Roddenberry on list of TV Hall of Fame inductees

10 November 2009 3:38 PM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

This might sound more overdue than According to Jim's cancellation, but one of TV's greatest creators is getting the Hall of Fame treatment.

Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry will join the ranks of the Television Academy's Hall of Fame next year at a special induction ceremony at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Other inductees include Candice Bergen, production and art director Charles Lisanby, announcer Don Pardo, Tom and Dick Smothers and game show producer Bob Stewart. Is there anyone that they left off the list?

Review: "Make the Yuletide Gay" Makes the Holidays Mildly Amusing at Best

9 November 2009 10:08 AM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

There’s really something of a holiday movie curse, isn’t there? Hundreds of Christmas movies have been made over the years, but most are terrible. You can count the number of decent ones on one hand.

I’d love to be able to say that Make the Yuletide Gay, the latest film from gay indie writer-director Rob Williams (Long-Term Relationship, Back Soon), breaks the holiday movie curse.

It doesn’t.

I feel like I have a lump of coal in my heart writing a negative review of this sweet, simple gay-themed holiday comedy. But it’s just not a very good movie.

Gunn, a young gay college student who is totally out on campus, still hasn’t come out to his parents. On the way home for the Christmas holidays, he stops at a public restroom to “de-gay” himself, changing his clothes and messing up his hair (but disappointing »

Star Trek (2009) Blu-ray Review

6 November 2009 10:56 PM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Space. The Final Frontier. A place few were willing to venture with the last two Star Trek: The Next Generation helmed films. On virtual life support, J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot collaborators reinvented the iconic franchise into something hardened Star Trek fans and casual moviegoers without an ounce of prior interest in the series could equally digest and enjoy. His efforts carried Star Trek into a new frontier of success and riches at the 2009 box office, to a place where Paramount's treatment of the Blu-ray Disc release should . and marvelously does - fall into the esteemed category of exemplary.

Star Trek's reboot begins with a huge bang, a knockout prologue that chronicles the birth of James T. Kirk and the death of his father, a Starship Captain (for twelve minutes), all during a surprise attack by a renegade Romulan Nero (Eric Bana). Flash forward a quarter of a »

Wesley Crusher Was In Jj Abrams' Star Trek!

5 November 2009 12:45 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

If you were of a certain age when Star Trek: The Next Generation debuted on network television, then Will Wheaton is your hero. And while everyone worried if Shatner would get a part in Jj Abrams. new Star Trek maybe you, like me, wondered if there.d ever again be a place on the Enterprise for Wesley Crusher. Guess what? There was. It seems Wheaton actually was in Star Trek this past summer. Or rather, his voice was. Will revealed one of the movies biggest secrets on his yesterday when he dropped the bomb that he provided voices for almost all of the Romulans in the film. Says Wheaton, .I ended up providing voices for all the Romulans on Nero's ship, including the guy who tells him that "it's time" at the very beginning of the movie.. Of course as one of the perks of being involved in the film, »

Star Trek: The Next Generation: Wil Wheaton was in the Star Trek Movie?

5 November 2009 8:58 AM, PST | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

The Jj Abrams-directed Star Trek movie includes several allusions and tips of the hat to its predecessors. Aside from Leonard Nimoy, there are cameo appearances by numerous Trek veterans of the past. Actor Wil Wheaton has just revealed that he's one of them.

It seems that Wheaton, who's best known to Trek fans for playing Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation, did some voice work on the movie. As he tells it, the job came about through text messaging with Abrams' friend Greg Grunberg.

Wheaton says he had a great time and recorded about three pages of dialogue on an Adr soundstage with Abrams. He provided all of the voices for the Romulans on Nero's ship, including the one who tells the villain "it's time" at the start of the movie.

While much of his voice work has »

Capt. Janeway in 'Star Trek' Sequel?

3 November 2009 10:20 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

She hasn’t even seen the new Star Trek film yet, but Kate Mulgrew, who played Captain Kathryn Janeway in the Star Trek: Voyager TV series, already wants in on the rebooted franchise.

Mulgrew's Captain Janeway also had a cameo in the 2002 movie Star Trek: Nemesis. When asked if she would consider a role in the rebooted Trek film series by J.J. Abrams, she responded, "I would, I'd love to return to Janeway. I'd love to do her in a movie."

Writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are currently developing a storyline for the Trek sequel, and in a separate interview, Abrams said any worry about bringing back established characters was negated by the first film’s success. In this summer’s Star Trek, Leonard Nimoy, who originated the Spock role, played an older, time-traveling version of himself.

According to Coventry Telegraph, Mulgrew admitted she has yet to watch Abrams' movie, »

Alien Encounters – Television's Memorable Extra-Terrestrials

30 October 2009 10:12 AM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Anna, the face of the Visitors - V

With the upcoming launch of "V",  it makes it the perfect time to reminisce about our favorite aliens of yore.   The extra-terrestrials who land on earth seem to come in three varieties:  aggressors, refugees, and observers.   But whether they have come to Earth with world domination on their minds, or they simply want to study the local ugly giant bags of mostly water, they almost always seem to stick around for a while.

