A cartoon classic that's not for small children, 8 July 2004
Author: erwan_ticheler from Amsterdam, Holland
What makes "Ren and Stimpy" so brilliant?
Well the humor is great, the stories are surprising, the characters are grotesque and the dialogue is highly inventive.
Yet this cartoon isn't for small children since a lot of the humor is very difficult to understand and sometimes even political. Therefore I would recommend it to people aged from 12 or so.Then it is a true blast!
Besides Ren and Stimpy other brilliant characters are Muddy Mudskipper,The Powdered Toast Man,Haggis MacHaggis,Mr. "No Sir,I don't like it" Horse,Wilbur J. Cobb and of course the legendary Lummox.
My favorite cartoons are "The Lair of the Lummox","Black Hole","Ren's Toothache","Sven Hoek","Big Baby Scam","Stimpy's Fan Club","PreHistoric Stimpy","Dinner Party" and "Reverend Jack Cheese". Besides those cartoons there are several brilliant short commercials like "Log" and "Chicken in a drawer".
And last but not least there is the great use of classical music in the series. The makers often use music from my favorite composer Tchaikovski, especially the "Nutcracker".
A big thank you to John K. for his work! 10/10

Brilliant but vulgar, 24 March 2005
Author: ctomvelu from usa
Now that the first two seasons are out on a 3-disc set, I was able to reacquaint myself with one of the best cartoon shows to ever grace TV. Sheer genius, mad genius at that, as a neurotic dog with Peter Lorre's voice and a moronic cat sounding remarkably like Stooge Larry Fine roam the universe in search of the perfect cat litter and large pectoral muscles. Watching three discs of this craziness, I am struck by its incredibly gay sensibility, something I had not noticed as readily when it was on the air. The episodes are full of men's often naked asses, ongoing threats of rape and sodomy, over-sized and/or bizarrely costumed men in tiny and sometimes bulging underwear, tutus and kilts, a dog and cat constantly in bed together, references to sword swallowing, etc. John K. said in 1994 the duo was gay, so no real surprise there. Plus we have endless vomiting, profuse displays of verboten bodily fluids long before SCARY MOVIE, SOMETHING ABOUT MARY and American PIE, endless screaming, eviscerations, self-immolations, disembowelings, head crushings, the consumption of lawn cigars and countless other no-nos, beheadings, endless bleeding, rotting teeth, closeups of various diseased body parts and sections, the touching of terrible things, and so on. Some of this stuff is laugh-out-loud funny and the rest of it is cringe-inducing, especially viewed in large doses. Obviously, John K. was working out some serious internal demons. He clearly must have had a "funny" uncle or other male relatives. The animation and background art are worthy of a theatrical cartoon. The sound effects and music and voices are all superb. Even in a crapola episode -- and there are a few -- the music is superb. The show pretty much went to hell after JK left. A typical great episode: Ren's encounter with the tooth nerve fairy. Or Stimpy's invention of the happy helmet. A horrible episode: Stimpy's Stinky Christmas. See for yourself. The set is budget-priced (under $30) and readily available at Target.

Crude, funny, loud, weird: in other words, the best cartoon ever to appear on Nickelodeon!, 23 May 2003
Author: strangerzero from united states
"The Ren and Stimpy Show" is arguably the crudest, funniest show ever on Nickelodeon! The series were so great that ever since it's been cancelled, I've been waiting for a DVD release with episodes and other goodies. I haven't seen an episode in years, though I hope they bring it back somehow. So if you happen to stumble across an episode of Ren and Stimpy, then sit back and prepare to laugh your arse off! I give this, on a scale of 1 to 10, a 20!

Gross-out comedy at its finest., 8 August 2004
Author: Jojomartin from USA
"Ren & Stimpy" is by far one of THE grossest television shows ever, but unlike most shows that try to be gross, this show is pretty damn hilarious. This great show lasted for only five seasons; however, Nickelodeon fired the show's creator, John K., thus seasons 3-5 pretty much sucked when compared to seasons 1 & 2. Despite Nickelodeon showing this series, it really wasn't for kids anyway, especially in this crappy PC environment that plagues today's television. My recommendation is to check out seasons 1 & 2 of this brilliant show. Fortunately, there will be a DVD set that contains seasons 1 & 2 that will be UNCUT, which means that the scenes butchered from Nickelodeon are now restored in all of its glory. I personally put "Ren & Stimpy" up against "Rocky & Bulwinkle", and "Looney Tunes" as one of the great classics. Although it only lasted two seasons,(I am overlooking season's 3-5, since they were done by a different company and were crappier) this classic show will live in our memories and on DVD October 12th.

Really funny., 14 October 2005
Author: (macabre-6) from Norway
I have seen almost every episode in this highly underrated series that originally aired on NICKELODEON, many of the episodes contained adult material and situations, such as when Ren gets his new adult magazine "CORN" he says:"i can't wait to try it out" Not so hard to understand what he is referring to, right? When John Kricfalusi got fired Bob Camp stepped up and delivered(according to me)some episodes that was even sicker than Kricfalusis. The major difference between Camp and Kricfalusi are their own personal humor, while Kricfalusi enjoyed playing around with childish fart jokes and homosexual references , Camp provided some really disturbing episodes that were just plain hilarious, such as MAD DOG HOEK and I WAS A TEENAGE STIMPY. This may be a little unusual but i think that Camp has the upper hand and i find his episodes much better not to forget funnier.

