What attracts me so much to this TV show is the way it is like my own family, and also like some of my friends families (Bill is my mother all over!!!). On the surface, the Porters are a normal family, even the series' title 2 Point 4 Children, the average family size, represents their supposed normality(as well as the fact that the head of the household is still a bit of a child himself, he's the 0.4). Not only is the family aimed to represent the average family, the show also shows the times, and the current situations in England.
From the earliest episodes, it has centred not on the husband, Ben, but on his wife, Bill, (no, not the flowerpot men). But as the show grows on the plots begin to expand to the whole family. (With a brand new Jenny after series 3, thank the Lord, the original looked fresh from 'The Munsters'). As the show gained more series they became more and more funnier, but didn't become stupid, the way 'My Family' is becoming.
This show is great. Period. It's humane, it mixes tiny amounts of drama, it shows a family, and not a family of half-wits (!), if you think you're own life is reasonably routine, watch this and i can guarantee you'll see the funny side of your own life, and the Poters life as well. Wit and sophistication is the key ingredients in this show.
