We’ve seen a lot of origin stories in the past few years – Wolverine just came out this summer, Magneto may or may not be happening, there is always Superman and of course Batman’s origin has been told several times. Heck, The Hobbit can even be considered an origin story. Ghost Rider was unfortunately given an origin movie that dated back to the old west. I’m a huge fan of Tremors and the 4th movie went back to the old west as well, for an origin story about the subterranean monster worm.
So I understand why studios and copyright holders want to make origin movies on comic book characters and even monsters, but I cannot for the life of me figure out this latest news coming from “wrastlin” news site Lords of Pain. WWE, in a bid to capitalize on one of their brands, is in the process »

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.
The old joke is that all actors want to direct. Though it’s maybe not true of all, I still had plenty to choose from in making this list. The directors on this list all started life as actors, some still are, but I’d argue that they’re better known as directors. This month, two well known actresses have tried their hand at direction, Drew Barrymore with Whip It (which was a great movie, I have no idea why it did so badly) and Natalie Portman doing a segment of New York I Love You. Who knows, maybe one (or both) has a second career around the corner.
7. A Woman Under the Influence (1974)
Directed by John Cassavetes
Recap: A portrait of family in crisis when a woman (Gena Rowlands) goes mad and her husband (Peter Falk) tries to understand it.

Jim Carrey unearthed an interesting fact while researching the role of Ebenezer Scrooge for the new A Christmas Carol movie - author Charles Dickens based his miser on actor Cary Elwes' relative.
The funnyman is sketchy on his facts, but he's keen to find out if the story linking The Princess Bride star Elwes' great-great-great uncle to Scrooge is really fact or just a myth.
He tells WENN, "I gathered Scrooge was actually based on one of Cary Elwes' great, great, great uncles; I think it's John Elwes, but I'll have to check on the name.
"One of his relatives was a model for that character. He was a member of Parliament and he was so cheap that he would wear the same clothes all the time, even though they were in tatters. He would wear a wig that he found in the garbage. He wouldn't buy new game until he had eaten all the meat - even if it was rancid he would finish it.
"So he was the character that Dickens based this story on." »

Is there any more exciting film staple than pirates? Pillaging, raping, kidnapping, cannon-firing, parrot-owning, Sicilian-beating, Keith Richards-loving, one leg missing, singing and dancing pirates! And now we can add real-life pirates to the list thanks to those pesky Somalian rapscallions who've been terrorizing the coast of Africa for the past several years. Per Variety, Columbia Pictures has hired Billy Ray to write a film based on the five-day hostage drama that played out earlier this year. More specifically, the film will center on Captain Richard Phillips whose life story rights as well as the rights to his upcoming book were optioned by Columbia. Phillips was held hostage by pirates before being rescued by Navy Seals. Spoiler alert! Ray's most recent work as screenwriter includes State of Play, Breach, and Flightplan. He also has a Westworld remake and the potential Ryan Reynolds vehicle Motorcade on his plate as well. This project is easily a year or more »

How do you know it's almost Halloween? Another Saw movie opening is a sure clue. While it seems like yesterday that The Princess Bride's Cary Elwes was screaming out in agonizing pain in the first episode, yes, boys and girls, we've now arrived at installment six. In case you missed one here or there, or just can't get enough of the crazy "games" set up by Jigsaw and his devious apprentices, then Lionsgate has your tricks and treats lined up in the form of this Thursday's Saw Marathon, a one-day event happening October 22nd at select theaters - leading right into a midnight screening of Saw VI. For all you filmgoers with a huge love of horror (and a strong constitution), here's your chance to catch all of the terrors, story, mythology...

