If you ever want a sitcom that doesn't try too hard, has simple, funny, appealing characters and never elevates into something that it's not, Nurses is the show for you. It was a good, solid sitcom and although it could push the cheesiness barrier to the limit, it was still great fun.The first season was pretty average, with a sweet, cheesy theme tune and some interesting storylines. However, that was obviously not good enough, so season 2 was totally revamped, with the great Florence Stanley (as the hilarious Amanda Riskin) gone as well as Greg (Jeff Altman) and we now had the infuriating Jack Trenton (played by the equally awful David Rasche) and the weird Luke (Markus Flanagan). Season 2 was good, but it had too many storylines centered around Jack. I advise anyone to check out the episode with John Ratzenberger (Cliff from the glorious Cheers) from Season 2, one of the best. But Season 2 was still unsatisfactory to some, so they extended it to a third. This time we now had a problem, as Loni Anderson (God Help Us) joined the cast. Nurses had changed from a nice, middle-of-the-road show to a nasty, unfunny mess. The terrible Loni didn't help. So off the show went, cancelled in America in 1994 and now doing the rounds in repeat runs on cable TV in England.Nurses had a fantastic female leading cast. Stephanie Hodge was amazing as the down-trodden Sandy Miller, with the sexiest voice since Kathleen Turner. Arnetia walker added the right amount of sass to Annie Roland, making her hilarious. Ada Maris was equally good as Gina Cuevas, with her dry delivery and great lines. But Mary Jo Keenen was just terrific, brilliant as the dense but lovable Julie Milbury. The rest of the cast (Kip Gilman, Carlos LaCamara, etc.) had funny moments but this really was the show for the girls. If you're ever up at night watching TV and you come across Nurses (probably around 2 or 3 am) don't immediately turn over. watch it and you just might be surprised.
