First of all, I want to say that I have always been a great admirer of Sidney Poitier. I think -- as few I am sure would disagree -- that he was one of Hollywood's greatest actors and is a true legend. However, this role was not a good cast for him, largely because he bears absolutely no physical resemblance to Thurgood Marshall.
Yes, I know that actors need not be dead ringers for the characters they portray, but given that Poitier and Marshall are virtually opposites in terms of appearance--Poitier is very dark complexioned and Marshall was very light complexioned--it's rather difficult to accept Sidney appearing as the late civil rights lawyer and Supreme Court Justice. Perhaps Billy Dee or even an unknown actor with a more similar resemblance to Marshall would made a better choice?