Oh my belov-ed ice cream bar! How I love to lick your creamy center!, 26 October 2004

Very sick, Very ahead of its time! The background is very camp, and reminds you of the old fifties cartoons. The same style of sets and I like when they use people but never show there faces. however this similarity stops there.
Most of the stories are clever and funny with a bit of sick humor and or gross context thrown in. The gags are mostly funny because there taken to their extreme. Like the old WB Coyote falling from the highest cliff over and over and over. Or they play out what we all would like to be doing in real life. They can even poke fun at themselves and do so often. I love them and recommend them to anyone with a good sense of humor, but they are not what I would show my kids.

"Keep your stinkiness to yourself.", 28 January 2008
Author: haildevilman from Tokyo, Japan
Johnny K. drop kicked animation into the next phase when he created this masterpiece.
Non-stop non sequitors were all over the place. I couldn't stop laughing. And the situations seemed to be an ongoing contest of how unrealistic can we be. The deadpan deliveries added to the fun.
Kirsch lost the rights to this at one point and the new owners RUINED it. It became an abuse/gross-fest. So make sure you see the Spumco versions only.
The DVD has it all un-cut now. And it's still funnier than anything on today. Seth MacFarlane had to have been a fan.
This and the great "Liquid Television" deserve to be kept alive.

Another Nickelodeon Cartoon Classic!, 23 May 2004
Author: SonicStuart from Kansas City, MO
The Ren and Stimpy Show is a funny and can sometimes be a little gross but I still like it kind of cartoon! The Ren and Stimpy Show is about an intense hyperactive chihuahua and a empty-brained cat who share all those weird bizarre and often repulsive adventures. This show is one of my favorite Nickelodeon shows that was also pretty popular and it was also one of the first three Nickelodeon cartoons that started the whole Nicktoons era. The Ren and Stimpy Show was one of the first three nicktoon shows along with Doug and Rugrats. I remember that this show used to be apart of Nickelodeon's SNICK Saturdays until those stupid Rugrats took it's place but luckily I was glad when SpongeBob Squarepants kicked Rugrats out of the SNICK line-up and replace their time slot! Then I remember when this show came back for a little while in early 2000 and showed reruns again until Nickelodeon canceled it again! Another thing I remember about this show was when they started making TV audience ratings, most of the Nickelodeon cartoons were rated TV-Y and this one was the only Nickelodeon cartoon to be rated TV-Y7.
User Rating: 6/10
BOTTOM LINE: ANOTHER NICKELODEON CARTOON CLASSIC OF THE 1990's!

One of the best cartoons to grace TV., 12 July 2007
Author: Jonathan Tomajko from United States
OH JOY!! Ren & Stimpy is indeed one of the greatest cartoons ever in the world. The show's humor was definitely the best, and the content of the episodes are classic. From selling rubber nipples to the great outdoors, "The Ren & Stimpy Show" is without a doubt one of the best cartoons to grace my TV set. If you have never seen this show make sure you do! For whenever you watch this show you will know this show is a true classic. Just watching the beginning theme song you know you are in for a show with goofy and somewhat gross humor that never wears out. I could watch an episode 10 times and still laugh at it because it's humor is timeless. You will not know true American Animation until you watch "The Ren & Stimpy Show".
It deserves a 20 out of 10 but for now I'll give it a 10 out of 10

Odd but entertaining art., 8 November 2008
Author: Darwinskid from United States
*** This comment may contain spoilers ***
Ren & Stimpy was a favorite of both myself and my sister when we were children. Our mother absolutely hated it and wished they'd chancel the dang thing, but she let us view it anyway.
The show followed the adventures of a crazy chihuahua and his fat, uneducated friend Stimpy. Sometimes there would be supporting characters that got their own story arcs, like Powdered Toast Man and there was advertisement for the most strangest and simplest things.
What made Ren & Stimpy a great cartoon was it's unique artistic style and creative dialogue that made many double meanings and ultimately had an inventive way of looking at society.
But as an old fan I must admit that the show isn't for everybody, sometimes the jokes did go to far and the intensity was a little extreme, some even were a bit disturbing if you were a kid. For example, when I was a kid, though I loved the show, there was a particular episode where Stimpy basically created two Ren's representing two of Ren's emotions-his evil side and his dull side. His evil side is insane and at one point ties up Stimpy and his dull side and activates Stimpy's machine. There's a lot of intense dialogue here and in the end Ren makes a female version of himself( I think) and they get married, as they drive off Stimpy and Ren's dull side are left stuck to the wall and dragged across town. Anothber would be where their in space and Ren goes suffers some some sort of space dementia and goes wild over an ice cream bar, which is actually a bar of soap.
Then again it is by John K. and whether you love or hate him it is his style.
Ren & Stimpy is worth the price.
