Year in Review Part 2: Burn the Negatives!

The title of this post is indefensible, exclamatory (!) and puerile. But these movies piss me off and if they can be super obnoxious, so can I. Now, in truth, I probably never see the absolute "worst" of the movies that play in theaters since I can pick and choose my own film menu. My New Year's Resolution is to be more constructive when I criticize (I'm not giving up criticism. That's mother's milk). I'd also like to be more positive in 2010.
Thus, I retract the titular command: No negatives of the following movies and performances should be incinerated ... instead let them live on as cautionary tales to actors and filmmakers. People are watching. Try harder.
Worst Supporting Actor
I've already expressed my concerned about the "too much!" of Stanley Tucci's continually nominated performance in The Lovely Bones. I don't know what the hell Richard Gere was doing in Amelia,

The 1946 feel-good family movie – which stars James Stewart as a man who commits suicide on Christmas Eve and meets his guardian angel who shows him what life would have been like if he'd never existed – won 17 per cent of the vote in a poll of over 3,000 people.
Despite being nominated for five Oscars, 'It's A Wonderful Life' didn't win any, but the film has since been recognised by the American Film Institute as one of the 100 best American films ever made.
Coming a close second with 16 per cent of the vote was 'Home Alone', the movie which catapulted Macaulay Culkin to stardom when he played eight-year-old Kevin, who is accidentally left behind when his family headed to France for Christmas.
Kathryn Jacob, chief executive of Pearl and Dean, who commissioned the poll, said: “Christmas is renowned as a time when families come together and enjoy watching films- old and new.

12 Action Movies Set During Christmas Season

Christmas is supposed to be a time of giving, peace and good will towards men. But in Hollywood, its also a time for death, destruction and nearly every form of mayhem. Throughout the 80's 90's and (soon to be history) 00's more and more action films seem to take place during “the most wonderful time of the year”. Whether it be a heist, monster invasion or assault by pirates, so much onscreen action occurs on this jolly day that it's a miracle ole Saint Nick isn't killed in the crossfire. Here are just a few action films where Christmas is actually the last thing on the minds of characters fighting for their lives.Batman Returns (1992) Set during the Christmas season where a tree lighting ceremony in Gotham City serves as a battleground for the struggle between Batman (Michael Keaton), The Penguin (Danny DeVito) and Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer). The Movie Home Alone As Told By Twitter

What would Home Alone be like if every character had a Twitter account? Now you can stop wondering and find out because The Home Alone Twitter project (via Slash Film) takes you through the entire film in real time through 23 Twitter accounts. Just a few minutes ago, Kate McCallister (@KateMcCal) was tweeting back and forth with Gus Polinski (@Gus_Polinski) trying to arrange a ride home to Chicago. Now, the Wet Bandits, Harry and Marv (@TallnCurly and @Harry_Lyme), are plotting their invasion into Kevin.s (@KevinMcCal) house.
When you think about it, there.s really no point to the whole thing, but if you.ve got some time on your hands, it.s pretty amusing to see the movie play out on Twitter. Some of the tweets even have pictures and videos.
You can follow all 21 characters, the Illinois Police Depart and Little Nero.s Pizza or just check

Now this is pretty unique idea. One of my all-time favorite Christmas movies is, without a doubt, Home Alone, the 1990 Macaulay Culkin classic. I've seen it enough times to know exactly what happens when and how it all plays out, but it's still a great movie. Apparently someone else wanted to take their knowledge and love of Home Alone to the next level as they've started up the "Home Alone Project" on Twitter. They've created fake Twitter accounts for some 19 characters in the movie, from Kevin McCallister to his big brother Buzz to Old Man Marley, and are tweeting things just like if everything was actually happening in real life.
Here's a little photo for reference to give you an idea of how it's playing out (click it to see the stream):
This is such a genius idea! Special thanks to SlashFilm for discovering it. The complete stream for

Are you a fan of the movie Home Alone? /Film reader Tom H sent along word that you can now follow the McCallister family as they fly off to Paris and discover they left their son Kevin at home, alone.
The Home Alone Twitter project follows the characters in real time in an alternative dimension where all of the characters have access to Twitter accounts in the 21st century. People who are interested can follow 22 different characters or just watch the the twitter-list to see how they interact, chat to each other and tweet their thoughts and feelings. You might also want to check out some of the individual twitter accounts, which are all pretty elaborately set-up. For example, check out the page for Buzz McCallister.
Kevin McCallister just sent out a twitpic showing a photo of van in the driveway of his neighbors house, but he "thought the Murphys