This may not be the best time to be developing a movie about a young boy and a flying contraption, but I guess the adaptation of Eoin Colfer's "Airman" won't be arriving in theaters for awhile. The movie, which Variety reveals Robert Zemeckis is producing as his latest entry into the performance capture animation trend, will be directed by Gil Kenan ("City of Ember") and scripted by Ann Peacock, who previously adapted "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe."
Set in the 19th century off the coast of Ireland, "Airman" tells of a flight-obsessed boy wrongly sent to prison for allegedly killing his king. Not only does he escape from his jail by building a flying machine, he also constructs gliders that help him rescue a princess, save his family and otherwise act the hero as a swashbuckling pilot of homemade air transports. He even »

From working FX on SNL and Letterman to creating monsters for Dark Shadows, Andrew Clement has some tales to tell. Recently-wrapped on the reboot of A Nightmare On Elm Street (for which he redesigned Freddy Krueger), Jason Anders caught up with Clement for a candid conversation about his world of Creative Character Engineering.
Ja/Fangoria: So let's begin with your work as a make-up artist for NBC's Saturday Night Live; tell me about the work you did for the show, how you became involved, the memories you have being around the cast of actors, and which seasons you were involved in.
AC: I wish I had been involved in the first few seasons of SNL, it was such a fertile time for the show. Unfortunately, or fortunately, I’m not quite that old. As it is, I watched those shows in Jr. High and High School, and now I have the DVD’s. »

If I were an executive at CBS, I would never want to do business with actor Mandy Patinkin again. Even though Mandy is a terrific actor and one of my personal favorites -- I loved him on Broadway in Evita and Sunday in the Park with George, not to mention on screen in The Princess Bride and Yentl -- his history with CBS is abominable.
He was an Emmy-winning star on Chicago Hope, then left after a couple of seasons to be closer to his family in New York. Okay, that was understandable. Then after getting Criminal Minds off to a great start, he walked out of that show, citing creative differences.
Apparently, someone has said let bygones be bygones because Mandy Patinkin will be a guest star on Three Rivers. Maybe because this is a very personal issue with Mandy, he's convinced the powers that be to let him return to the network, »

Greetings Fango Fiends! It's time once again for another installment of Fangoria Musick's Lists Of Doom - the column where we track down some of your favorite (or soon-to-be favorite) bands to get their thoughts on on the world of horror, and which films scare them.
For our 27th feature, we caught up with John Cooper, Lead Vocalist & Bassist of Skillet, the Grammy-nominated band that recently released Awake on Atlantic Records. A certified connoisseur of pop culture with "an irrational love for comic books, Star Wars, and mostly all thing science fiction", it was time for Fango to pick his brain to find out what he digs on the Horror side of life. After all, with a new single and video called "Monster", there had to be something brewing beneath the surface, right?

Ya’ know, since it’s Halloween coming up at the end of the month, I thought it would be appropriate to make a list of the top 5 movies that, for whatever reason, just scared the hell out of me. It may not be the entire movie, maybe it was just a particular scene/moment; they may not be the technically Best horror movies (they may not even be strictly “horror” per se.), but just something about them had me hiding behind the pillow, jumping at every noise, looking through the cracks in my fingers, thinking about it for days afterwards, and… changing my underwear — okay, too much information…
Before I get on with the list, just know that (like every list) this is purely opinion and therefore it obviously isn’t going to match Your list. If a movie that you find particularly scary isn’t on my list then »

If you've ever craved cupcakes while watching your favorite movie or set out a themed feast for an afternoon with friends, or just happen to be in Brooklyn for today's Brooklyn Book Festival, you should meet Daniellan Louie. She got her start baking confections for her friends and family and, in 2006, she opened Ivy Bakery. Now she has a menu with over 300 items, which she makes from scratch herself, specializes in custom orders, and has a list of many impressive clients including Marvel Comics, Columbia Pictures, and the Tribeca Film Festival.
I first ran across mention of Ivy Bakery on Twitter when some friends were tweeting about Princess Bride-themed cupcakes. Since then, I have been following the bakery on Twitter for daily updates on what she is baking ( today's offerings include: "Red Velvet Cake with Vanilla Buttercream shaped like Kingdom of Hearts Key" ). I know that many people in fandom have dietary restrictions, »

