This week: Stuart Heritage's top five moral dilemmas on film
The moral conundrum at the heart of new Cameron Diaz film The Box isn't whether or not you should see it – because reviewers seem pretty adamant that you absolutely shouldn't – it's this: would you push a button that gave you a million dollars, even if you knew it meant that a stranger would die? Fiendish. You would, obviously, but it's still quite fiendish. Here are five other cinematic moral dilemmas, along with their solutions …
Two boats filled with explosives – should passengers save themselves by blowing up the other vessel? Yes! They live in Gotham City, so it's not like they have anything to live for. Best-case scenario is that they survive and then a fat bloke dressed as a penguin comes along and kills them after a fortnight. They'd be doing the other boat a favour, »

The 1995 arrival on the movie scene of Pixar and their premiere film, Toy Story was a watershed event in the world of animation; at once a blessing and a curse. While the revolutionary animation brought cartoons to a whole new level of realism, it also quickly put several nails in the coffin of the 2-D animation those born before 1990 were raised on. Gone were the days of onscreen watercolor masterpieces like Sleeping Beauty or The Little Mermaid or The Lion King. Now, 15 years later, Disney has decided to give their old-fashioned animation one more try with the New Orleans-set The Princess and The Frog. And they succeed admirably at bringing that old Disney feeling back to the silver screen.
The Princess and The Frog is a play on the old fairytale, "The Frog Prince". This time, our princess is actually a struggling waitress named Tianna (Anika Noni Rose) who dreams not of romance, »

I may seem overtly cynical and critical of today's movies, but it's only because I care about quality when it comes to shelling out a few clams for a film. There was a time, long before my fingers even touched a keyboard, where studios and producers were true showman and labored long and hard to craft memorable pieces of entertainment. There are many artisans today who hold the same ideals, but they are few and far between, often having their works lost in the sea of stories and premises recycled over and over again. We the audience should demand to get our money's worth and more, not shrug our shoulders and give a pass to movies that are barely decent compared to all the other crap. Even a powerhouse studio like Disney lost its way over the years long after the passing of its founder. They hit a great stride »

Vanessa Hudgens' career has just gotten Beastly. We've already known that this project of hers has been lined up for quite some time, but the trailer's just been released. It only lasts a few seconds though, with hardly a glimpse of the High School Musical star. However, that's all it takes for Hudgens' fans to get crazy.
Beastly will be hitting theaters eight months from now, but it's never too late to advertise. The teaser trailer features a voiceover, a couple scenes, and a sly smile from the 20-year-old actress. It may be pegged as a remake of Beauty and the Beast, but with the effects and the modern take on it, it looks way far from the original.

It's another big holiday weekend with plenty of new releases to consider following your Thanksgiving feast this Thursday (and following your subsequent leftovers feasts through Sunday). In the same way that many Americans prefer alternatives to the traditional turkey and stuffing dinner on the day of gratitude, many moviegoers want something other than a studio tentpole release the day after Thanksgiving. Really, why would you want a popcorn movie when you're still full from the night before?
There are a couple of limited release options this week, including an important studio film getting a surprisingly soft opening, to appease such a film diet. Check these films out if you want something different as or additional to your main course this weekend:

It’s been five years since Disney released their last 2D animated feature, Home on the Range and here at Boxwish, we’ve really missed the imaginative art form and so are getting steadily excited by its return with The Princess and the Frog (December in the Us, February 2010 in the UK). And like many of the Disney classics from yonder year, it looks set to boast a soundtrack rich with musical classics. Think Elton John and Tim Rice’s Oscar-winning triumphs for The Lion King, the infectious catchiness of the tunes from The Jungle Book or some of the more romantic numbers from Cinderella or Beauty and the Beast. Yup, the House of Mouse has history when it comes to toe-tapping musical numbers and looks to add to its illustrious past with this latest addition courtesy of Disney•Pixar stalwart, Randy Newman. »

We’re going to need a new word for a trailer that’s shorter than a teaser. The first teensy-tiny-teaser for Beastly, a modern-day spin on the classic tale of Beauty and the Beast has come online and it’s 23 seconds long. It’s actually 17 seconds because the MPAA green-band is on screen for six seconds. The trailer informs us that the young protagonist (Alex Pettyfer) is our “ugliness turn inside out,” after goth girl Kendra (Mary-Kate Olson) puts a curse on him. But Vanessa Hudgens sees the beauty inside because she’s hot and he’s hot too but he’s just under a curse so it’s not his fault. They find a connection but without singing and dancing house hold items, why bother? However, Neil Patrick and Peter Krause also star so that’s something.

