Take one barely skilled Chinese martial artist. Add a beefy hunk of traditional blaxploitation, and top off with a complete selection of Asian actors who played bad guys on M*A*S*H. Stir rigorously.
Bake for two hours under the high heat of Mystery Science Theater 3000-inspired quips, and you end up with the new live DVD from Cinematic Titanic, "East Meats Watts."
This latest release from MST3K veterans Joel Hodgson, Trace Beaulieu, Josh Weinstein, Mary Jo Pehl and Frank Conniff features a clunky 70's mess on celluloid mocked before an affectionate live audience. While Cinematic Titanic's earlier DVD releases all pack more than the U.N.-mandated share of laughs, the energy provided by the comics' interactions with the crowd make this the comic troupe's most successful DVD release so far.

retro trailer: ‘Santa Claus Conquers the Martians’

I’m not sure whether this is actually more unbearable to watch than the movie itself, or whether it’s better just by sheer dint of its being shorter. I might have to watch it again to be sure...
Yup, it’s worse than the movie. There’s gotta be a special kind of hellish antitalent involved in rendering a trailer more hideous than even a hideous film.
This movie is so bad that it’s almost impossible to watch even with the Mystery Science Theater 3000 treatment. This might be one of the Mst episodes in which Joel threatened suicide, but I can’t rightly recall. The host segments, though, are among the very best ever, with lots of holiday craziness, including Crow T. Robot singing his new carol, “A Patrick Swayze Christmas.” Genius.

Rifftrax returns for live Christmas mock fest

The Rifftrax crew unwrapped its second national live broadcast this week from San Diego as Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett took on a series of moldy Christmas short films and sent the results to hundreds of theaters across this great nation of ours.
Over the 90+ minute run of the upbeat show, the Mystery Science Theater 3000 alums steered seemingly innocent holiday-themed shorts and clunky toy advertisements from bygone eras into dark, pitiful entries into irony complete with sexual innuendos and memories of failed Christmas' passed.
Weird Al Yankovic showed up to join in on mocking a delightful, but bizarre look at pork. But the high point of the show was a closing shot at a Max Fleischer directed version of "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" -- including Santa visiting the heroic mammal in his bedroom with the disturbing words: "Rudolph...I need you tonight."

America’s favorite movie hecklers are back for their second live event. This August the Rifftrax crew of Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett (formally of Mystery Science Theatre 3000) performed a hilarious send up of the Ed Wood Classic Plan 9 From Outer Space to a live audience from the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville Tennessee and hundreds of theatres across the country. Now they’re back, bringing that same hilarity to a series of Christmas shorts, just in time for the holidays. I recently had the chance to speak with Michael from Rifftrax about the group’s second live show.
Where will you be riffing from this time?
We are from Escindido which is close to us here in San Diego it’s a center for the performing arts.
Why short films instead of one full length film?
People really love the shorts. We put them out

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Taking Woodstock’ Has Plentiful Atmosphere, Little Depth

Chicago – Ang Lee’s take on the landmark music festival isn’t a film so much as a filmed idea. It aims to capture the atmosphere of the concert without ever showing the actual music. Of course, the real show was the crowd itself.
There’s one lovely shot in “Taking Woodstock” where its protagonist, high on acid, gazes at the countless hordes gathered around the distant main stage. Suddenly, the crowd starts to move like ripples in the water, as they become united by their shared vibes. The image may sound pretentious on paper, but it has a poetry and wonderment that’s largely missing from the rest of the picture.
Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0
There are few writer-director teams in film history that have tackled as many diverse genres as James Schamus and Ang Lee. Their collaborations include “The Ice Storm,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” and “Lust, Caution,” though “Taking Woodstock

Are you tired of having to set up your Vcr to watch your favorite old tapes of Mystery Science Theater 3000? Does the thought of syncing up Mike Nelson's Rifftrax audio to a movie make your brain feel like its time for a nap? Do the convenience and reliability of DVDs seem like too much hassle to fulfill your MST3K itch?
Now the laziest human beings on the planet can enjoy the classic MST3K series on the web, that is if they don't consider moving a mouse and a minimal amount of typing too much physical activity for one day.
Hulu has picked up five episodes of the series from the fourth, fifth and sixth season including such famous episodes as Super Agent Secret Dragon, Monster-a-Go-Go and (my personal favorite both on and off the Satellite of Love's screen) The Giant Gila Monster. Watch it, then get some exercise,

Five episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000 are now on Hulu! Honk if you love Eegah, friends. Weirdly, I tweeted about these MST3K glasses just yesterday, so my nerd senses are seriously tingling. So far, "The Starfighters," "Secret Agent Super Dragon," "Monster A-Go-Go," "The Rebel Set," and "The Giant Gila Monster" (from seasons 4, 5, and 6) are up, but alas, my two faves have not yet made the cut: "Boggy Creek II: And The Legend Continues" and "Eegah," lovingly quoted above. What about you, PopWatchers? What's your favorite Mystery Science Theater 3000? And do you sit through whole movies on Hulu,

