Good story, but embarrassingly sappy., 1 May 2005
4/10
Author: (spud-48) from Idaho, USA

I like the basic story, but the implementation leaves me unsatisfied.

I'm a 63 year-old male and find it too embarrassingly sappy even though I like a lot of tear-jerkers and chick-flicks. I cringe and wince constantly through this show.

The kids are too precocious and talky. They bug the poor guy, not giving him any privacy.

Robert Mitchum does a good job with what he's given.

The ending is OK, but not fully believable or engaging. It brought no tears to my eyes.

"A Family for Joe" is similar to the show "Uncle Ben" (1978), but Uncle Ben is very well done and brings tears to my eyes every time. Uncle Ben is a 27 minute true story of an alcoholic who seeks custody of nephews and a niece orphaned by an accident. I have it on a VHS tape called "The Worth of Souls" with 4 other stories. I rate Uncle Ben an 8/10, but A Family for Joe only a 4/10.
