Trivia:
The name "Ron Anderson" is remarkably similar to the name of the actor who plays him, Rowan Atkinson. One of the other contenders for the award that Anderson won was Griff Rhys Jones, the "Jones" half of the comedy duo "Alas Smith & Jones" (1984). Mel Smith (the Smith half) directed the film. Smith, Jones and Atkinson starred together in the television series "Not the Nine O'Clock News" (1979). Also, Anderson refers to his side-kick (Jeff Goldblum) on stage as "Perkins". When performing live, Atkinson frequently uses Angus Deayton as his sidekick who is always called "Perkins". Deayton makes a small appearance in the film as an actor looking at several excellent roles while Dexter gets offered a single role as a tall American. more

Great fun, 21 August 2000
Author: Dodger-9 from York

Take an obligatory American - Jeff Goldblum - a gorgeous nurse (Emma Thompson), a script by Richard Curtis, long before going on to pen Four Weddings and a Notting Hill; get Mel Smith to direct and rubber-faced Rowan Atkinson to play the villain of the piece. The result is The Tall Guy, probably the greatest comedy of 1989.

I remember going to see it twice at the time and laughing all the way through it, amazed that British comedies could be this good.

It has a huge amount going for it with intelligence, cracking lines and some highly stylised photography by Adrian Biddle.

Curtis' semi-autobiographical script is based on his own days as a fall guy for Atkinson and the result is well worth a look.