Thank goodness that despite all the suckage 2009 has wrought, one thing remains dependable in this godforsaken world: Cable marathons on Christmas. Yes, the holidays once again bring us the greatest gift of all, hit after hit of addictive movies to watch instead of actually sharing the spirit of the season with other human beings.
The beauty of the movie marathon is that you don't even have to look at a schedule to know when you have to turn on the TV to catch the likes of A Christmas Story and Night at the Museum -- because they'll be playing on

Like many families, you're probably considering heading out to an AMC Theatre on Christmas day (I know I'll be going to see "Avatar" again), but even if you don't leave the house -- there's lots of movie action happening on the small screen.
Variety has an article up profiling some of the Christmas Day marathon trends that different cable networks are embracing this year. For 13 years, Ted Turner's networks (first TNT, now TBS) have offered 24 hours of the movie "A Christmas Story," back to back. I'm an Atlanta native and even before the 24-hour marathon became a tradition, TNT and TBS both aired the 1983 classic at least once during the holiday season. Now, having the movie on in the background is an expected part of my family's Christmas tradition. While eating or talking (and generally before heading off to the movie theater), the story of Ralphie and his Red Ryder Bb Gun.

Blu-ray Review: Home Alone 2 Lost in New York

Not many sequels can get away with (critically, at least) almost step-by-step rehashing the entire plot of the original film and simply transposing it to a new setting. Home Alone 2: Lost in New York doesn’t really get away with it either, but as a kid, the film’s target audience, I never seemed to mind when the holiday flick was released in 1992. It was more of a smartass kid kicking the crap out of two clown burglars who can take as many shots as Wile E. Coyote, this time in the Big Apple.
Home Alone 2’s formula is so close one must wonder if they simply used the same script. The McCallister’s Chicago household is bustling again, as the holiday season is upon them, and against all common sense following the previous year’s exploits, they are planning another holiday trip for the entire family. Missed Christmas movies: Disney’s ‘One Magic Christmas’

Like most of the planet (or at least the 12 people I’ve talked to), I count National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation as one of the best (and certainly funniest) Christmas movies in cinema history. I also greatly enjoy Home Alone, Elf, A Charlie Brown Christmas, The Santa Clause and Noel (yes, Noel. I know, Paul Walker lacks a little, um, well, acting talent, but it’s still a good movie). And right up there with my favorite December 25th-themed flicks is Disney’s One Magic Christmas starring Harry Dean Stanton and Mary Steenburgen and released in 1985. Sadly I feel this movie has been left in the dust in popularity, but it is not a film to forget. It’s family-friendly (for kids 10 and up) and possesses depth and heart-felt emotion.
The story revolves around a woman named Ginny Grainger (Steenburgen) who seems to lack all joy in life. Her love for her husband,

In a sad twist on a perennial holiday favorite, a moviegoing mother has been sentenced to prison after leaving her children home alone. It's a tragic version of what John Hughes wrote and Chris Columbus directed, Home Alone with no Macaulay Culkin and no happy ending in sight.
As reported by Wlwt in Cincinnati, Ohio, police officers discovered the woman's three children, ranging in age from 4 years down to just 8 months, alone in an apartment with a broken front door lock -- and no food -- in January. The woman arrived home from seeing a movie, claiming that her brother was supposed to be watching the children. She was sentenced to probation in April after pleading guilty to two counts of child endangerment, but violated her parole and as a result was sentenced to two years in prison on Thursday. Wlwt says that the woman was previously convicted of child

When I began dreaming about Condoleezza Rice, four years ago, I had no idea she was a torturer. Forbes named her 2005's Most Powerful Woman in the World, and that inspired me to make a movie about her. Courting Condi would be a 'musical-docu-comedy' about one man's attempt to win the heart of a Great American Woman. I found a man who was in love with her: Devin Ratray, a musician and actor who found fame as Buzz in Home Alone. I began building a production team that would eventually encompass 210 film professionals. Discovery agreed to finance the movie.
One week before shooting, trouble began. Our attorney called to deliver some devastating news: Discovery was pulling out. Karl Rove had taken the CEO out to lunch and warned him that unauthorized films about the administration's beloved 'steel magnolia' could