No doubt hoping for the kind of blind faith that Twilight fans show at the box office, CBS Films has provided the trailer for its new Beauty and the Beast redux of sorts, Beastly.
Synopsis
Kyle Kingson (Alex Pettyfer) has it all – looks, intelligence, wealth, and opportunity – and a wicked cruel streak. Prone to mocking and humiliating “aggressively unattractive” classmates, he zeroes in on Goth classmate Kendra (Mary-Kate Olsen), inviting her to the school’s extravagant environmental bash. Kendra accepts, and, true to form, Kyle blows her off in a particularly savage fashion. She retaliates by casting a spell that physically transforms him into everything he despises. Enraged by his horrible and unrecognizable appearance, he confronts Kendra and learns that the only solution to the curse is to find someone that will love him as he is – a task he considers impossible.

The following is a 17 second teaser trailer for Beastly, which appears to be some silly little modern day "Beauty and the Beast" tale starring Alex Pettyfer as a egomaniac who, after blowing off a young lady named Kendra, finds that same young lady casting a spell that physically transforms him into everything he despises. He then learns that the only solution to the curse is to find someone that will love him as he is.
The film is expected to hit theaters on July 30, 2010 and also stars Vanessa Hudgens, whom I can only assume will be the girl he ultimately convinces to love him. Woopty-doo.

Here's the new Twilight-esque teaser trailer for Beastly, a modern-day retelling of Beauty and the Beast based on the novel by Alex Finn. What's going on here? I know it's only two seconds long, but I demand more beastliness and maybe a .05-second glimpse of Neil Patrick Harris. When I thumbed through this book a few weeks ago, I imagined Kyle to be much hairier. Alex Pettyfer is giving off more of a (Disney pretty-boy) Gaston vibe than the Beast here. If so, this lad should consider eating four dozen eggs every morning to help him get large. Perhaps we »

Those of you who are looking forward to Beastly, the modern telling of Beauty and the Beast starring Vanessa Hudgens and Alex Pettyfer, get excited-- but not too excited. We have the first teaser for the film, but it's a teaser in the most literal definition of the word, barely 30 seconds long and containing just a few shots from the film. You get a brief look at the transformation that Pettyfer's spoiled teen character undergoes, but given that images of that transformation have already been online, it's not much of a reveal. Still, the dark tone of the trailer proves even further that the movie is aiming to be something more than just a fluffy Vanessa Hudgens vehicle, so I guess that's something. Check out the trailer below and look for more coming soon. Beastly comes out July 30 of next year. <!-- Lightbox Embed Code ... »

The impending existence of the film Beastly, a modern and teen-centric version of Beauty and the Beast, had escaped me until now. But with the power of the teen dollar once again having been reasserted over the weekend, it's time to get the promotions cranking for films that might siphon off a bit of that cashflow. And so here's a brief teaser for Beastly. Be afraid. Be very afraid. The teaser is available at the film's official site. It doesn't give much away, but this take on the story, based on the novel by Alex Finn, follows a young man (Alex Pettyfer), rich, entitled and egocentric. He's cursed by Kendra, a gothy girl at his prep school (Mary-Kate Olsen, appropriately), to transform into some sort of beast. But Vanessa Hudgens sees the real soul inside. Neil Patrick Harris and Peter Krause are onboard as well. Daniel Barnz writes and directs. »

In an obvious attempt to nad the attention of the Twilight (and New Moon) audience, this afternoon CBS Films released the first trailer for Daniel Barnz's "Beauty and the Beast" tale, Beastly, which stars Vanessa Hudgens, Alex Pettyfer, Mary-Kate Olsen, Neil Patrick Harris and Peter Krause. In theaters July 30, when a spell is cast on a handsome egocentric young man (Pettyfer) that physically transforms him into everything he despises, he has one year to find a young woman (Hudgens) who will love him despite his hideous form or the spell will last forever. What do you guys think of the quick tease? »

"Spike" starts, as horror films often do, with a car crash along a rural road at night. But this particular car crash is no accident. Two couples traveling to an unnamed destination are halted by what looks like a steam punk accessory. No one is seriously injured in the accident, but after the lone dude goes to check out the tire damage, an unseen assailant attacks him. The gothic spikes he found in the tire are now sticking out of his throat and he's bleeding out fast. The three remaining girls go into panic mode and try to figure out how to save their friend and just what the hell is going on.
The situation escalates quickly. Naturally, there is no cell phone reception and the Evil Dead cam is stalking them. »

Following the three new posters we’ve had recently (here and here) for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, Disney have release the full image in the form of a high resolution banner! The image is a combination of the three aforementioned posters, and shows Wonderland in all it’s -er- wonderful glory!
Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice) attempts to work his gothic magic over one of the best loved stories of all time… Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice In Wonderland’ and ‘Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There’, which first told the story of a young girl, who after following a rabbit down a hole, is transported to a strange world. Whilst the disney version of the tale relied on sweetness and light to delight the audience, Burton fans can be sure to look out for the same cartoon traits as earlier masterpiece ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’.
