If I were a little more scholarly I could probably pinpoint the exact moment when the Italian Giallo movement turned away from its arthouse leanings and became a trashy, exploitive genre. Of course, you could pretty much clock the evolution of any genre that has become popular in Italy and wind up with the same results as the country has a long history of milking every good thing that comes along and capitalizing on the draw of sex and violence until the box office revenue streams run dry. It happened with Spaghetti Westerns, the post-Conan barbarian craze, the zombie genre etc. etc. etc.. I'm pretty sure a combination of Lucio Fulci and the advent of cheap digital photography equipment had something to do with the phenomenon in every case,

George Romero's... Island Of The Dead?

3 October 2008 7:44 AM, PDT | From iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news

A few days back, rumor had it that George A. Romero had started shooting a new zombie movie that was not a sequel to this year's Diary Of The Dead. Now, Variety confirms this news with a plot synopsis to the as-yet-to-be-titled new Romero movie that's tentatively going by the name Island Of The Dead. (Hey, I dig that.)

According to Variety's article, the "Plot involves inhabitants of an isolated island off the North American coast who find their relatives rising from the dead to eat their kin. The leaders of the island feud over whether or not to kill their reanimated relatives or preserve them in hopes of finding a cure. The cast includes Alan Van Sprang, Kenneth Welsh (Twin Peaks), Kathleen Munroe, Devon Bostick (Saw IV), Richard Fitzpatrick, Stefano Colacitti and Athena Karkanis (Saw IV)."

Meanwhile, Aint It Cool has a few "spy" photos from the production which you can check out Here!

Gossip Girl

1 September 2008 6:47 PM, PDT | From avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news

(Note: Alas, this isn’t the return of the Gossip Girl blog, but a check-in on the beginning of Season Two. Much as I enjoyed writing the Gg recaps pre-strike and tried to lobby our readers into watching along with me, response was too tepid to justify the weekly labor. Unless there’s a sudden surge of interest—in which case, we’ll see if something can be worked out—I’ll just weigh in now and perhaps at the end of the season. Xxoo) Boy, I’m really thirsty, aren’t you? Except lately, water really hasn’t done it for me. Sure, it’s essential for sustaining life, but based on tonight’s episode of Gossip Girl, it’s clear that plain old H2O has become a little passé. If you want to hobnob with the Hamptons elite—and perhaps bag that well-preserved minx from Twin Peaks

Taking a Closer Look at 'My Own Worst Enemy'

22 August 2008 11:00 PM, PDT | From buddytv.com | See recent BuddyTV news

A few days ago on one of our Fall 2008 Previews, we gave you a peek into NBC’s newest sci-fi suspense offering, My Own Worst Enemy, which stars Christian Slater in a plot that delves into the life of two very different men.  The twist?  The two men own one body.  Christian Slater plays Henry Spivey, a typical family man living a comfortable life in the suburbs.  Unbeknownst to Henry, he has a dual personality, which forces him to share his body with alter ego Edward Albright, a skilled government agent who can speak several languages and literally kick a--!  Complications arise, though, when their lives get tangled up in each other.

My Own Worst Enemy, which hits television screens come October 13 at 10pm, is created by Jason Smilovi, who brought us the equally astonishing Kidnapped.  Joining Smilovi as executive producer and director is David Semel, who previously worked on

Piper Laurie to Attend Twin Peaks Festival!

16 July 2008 6:48 PM, PDT | From DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news

If you've been thinking about attending the 2008 Twin Peaks Festival, a bit of news that crossed our desk might help make that decision easier. Piper Laurie will be joining the festivities this year for the first time!

Piper is beloved by Twin Peaks fans for her marvelously devious portrayal of Catherine Martell, archnemesis of Josie Packard and double-crosser of Ben Horne. Of course she's also remembered for her outlandish performance in Carrie as poor Sissy Spacek's tormenting and fanatical mother.

Returning to the Fest for her eighth visit is Kimmy Robertson, aka Lucy Moran, the quirky receptionist in the Twin Peaks Sheriff's Office. Previously confirmed guests include James Marshall (James Hurley) and Charlotte Stewart (Betty Briggs).

The cutoff for advance tickets has passed, but you can still purchase them in person at the Festival sign-in. Just beware they do not accept credit cards or personal checks for in-person purchases.

Random Rules: Sloane Crosley

9 July 2008 9:01 PM, PDT | From avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news

The shuffler: Book-publicist-turned-essayist Sloane Crosley, author of I Was Told There'd Be Cake, a collection of humorous pieces written in a droll, playfully sour voice that evokes the likes of David Sedaris, Sarah Vowell, and David Rakoff. Her stories cover a range of subject matter from locking herself out of her Manhattan apartment to withstanding a stint as a bridesmaid. Bree Sharp, "David Duchovny" Sloane Crosley: This is an insane song that came out right around when The X-Files was really popular. I know this sounds like a weird thing to say if you're under the age of 80, but she's got a hell of a set of pipes. She's very extreme about her obsession with David Duchovny: "David Duchovny, why won't you love me? I'm going to kill Scully." I actually wasn't a X-Files fan, but I was a big Twin Peaks fan, so...

The Saturn Awards: And The Winner Is…

27 June 2008 6:40 AM, PDT | From ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news

Oh, I can’t stand the suspense! This week, the 34th annual Saturn Awards handed out their usual fare of achievement recognizing statues.

In the event you aren’t aware of what they are, the Saturn Awards are the honors handed out by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films. The Academy has been delivering their awards for over thirty years and they look to recognize cinematic achievement.

It’s a recognized validation of the genre we so fervently appreciate.

Some of the more noteworthy recipients of the awards:

Walt Disney Studios picked up three awards, ABC’s Lost snagged four awards, and 300 picked up 2 awards.

More specifically, some of the categories that caught my eye were:

Best Science Fiction Film: Cloverfield

Best Action/Adventure/Thriller Film: 300

Best Actor: Will Smith (I Am Legend)

Best Special Effects: Scott Farrar, Scott Benza, Russell Earl, John Frazier (Transformers)

Best Network Television

Classic Moments: Waldo is shot ('Twin Peaks')

14 June 2008 11:00 PM, PDT | From Digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news

Relive the inspired moment that occurred midway through the sixth episode of Twin Peaks' majestic first season, as a simple bird becomes a key witness to a murder. You'll never look at donuts in the same way again. The Context Special Agent Dale Cooper is investigating the murder of drug-addicted beauty queen Laura Palmer in the remote town of Twin Peaks. He discovers that her body has several peck marks on the shoulder that came from a bird. Cooper finds the creature in a remote cabin that belongs to suspect Jacques Renault and is stunned to discover that Waldo the myna bird has strong mimicry skills of the human voice. However, it needs to be nursed back to health with plenty of fresh fruit. It's taking time though, so Cooper leaves the caged Waldo in a police station room with a voice-activated dictaphone alongside it. The bird, a witness to Laura's murder,

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me

7 May 2008 11:30 AM, PDT | From avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news

Time for one last greeting from Twin Peaks. Sorry it’s taken so long to get around to this. I never intended the Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me to be the TV Club’s Chinese Democracy but I kept getting busy with other projects and then there was a vacation in there somewhere, as distant as that already seems. Something else held me up, too. I wasn’t exactly looking forward to revisiting Fwwm, a film that disappointed me when I first saw it in 1992 and didn’t improve for me upon watching it on DVD a couple of years ago. But maybe I was wrong. I didn’t care for Lynch’s Lost Highway the first time through, but when I watched it again this year for a DVD review it looked like a near-masterpiece to me. So I’d love to report that I came back from Fwwm with a.