...there were scrapbooks (prev. pt 1)
Let's continue that silly reveal of my "Movies of the Eighties" scrapbook. I'm still hoping to locate the "Movie Stars of the Eighties" companion volume in which I ranked all the actors and actresses of the decade. Wouldn't that be a Rotfl experience? If I can find it I will share, despite the loss of dignity it will surely occasion.
Behold! To your left is the tv guide cover that started it all. I guess it wasn't an actual TV Guide as my personal mythology has always relayed but whatever television magazine thingie was inserted into the Detroit Free Press back in the day. That cover right there started my whole Oscar obsession -- look how worn, damaged and fingered it is. I thumbed through it so many times. What is this naked gold man they call Oscar??? This cover unlocked my latent awards mania. »

Best part of Harry Potter? The Acromantulas. Best part of The Princess Bride? The Rodents of Unusual Size. Best part of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids? The fight between the giant ant and giant scorpion. (Because all suburban neighborhood backyards are infested with scorpions.) Point being, there has always been something about gigantic versions of smaller animals that have fascinated us. Why else would they constantly pop up in fantasy, dating from as far back as ancient Greece, whose mythology hosted a large menagerie of freakishly huge beasts? But what's the real scoop? This is a mighty big world we live in, with a very large and complex history, and evolution can do a lot of wacky things when you're not paying attention. »

Photo: Universal Studios Home Entertainment Top 10 Great Movie Deaths Movies love to kill people, and actors love to die (preferably slowly and with a great close-up). Yet, more often than not, film fatalities are an accountant's errand. Just another tally mark in the body count. This isn't a list celebrating the art of ludicrous squibs and exploding craniums. The following movie deaths deliver more oomph than henchmen #4 getting steamrolled by the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile. These are the death scenes we remember long after the actors have screamed, slobbered, cried, coughed, wheezed, or drawn out to William Shatner-esque lengths their final words. They are a perfect combination of acting, writing, filmmaking, image and idea. Some are shocking. Some are sad or bittersweet. Others funny. Some deaths you cheer on. All are memorable. Let's begin to experience ten (technically eleven) great ends, and considering the nature of this list, yes, there are spoilers, »

"Shazam!" apparently isn't as dead as what has been reported earlier this year. According to The Hollywood Reporter, actor-turned-writer Bill Birch has been picked up by Warner Bros. Pictures to reboot this adaptation of a DC Comics series that features Captain Marvel. In scripting the screenplay, he will get a helping hand from DC Comics writer Geoff Johns.
Currently writing Warners' "One Finger Salute", Birch who has starred in such series as "The Unit" and "Just Shoot Me!" is the sixth writer brought into the project to pen the screenplay. "The Princess Bride" scribe William Goldman, "The Basketball Diaries" writer Bryan Goluboff, "Garfield" screenwriters Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow, and "Big Fish" penner John August have all taken a crack at adapting the comic series.
Birch's co-writer, Johns, is one of the three DC Comics heavyweights hired by the studio to act as consultants on DC projects. With the tapping of Birch and Johns, »

A couple of new screenwriter updates today. Warner Brothers has hired former actor Billy Birch and DC Comics writer Geoff Johns to kick-start and co-write a new version of the Shazam! movie that never got off the ground. Birch is the sixth writer to take a crack at adapting the character Captain Marvel following William Goldman (The Princess Bride), Bryan Goluboff (The Basketball Diaries), Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow (Garfield) and John August (Big Fish, The Nines). Last we heard in back in January, the project was dead, but apparently Get Smart's Peter Segal is still attached to direct and is waiting for the new script. In other news, Spielberg's new DreamWorks has hired Oscar winning screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin (Ghost, Jacob's Ladder, The Time Traveler's Wife) to write an English remake of the 2002 Japanese cult hit Resurrection, which has tentatively been re-titled to Rainbow Bridge.
