Producer Charles Roven Developing The Looking Glass Wars Movie

21 hours ago | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

It's always fun to take an established story and manipulate the so-called "happily ever after" ending. Steven Spielberg making Peter Pan grow up with Hook, or Hansel and Gretel becoming professional witch hunters are just a couple of fine examples. Now it looks like The Dark Knight producer Charles Roven is set to play in the world of Wonderland as this morning on Good Morning America (via ComingSoon) author Frank Beddor announced that he has been working with Roven to adapt his series of novels collectively known as The Looking Glass Wars, which have a much different take on the classic Alice in Wonderland story. In this rather interesting take on that story, it claims that Leiws Caroll's two preceding books (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass) were nothing but lies and that this is the true story. Beddor's version features twists on the original story, such »

The 67-year-old, who has starred in movies such as Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Hook, said that he learned his profession by watching women and trying to copy their expressions. Top Ten Working American Directors

Top Ten Working American Directors

A list like this is tricky to the point of madness. However, I'm going to save you the trouble by saying it right here, right now: Most of the choices on this list are obvious. There's a reason why certain names continually pop up whenever conversation drifts toward great American films. So there. I said it.

Yet, how do you weigh the likes of Francis Ford Coppola, a genius who delivered some of the all-time greatest films, but fizzled out 25 or so years ago, against a filmmaker like Woody Allen who has worked consistently for decades churning out both brilliant gems and disposable time wasters? How do you compare either of these directors against an auteur such as Spike Jonze who has only opened two films so far, but both are masterpieces?

In the end I just went with my gut. I knew there were »

5 Movies That Make Us Hungry

20 September 2009 9:02 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

With the release of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs this weekend, I caught a commercial on Adult Swim the other night that said this film was either the cause of or solution to "a serious case of the munchies." It made me hungry. What's this? A man and woman frollicking inside jello? Oh, sooo much spaghetti! Those gummi bears look f*cking scrumptious! I immediately got up from my couch and made a bowl of ice cream. With Heath bar crumbs. And caramel topping. Mmmm. Then I sat down and wondered, "wait, what just happened?" It got me thinking -- some action movies make you drive a little faster once you leave the theater; some dramas make you re-think your life and donate money to the Red Cross. Which movies make you hungry? I thought long and hard (on an empty stomach) and came up with five films that make me salivate. Honey »

Today's Short: The Pogo Collection

3 September 2009 2:31 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Instead of a single little film, today Jpp is delighted to bring you 4 short pieces from Pogo, an online film editor who creates smooth techno mixes using sound and video clips from films. Now, typically I'm hesitant to show off any of those generic hack edit jobs that your average Mac user pulls together using their favorite song and pieces from the movie they felt should be rearranged so they fit some wildly poor excuse for a beat. But these are different. These are sublime. Take a look.

{youtube}65PiKsNhCsc{/youtube}

You might not consider Hook to be one of Steven Spielberg's finer films, but even then you can't deny the high quality mixing and amazing composition created here. I think it's fair to say Dustin Hoffman has a rap career in his future.

Play it once. Play it again. And again. It's addictive »

Steven Spielberg Takes on ‘Pirates’

28 August 2009 4:00 PM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Sometimes with all the things going on in the world of movies, tv, comics, games and all things geek (See what I did there?) we sometimes miss out on a few bits of news here and there. Case in point is the recent news that Steven Spielberg is sailing away to 17th century Jamaica for a new adventure. USA Today reports that DreamWorks has bought the rights to Michael Crichton’s posthumous novel, Pirate Latitudes, and has hired screenwriter David Koepp to adapt it.

Spielberg is producing, but plans on directing, though nothing has been scheduled until the script is completed. While it’s unfortunate that Crighton can’t be around to work with long time collaborator Spielberg, according to the article, the timelessness of this deal is pure coincidence, according to DreamWorks’ co-chair and CEO Stacey Snider.

“Anything that Michael wrote, Steven would be keenly interested to read. But without Michael knowing it, »

Spielberg Adapting Another Crichton Novel

27 August 2009 12:33 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Steven Spielberg is adapting another of Michael Crichton’s novels, the posthumously published Pirate Latitudes for DreamWorks Studios.  The deal re-teams the creative team of Jurassic Park and The Lost World, including screenwriter David Koepp.  Crichton passed away on November 5, 2008 from cancer.

