Original Air Date—22 November 2004 Radical activist and writer, born in Worcester, Massachusetts, USA. After graduating from Brandeis University (1959) and earning a masters in psychology from the University of California, Berkeley (1960), he joined civil-rights workers in the South before returning to Worcester to work as a salesman for a pharmaceutical company. He cut his teeth as an activist in Worcester (c.1960-6), where he especially assisted minority youth. Moving to New York City (1966), he ran a theater and helped organize 'hippies' in the East Village. He came to national prominence as a Yippie leader during the violent anti-war demonstrations ('days of rage') in Chicago (1968) and the much-publicized Chicago Seven trial (1969). Arrested for possession of cocaine (1973), he went underground (1974) and assumed the name Barry Freed in Fineview, NY, where he worked on environmental concerns. Resurfacing on the television show '20/20' (1980), he surrendered to authorities and spent less than a year in prison. Among his several books are Steal this Book and Revolution for the Hell of It. His last public demonstration (1986) was in support of an anti-Central Intelligence Agency protest at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, along with President Jimmy Carter's daughter, Amy Carter. Evidently in a bout of depression, he committed suicide.

Original Air Date—16 March 2002 His vision transformed American theater. But he didn't live to see the debut of his greatest work on Broadway. Eugene O'Neill achieved fame in the 1920s with a series of powerful plays exploring pain, loneliness, family and loss. His works were instrumental in leading American theater away from Vaudeville and toward serious entertainment. But he had gone twenty years without a hit before the posthumous success of Long Day's Journey Into Night. This feature-length BIOGRAPHY® reveals how O'Neill worked his entire life to come to grips with the dark secrets of his family, and how this struggle took a deep personal toll on him while propelling his work to transcendent heights. Playwrights and actors like Edward Albee, John Guare and Gabriel Byrne explore his towering legacy, while a more personal view of his life is provided by his grandchildren and other confidantes. Through his struggle to understand the world and his place in it, Eugene O'Neill created some of the finest and most enduring plays of all time.

Original Air Date—7 July 2000 Biography of Morgan Fairchild, a Dallas, Texas, native who became one of the most prolific nighttime soap opera actresses of the 1980's. A shy child, Morgan found herself through acting in local theatre productions in Dallas, and she moved to New York at age 23, landing a starmaking role on the daytime soap "Search for Tomorrow" after only 6 weeks in the city! She left that show in 1977 and made her way to Hollywood. Prime time stardom soon arrived in the form of the flashy drama series "Flamingo Road." This new series was so popular and so sexy that Morgan soon found herself under attack by self-righteous Rev. Donald Wildmon, who criticized the show's sexual frankness and called Morgan "the worst woman in America." Morgan went on to prove herself as an actress by starring in "Paper Dolls," "Falcon Crest," and "The City." She also became a dedicated activist, standing up for various causes including the environment and AIDS (she was one of the first celebrities to speak out about the need for funding for AIDS research).

Original Air Date—???? The career and personal life of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. He quickly became one of Italy's most intelligent and menacing young Socialists. He broke with Italian Socialist Party after advocating intervention in World War I. In 1922, he became prime minister, and by 1925, he had established himself as dictator. His rule saw an official totalitarian system; the establishment of the Vatican state; the annexation of Abyssinia and Albania; and the formation of the Axis with Germany. His declaration of war on Britain and France was followed by a series of defeats in Africa and in the Balkans. Following the Allied invasion of Sicily, his supporters deserted him, and he was overthrown and arrested. Rescued from imprisonment by German paratroopers, he was placed in charge of the puppet Italian Social Repbulic, but in 1945 he was captured by the Italian Resistance and executed.

Original Air Date—2005 Google's meteoric rise to internet stardom is one of the great business sagas of our time. The sons of college professors, Larry Page and Sergey Brin - two brainy Stanford University grad students who founded the company - say their goal was to make the entire world's information searchable and instantly accessible. At last count, they were answering 200 million queries a day. As with the invention of the internet, it's changing our lives in ways we couldn't imagine. Google became the world's number one search engine because it returned better, more relevant search results faster than the competition. How it does that is a secret, but enough is known among search engine experts to unlock some of the mysteries of this conceptually simple yet infinitely complex software.

The Hunchback was introduced to the world in French author Victor Hugo's 1831 novel, Notre-Dame de Paris (The Hunchback of Notre Dame). This novel, which portrays Paris life during Louis XI's reign, was a thinly-veiled criticism of French society: a society that, symbolized by the evil archdeacon Frollo and soldier Phoebus, is constantly tormenting the already downtrodden Quasimondo and his gypsy friend Esmerelda. |