So click-through and check out some of TVOvermind's favorite, and not so favorite aliens on television.

Aggressors

We've got a pretty nice planet here.  And they want it.  They want our resources; they consider us to be lower life forms and want us to supplement their food supply; they just want us dead.  No matter how you slice it, we are going to have a fight on our hands. »

Star Trek The Next Generation Motion Picture Collection Blu-ray Review

22 October 2009 2:59 PM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Paramount set a high bar with the Star Trek Movie Collection featuring the original series cast earlier this year. Those standards carry through to the second half of the complete series run, the Star Trek: The Next Generation Motion Picture Collection.

This series of films 7-10 begins with a passing of the torch from Kirk to Picard in Generations and then moves full warp ahead with the new cast in fan-favorite and my pick for the best film in the set, First Contact. Insurrection represents a creative step back for the franchise with less mass appeal, and the darker Nemesis is the most forgettable live action Star Trek film and consequently was the last before the J.J. Abrams reboot in early 2009.

The Next Generation DVD transfers were heavily knocked for being overly digitally manipulated with less than stellar results. Paramount has applied some slight artificial cleansing in the form of »

10/21/09: Mythbusters – “Dirty versus Clean Car”

22 October 2009 3:26 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Mythbusters

Mythbusters” has been one of my favorite television shows since its debut in 2003. The romanticized viewpoint of the scientific world leads everyone to believe that scientists spend their days wearing pristine white lab coats, sitting in state-of-the-art laboratories, making triumphant discoveries, further advancing the world, then going home to debate Star Trek vs Star Trek: The Next Generation with their chat room buddies. To outsiders, this is an illusion we don’t want tarnished by bothersome details such as “facts,” or “reality.” The Mythbusters bend this illusion just ever so slightly and allow us, the viewing audience, to see the scientific method in action.

The primary myth of tonight’s episode concerned aerodynamics. Conceivably, a car’s gas mileage differs depending on whether or not the car is clean. I had the privilege of watching tonight’s episode with my father, an actual scientist. He is an aerospace engineer for Boeing. »

'Big Bang Theory': Wheeeaatonnnn! (Also, Wolowitz kinda gets a girlfriend)

20 October 2009 1:23 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

It would appear, Big Bang theorists, that Sheldon has finally found his Khan -- or, maybe, his Kirk. See, if, like me, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is one of your favorite sci-fi flicks of all time, you probably noticed that the normally exacting Shedon became hilariously unmoored in his white hot rage for Star Trek: The Next Generation wunderkind Wil Wheaton. Quoting both Khan Noonien Singh ("From Hell's heart, I stab at thee!"), and, in a fashion, Capt. James T. Kirk  ("Wheeeaatonnnn!"), it was unclear whether Sheldon saw himself as a wronged, genetically superior supervillian battling to destroy Wheaton's impetuous Kirk, »

Review: The Big Bang Theory - The Creepy Candy Coating Corollary

19 October 2009 9:29 PM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

(S03E05) What a dick. It turns out that former Squadder Wil Wheaton, who guest-starred on tonight's episode as himself, is totally the Jonny Fairplay of fantasy role-playing card game tournaments, who broke Sheldon's poor little heart not once, but twice. I love the fact that Sheldon has this vendetta against Wheaton in the first place, because of course Sheldon Cooper would consider the guy who played Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: Tng to be his mortal enemy. The only thing that surprised me about that is that Sheldon's complaint was due to a slight that happened in the real world, and not some scientific inconsistency in the show, or Crusher's anachronistic hair.

When Sheldon and Wil are skirmishing to the death, there's a part of me that was thinking that the story of Wil's grandma was a lie, but he's Wil Wheaton! They wouldn't actually make him evil, would they? »

Get down to the bumping bass of 'SuvwI'pu' qan tu'lu'be'

If you thought the phlegm filled syllables of the Klingon language couldn't make ordinary human music sound as sweet as the innocent cheeps of a nest of newborn birds, then you'd be right.

Klenginem, a member of the Klingon tribe (I don't know what the politically correct term for Klingon is these days, Romulan-Americans?), has turned Eminem's self-serving ditty "Without Me" into a self-serving Klingon ditty.

Don't try and sing along if you aren't fluent in the words of the warrior, or it will turn your esophagus inside out.

And the Next 'Star Trek' Movie Villain Is...

18 October 2009 9:05 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Everybody's asking the question: "Who's going to serve as the villain or villains in the sequel to last summer's Star Trek?" Now that we're in an alternate Trek timeline, writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are free to tell stories that incorporate familiar faces but combine them in new and interesting ways.

Which got us thinking: who's likely to make the short list, and what sort of possible stories/combinations might we see? Will the filmmakers choose to go the route of borrowing once more from canon...or will they elect to craft an entirely new story with entirely new antagonists?