The manuscript was discovered by his writing assistant and delivered to a publisher after Crichton’s death.  On November 24, 2009, HarperCollins is releasing the novel about a daring plan in 1665 to infiltrate Port Royal, one of the world’s richest and most notorious cities, and raid a Spanish galleon filled with treasure.  More about it on Wikipedia, the source for all things accurate.

The stories won’t be similar to Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy because it will be more grounded in reality and not the fantasy plots starring Johnny Depp.

Spielberg is producing the project, but hasn’t agreed to direct the film.  With his busy schedule, »

Steven Spielberg Navigates Michael Crichton’s Pirate Latitudes

27 August 2009 3:17 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

"...without Michael knowing it, or even me knowing it, it turns out Steven always wanted to direct his own pirate film." A quote from Stacy Snider, co-chair and CEO of Dreamworks, talking about Steven Spielberg's long-held desire to have his own pirate film. Of course, to anyone who has followed Spielberg's career can tell you that he has a thing for pirates -- he produced The Goonies, which had a pirate subplot, and directed Hook, which also had some high-flying kid pirates. Along with pirates, Spielberg has always had a thing for Michael Crichton as well. He adapted Crichton's Jurassic Park into one of the most memorable films of all-time. And now, according to USA Today, he will be once again tapping the work of the late author, with the adaptation of the posthumously released "Pirate Latitudes." Set for release November 24, "Pirate Latitudes" is said to the be the story of "a daring plan to infiltrate »

Would You Watch a New 'Wizard of Oz' Sequel?

24 August 2009 5:32 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

By: Peter Hall

Warner Brothers wants to make a sequel to the 1939 Victor Fleming adaptation of Frank L. Baum's The Wizard of Oz. On the surface that seems all well and good, but the original news source, an article from the UK's Daily Express, shares a few surprising details that make this a contender for an award I just made up: Most Unexpected Film News I've Read in a While.

It's no surprise that the WB would want to send Dakota Fanning over the rainbow, but it is kind of shocking to learn they've no intention of a remake. The fifteen year old Fanning would play a grand daughter of Dorothy who, for an unknown reason, ends up in the land of the Tin Man. But before that gives you visions of Robin Williams heading back to Neverland in Hook, take a gander at this quote from one of the »

'Harry Potter' Wizard, 'True Blood' Fang-Banger And Disney's Favorite Genie In Birthday Bash

20 July 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Just as everyone has an opinion, a favorite meal and a nose — albeit a fake one at times — so too does everyone have a birthday. Even celebrities. Here at Birthday Bash, it’s my mission to salute the fine actors, filmmakers and other Hollywood heroes that are celebrating their special day this week. After all, it’s cheaper than mailing a cake.

This week, Birthday Bashers will catch the train leaving Platform 9 3/4 heading for the Cave of Wonders, battling blood-sucking vampires along the way. Or maybe we're just celebrating some actors who've done that dirty work for us. Either way, let's get to the party!

Robin Williams (July 21): Few actors in Hollywood can juggle the role of gut-busting comedian and tear-jerking dramatist like Robin Williams, as seen by his performances in "Good Morning, Vietnam" and "Mrs. Doubtfire," among others. Seriously, go back and check out the cross-dressing comedy -- »

A Bizarre Moment of Oscar Trivia with Kyra Sedgwick

9 June 2009 9:09 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Congratulations to Kyra Sedgwick who just got her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!

Remember when it looked for a millisecond like she might get an Oscar nod for playing Julia Robert's sassy sister in Something to Talk About back in 1995? Stealing scenes from Julia might seem like a hard thing to do and commendable, too, but it pisses Academy voters right off. One must not pull focus from their Pretty Woman!

Future Julia Roberts co-stars consider yourself forewarned! If you steal a movie from the billion dollar grin, you will get media attention. You will get a Golden Globe nomination. But, come Oscar nomination morning, The Big Snub Awaits You.

Hoffman joins Giamatti

27 May 2009 5:14 AM, PDT | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

Dustin Hoffman, who I still can't believe starred in Hook, will now star in Barney's Version opposite Paul Giamatti. The film is an adaptation of the acclaimed novel by Mordecai Richler, about a retired cop and father of the story's title character -- who has led a reckless life highlighted by three marriages, two children and status as a "person of interest" in the mysterious disappearance of his friend. I love Dustin Hoffman, so this is great. There's something about that guy. He... »
