The Fourth Kind (Review)

The Fourth Kind Directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi Seventy-one years after Orson Welles' War of the Worlds radio broadcast convinced the American public of a real-time alien-invasion, writer-director Olatunde Osunsanmi tries a similar gimmick by presenting a cinematic re-creation of supposedly true occurrences in and around the small town of Nome, Alaska, that suggest an alien presence. The Fourth Kind tells us it's based on the research of a psychologist, Dr. Abigail Tyler, who discovered bizarre consistencies in the testimonies of several sleep-deprived patients. Under a series of hypnosis treatments, those patients recovered memories of stalking demonic owls driving them to suicide, occasionally levitation and sometimes leaving them paralyzed. According to the world of science fiction, there are four different encounters between humans and aliens. The first simply refers to a sighting; the second is when a human spots evidence of an alien presence while the third (a la Spielberg »

Review: ‘The Fourth Kind’ Should’ve Been Narrated By Robert Stack

7 November 2009 2:20 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

With the Saw films firmly on the ice flow of sequels toward apocalypse, the question I keep coming back to is, “where are horror films going to go from here?” Saw, and its subsequent imitators, satisfied the bloodlust of modern horror audiences for a time, but the cycle of desensitization continues and if horror films are no longer striving to gross out the public, it is once again time for them to break new ground. It appears that horror is now targeting the fourth wall to achieve that purpose and The Fourth Kind champions the concept. It strikes me as appropriate that this film should be released on the heels of the sensational Paranormal Activity. Both are movies that attempt to breakdown that invisible barrier of disbelief that detaches an audience from the terror on screen. Both claim to be based on a true story which, again, eliminates that safety net of it being “just a movie »

The Fourth Kind

Directed by: Olatunde Osunsanmi

Cast: Milla Jovovich, Elias Koteas, Will Patton

Running Time: 1 hr 35 min

Rating: R

Release Date: November 6, 2009

The Fourth Kind … Fact or Fiction? True or False? It’s Up to You to Decide

Plot: An alleged fact-based film on mysterious disappearances in Nome, Alaska. Abigail Tyler (Jovovich and…Tyler herself?) is a psychoanalyst trying to determine why there are so many similar sleep disturbances in Nome.

Who’S It For? UFOies and conspiracy nuts and the rest of us, as long as we have our trusty grain of salt along for the ride.

Expectations: I thought it would be wildly stupid, because it looked, to me, like a rip off of Paranormal Activity. I was all set to dislike it. Read on for the prize inside!

Scorecard (0-10)

Actors:

Milla Jovovich as Dr. Abigail Tyler: I remember the days when Milla couldn’t act »

Movie Review: The Fourth Kind (2009)

Milla Jovovich in The Fourth Kind

Photo: Universal Pictures Perhaps I am over-reacting, but the "this is real" approach to Universal's alien abduction thriller The Fourth Kind grates on me something fierce. I have no problem with filmmakers saying something is "based on" or "inspired by" true events, but to have your lead actress walk out at the opening of your film and basically say what I am about to watch includes "actual" archived footage and it is up to me to believe it or not is a sleight of hand I have a hard time respecting.

The Fourth Kind is attempting to pull-off the Blair Witch Project "is it really real?" stunt and I'm not sure how it will play with most viewers, but with me it was a distraction overused to the point of annoyance. Making use of the word "actual" along with split-screens, audio readings, Sumerian translations »