Since new antagonists are impossible to predict, we decided to look to the original canon and have offered a list of possible villains from which Orci and Kurtzman could choose. We've divided the categories up into four groups:

The Heavy Hitters

The Middleweight Contenders

The Individual Narcissists

Wil Wheaton Arrives on The Big Bang Theory Next Week

16 October 2009 12:54 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

A little over a month ago TVOvermind brought you news of Wil Wheaton guest starring on an upcoming episode of The Big Bang Theory, and now, thanks to some episode reshuffling, this coming Monday (Oct 19) will mark his appearance.  CBS announced a few days ago that the previously scheduled episode, "The Cornhusker Vortex", would be reshuffled to a later date and this weeks episode would be "The Creepy Candy Coating Corollary" which guest stars Wheaton as himself.  We've even got the pictures below, as well as a press release from CBS with the details (thanks for the headsup TVFanatic!)

Wil Wheaton ("Star Trek: The Next Generation") Guest Stars As Himself

Bryan Singer: I Want More X-Men

12 October 2009 5:47 AM, PDT | AirlockAlpha.com | See recent Airlock Alpha news »

He may have passed on the third installment of the trilogy in favor of "Superman Returns," but director Bryan Singer wants to make a comeback to the X-Men franchise. "I've been talking to Fox about it," Singer told The Hollywood Reporter. "I love Hugh Jackman. I love the cast." This reveal may come as a surprise given the cull that took place in "X-Men 3: The Last Stand," which was directed by Brett Ratner. However Singer hasn't quite confirmed in what form his return would take. Following the end credits of "The Last Stand" was a small screen hinting that Charles Xavier, played by "Star Trek: The Next Generation" veteran Patrick Stewart, may have survived his brush with the Dark Phoenix, played by Famke Janssen, meaning that a fourth movie could indeed be on the cards. Jj Abrams Talks Star Trek 2!

9 October 2009 6:29 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The filmmakers behind this summer's hit movie discuss the upcoming sequel to the popular re-imagined franchise

One of the most popular films of this past summer was the re-imagining of Star Trek, so naturally fans can't wait for the inevitable sequel to the film. The movie saw the re-telling (in an alternate time-line) of the early days of the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise so now that the stage has been set fans can't wait to see where the filmmakers take the series next. Director J.J. Abrams and writers Roberto Orci and Alec Kurtzman appeared at an event in Santa Monica yesterday to speak about the upcoming DVD and Blue Ray versions of the film and answered some questions about the upcoming sequel.

Abrams began by discussing the upcoming project, which is just in the early stages of brainstorming right now according to the writers. The director was »

Wil Wheaton to Guest Star on The Big Bang Theory

5 October 2009 4:52 PM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Sheldon's biggest dreams are about to come true.

Wil Wheaton (best known as Wesley Crusher from Star Trek: The Next Generation; and recently seen on Leverage) will guest star on the October 19 episode of The Big Bang Theory.

“As much as Sheldon loves Star Trek, Wil Wheaton is the only person associated with the franchise whom Sheldon has sworn eternal enmity toward,” the actor said when asked about by TV Guide Magazine about his role.

So, why does Sheldon have such animosity for Wheaton? The character apparently did not enjoy an autograph experience with Wil many years ago.

“The Wil I play in the Big Bang universe is not such a nice person,” Wheaton said. “But in real life, I go out of my way to be kind and patient. My motto is: ‘Don’t be a d---!’”

This premise, though, sounds like it sets up perfectly for a slew »

Alynda Wheat's Beat Cop: 'Three Rivers' might need some CPR

My name is Alynda and I am an organ donor. There, now everybody knows and we don't have to go through any confusion or sticky sitches in the hospital, Three Rivers-style. What did you think of the Rivers debut, the few of you who watched it? (If you missed it, by the way, you can catch it here.) I'm still trying to decide if I'm giving it too much leeway because star Alex O'Loughlin is in my imaginary-boyfriend stable (and we're pretty serious, with his having met my mom and all). But I'll try to be objective. Let's start »

Gil Birmingham Playing On The Set Of 'Eclipse' And Miley Cyrus Is Feeling Better In Today's Twitter-Wood

Warmoth's out again today. He hates me, you see. Really though, he busts his rear for this column and he gets a break whenever he wants it. The Twitter-Wood was relatively quiet today, but not so quiet that I've got nothing for you. Aubrey O'Day made some noise with a fairly scandalous TwitPic, the one that earned today's Twitter Pic of the Day honors. There were some strong runner-up contenders however from Danny Masterson and Fred Durst.

On the text tweet front, Amber Benson talks about her painful future as a roller derby girl, Rainn Wilson makes a startling observation, Michael McKean comes up with a brilliant movie idea and Ice-t addresses a very personal rumor. Plus, Gil Birmingham from the totally unpopular "Twilight" series brings an update from the set of "Eclipse." I'm @geminibros and this is your Twitter-Wood for October 2, 2009. Have a kickass weekend, y'all.