Recent Saw sequels and Diane Keaton projects validate that film mockery is necessary to our lives. A real shame, because the practice was mastered, patented, and cemented in time on the finest cult TV show of the 1990s, Mystery Science Theater 3000. Beginning as Twin Cities public access programming in 1988 before expanding to The Comedy Channel (which became Comedy Central) and ending its run on Sci Fi, MST3K followed a space-traveling adventurer -- first creator Joel Hodgson, then Michael Nelson starting in '93 -- who was forced to watch terrible movies with his snappy robot pals. The payoff for viewers included 90 minutes of real cinematic trash and the hostages' sarcastic film commentary. Now that five fabulous episodes have appeared on Hulu (including the infamous jet-fighter doozy The Starmaster), let's start wishing for our favorite celebrity-laden episodes to appear. When Whatever, Martha! was first conceived and I wrote about it, I was doubtful that the show would succeed in really ripping Martha. I thought they're comparing the comedy to Mystery Science Theater 3000 in the press release was setting the bar too high and they would fall on their faces. Well, guess what? They were right and I was wrong. Whatever, Martha! works and it is very funny.
Things should get really interesting on the show when the butt of the jokes -- Martha herself -- appears on Whatever, Martha! tonight, Wednesday, December 2. On Fine Living.
Martha will be on with the stars, Jennifer Koppelman Hutt and Alexis Stewart, to dish about classic clips from Martha Stewart Living.

Here are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.
It's funny how there are some weeks where there's 20 or so different DVD sets released but I won't see any sets that I want. And then there are weeks like this when there are only a handful of DVDs being released but I somehow want two or three of them.
The new Mystery Science Theater 3000 set (with The Corpse Vanishes, Warrior of the Lost World, Night of the Blood Beast, Santa Claus, two shorts, four lobby cards, and a collectible Tom Servo figurine) is a definite, and I might get Better Off Ted too, though I want to watch a few more episodes before I make up my mind.

You may not have gotten the day off for this momentous day in American history (damn you, socialist government!), but today marks a very special anniversary: the first ever episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000.
The show officially hit the airwaves on a local Minneapolis station, Ktma, on Thanksgiving Day in 1988 by a young, fresh-faced Joel Hodgson. The rest, as people who rely on cheap cliches to heighten the dramatic effect with their weak words, is history. You can read the rest at the Satellite News site, the most exhaustive and interesting MST3K site on the Internet.
Every fan of the show and even occasional glancers remembers where they were when they first discovered this kind of cult comedy classics. For me, I discovered it with my old man who hates it when I call him my old man during the hilarious Pod People episode, arguably the funniest episode for

One of the strangest things about film fans is the way we are all, on occasion, gluttons for punishment. I'm not sure what it is about truly wretched films that draws film fans to watch and rewatch them for pleasure, but it's a near-universal truth that every now and then, it's an almost chemical pleasure to put on something physically painful just so you can gasp at the ineptitude and laugh yourself silly. There's a reason "Mystery Science Theater 3000" hit a nerve with all sorts of movie geeks when it premiered... it felt like someone took the private parties that

In addition to assembling a fantastic list of perpetually rewatchable movies, many of the posters who joined in the party here the other day provided intriguing criteria for what makes a film addictive: Commenters celebrated the pleasures of comfort movies, noise movies, great movies, romantic movies, crying movies, cheesy movies, guilty-pleasure movies, and so-bad-they're-good movies, among other categories.
It's the so-bad-they're-good subdivision I'm most interested in at the moment, an unintentional genre that I think of as relatively new-and just possibly dangerous. I mean, remember the genius cult TV creation Mystery Science Theater 3000? When stranded human Joel Robinson and

MST3K goes bite size with Rifftrax Shorts DVDs

Somehow, those little bite-sized Snickers and Milky Ways you got as Halloween Trick or Treat candy always seemed to taste better than the bigger ones you can snag in any store.
That's kind of the effect you get from watching a new pair of laugh-out-loud Shorts DVDs from Rifftrax -- Wide World of Shorts and Shorts-Tacular Shorts-Stravaganza.
The commentary of Mystery Science Theater 3000 alums Michael J. Nelson, Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy can usually make any movie funny. But, the riffs you buy off their website for major feature films can sometimes come with a cost.
For example, the problem with buying the riffs for Twilight or Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is you then have to sit there and watch Twilight or Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. That's a razor's edge trade-off for a few laughs.

I have an odd fascination with fan made videos. I don't care if it's a 12 year old who got his hands on a copy of Adobe Premiere or a grown man who edits together fan made trailers for films that never existed (I love me some Raiders of the Lost Ark 1951 or Ghostbusters 1954), if someone spends enough time to put together a video born out of their passion for film, chances are I'm probably going to watch it at least once. Now, if you happen to edit together a music video for a catchy song comprised of film quotes, well, I'm probably going to play it on a loop for at least half an hour.
That is exactly what I've been doing with the below music video for Ricardo Autobahn's "The Golden Age of Video". Ricardo's own site describes it as "an epic production constructed of disco beats and
