my fault. He said he had started and was going to finish the job... He's really angry."
The star's current condition is unknown.
Kneeland, who has a three-year-old son with Furlong, filed a request to have the restraining order removed last week. »

"The Insider" has obtained a 911 call made by the estranged wife of 'Terminator 2: Judgment Day' star Edward Furlong, in which she tells the operator the actor expressed a desire to take his own life. Read on for the 911 audio... In the 911 call that was made on Sept. 23, Rachael Kneeland says: "[Furlong] left me several messages saying he's going to slit his wrist. I called him back and he said he's already started." She later told the 911 dispatcher that Furlong told her he "was going to finish the job," adding, "I'm just warning you, he's like really angry…." The 911 operator then attempted to call Furlong, but there was no answer.

Soon, very soon now, fans will get to see exactly what an Oliver Stone sequel looks like. The original hit theaters in 1987, earning Michael Douglas a Best Actor Oscar for his performance as shark Gordon Gekko. In the original, the morally bankrupt Gekko coaches young newcomer Bud Fox (Charlie Sheen) as he enters the fast-paced world of stock trading.
Gekko finds some redemption in the coming sequel, "Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps," when he links up with another young trader -- Jacob Moore (Shia Labeouf) -- on the eve of a catastrophic financial crisis. It's not so unusual, to turn a one-time villain into a redemptive figure (see also: "Terminator 2: Judgment Day"). He'll even have a daughter in this outing, Winnie Gekko, played by Carey Mulligan.

Furlong's Wife To Dismiss Restraining Order

Terminator 2: Judgment Day star Edward Furlong's estranged wife is seeking to dismiss the restraining order she obtained against the star.
Rachael Kneeland, who filed for divorce from Furlong in July, won the order against the actor after claiming her "unpredictable" ex turned violent and beat her "with chains and bats" during an argument. She also accused him of taking cocaine.
Furlong was ordered to stay 100 yards (91 metres) away from Kneeland pending a hearing on Tuesday, despite the actor vehemently denying the allegations and insisting he has been sober for five years.
Kneeland announced on Monday she is now trying to remove the restraining order and that the former couple is trying to keep their relations amicable.
The pair has a three-year-old son together. »
