Rapped And Tagged: Examining the Annual Devilz Nite

18 hours ago | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

For the unaware, www.horrorcore.com is one of the largest outlets of the horrorcore/wicked shit musical genres the online market has to offer. For nearly a decade the site has played host to some of the most promising horrorcore veterans and prospects alike. Horrorcore powerhouses such as Mars, Menacide, Psycho Jesus, Kid Crusher, Q-Strange, and Insane Poetry have all been known to frequent the website, as well as quite a few of those future shiners like J.Hexx, bOb e. NiTe, and CrAkD (to name a few).

Well, back in 2003, the aforementioned Menacide launched what would become an annual horrorcore.com tradition; each Halloween a collection of the best holiday themed music the site has to offer would be compiled into one mass collection and released under the Devilz Nite moniker. Over the years some excellent work has graced the Devilz Nite compilations; terrific appearances from the likes of Sinister X, »

Denver Film Festival: I've Seen 'Troll 2' and Lived

15 November 2009 10:03 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

When I was writing the short-lived Horror Virgin series for Horror Squad, I received a lot of messages asking me if I had Troll 2 scheduled as part of my education. I would constantly stress to them that the point was for me to watch good horror movies, not bad ones, but it didn't matter. Everyone still thought I should see Troll 2 right after Halloween or Friday the 13th.

Well, I've seen it and I'm glad I waited to see it at a midnight showing with like-minded people instead of sitting at home with a copy. This is the kind of movie that needs to be seen with a crowd and with a couple of drinks in your system because it's really that bad. I don't know if it's the worst movie I've ever seen (the 1986 Trick or Treat comes awfully close, as does Frogs), but it certainly comes very close. »

The Video Dead (Almost) on DVD

12 November 2009 4:03 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

You remember the VHS cover: a zombie, clawing its way out of a TV set. And that title? Totally 80’s, totally in blue neon with drippy, gruesome, haunted house lettering: The Video Dead, my friends. Heck it used to be on USA every Saturday growing up, hawked by Rhonda Shear or Commander USA. Well, as you know, it’s not on DVD ... yet.

Cut to: Mr. Chris MacGibbon — ghoul about town, trying to do the right thing, giving us another shot of 80’s zombies, finally. I had the pleasure of throwing a few questions Chris’ way and if we all play our cards right, we’ll be slipping The Video Dead right next to our copies of Humaniods From the Deep. Why? Because we can, and we’ll have Chris to thank for it.

Heather Buckley: When was the first time you watched The Video Dead?

Chris MacGibbon: I first »

Boos! and Whoop-doos!: Spooker Washington's Recession Era Trick 'r Treat Tips!

23 October 2009 8:56 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Trick or Treat? Whoop-doo!

The economy is in the shitter. That much is certain. What does that mean for Halloween? This year, it means you're going to get more Trick or Treaters than ever before. Parents will be sending their small ones on a grocery reconnaissance mission. Folks will be eating candy out of their plastic pumpkins for the entire month of November. Thanksgiving is going to be a bag full of Snickers and a couple loose Jolly Rancher side dishes. Yes, the Second Great Depression is upon us, and the only way families will make it through this Winter is if they take to the streets on October 31st in search of free candy.

But wait! You don't have enough money to fill an entire bone broke neighborhood full sweets. You're just as tired and thirsty as the next guy. Have you been to K-Mart lately? A bag of »

MST3K goes bite size with Rifftrax Shorts DVDs

23 October 2009 8:02 AM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Somehow, those little bite-sized Snickers and Milky Ways you got as Halloween Trick or Treat candy always seemed to taste better than the bigger ones you can snag in any store.

That's kind of the effect you get from watching a new pair of laugh-out-loud Shorts DVDs from Rifftrax -- Wide World of Shorts and Shorts-Tacular Shorts-Stravaganza.

The commentary of Mystery Science Theater 3000 alums Michael J. Nelson, Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy can usually make any movie funny. But, the riffs you buy off their website for major feature films can sometimes come with a cost.

For example, the problem with buying the riffs for Twilight or Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is you then have to sit there and watch Twilight or Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. That's a razor's edge trade-off for a few laughs.

Halloween and Horror Books Every Fan Should Own

18 October 2009 1:22 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Horror fans love this time of the year. For those of us not living in La, there's the chill in the air, the colorful leaves, pumpkins everywhere, dead cornfields to explore … if you dare. So, in honor of Our official holiday, I have come up with a list of books and some movies every horror fan should at least take a look at, if not outright add to your book or DVD library.

Without further ado (and in no particular order):

Creepy Places to Visit:

Creepy Crawls: A Horror Fiend’s Travel Guide by Leon Marcelo, Santa Monica Press, 380 pages

I Love this book!! Leon Marcelo travels the world, literally, to find places of horror both real and fictional. Rome to visit the Dario Argento Profondo Rosso Shop then to George Romero’s Pennsylvania and H.P. Lovecraft’s New England. Marcelo also covers Stephen King country, Poe’s Baltimore, »

Hall Of Horrors! A Conversation with Rob Hall Part I

15 October 2009 11:53 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

On the set of Alhambra, California's Powerman 5000 video 'Supervillain' , there's a green screen, special FX and a large crew. As Spider One gyrates before the screen, director Rob Hall leaps out of his directors chair and urges the singer to "Give it all ya got, man!"

Giving it all he's got is the ethos that Rob Hall lives by. Since his days as monster maker for Roger Corman all the way through Buffy and Angel, Hall's creatures were scarier, freakier and more creative than his big-budget competition. When he cuts loose on a movie, as he did with the rabid residents of Quarantine and his infected populace in the superb and disturbing remake of The Crazies, the results speak for themselves.

Not content at just being the next Rob Bottin, Hall also has a band with actor Hal Sparks and turned to directing. Besides his semi-autobiographical Lightning Bug, he »

King Diamond re-releases “The Graveyard” & “The Spider’S Lullabye” in time for Halloween!

15 October 2009 9:30 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Metal Blade records has just reissued 2 classic King Diamond albums, The Spider’S Lullybye and The Graveyard, remarkably re-mastered and featuring all new eerie artwork. Each album will include bonus material that fans will be able to obtain digitally. Both The Spider’S Lullabye and The Graveyard will include live “bootleg” versions (with video footage) of the following songs: “The Spider's Lullabye” from the album of the same name, and “Trick Or Treat” and “Up From The Grave” from The Graveyard.

King Diamond himself praises the reissued CDs claiming “Andy Larocque re-mastered both records and you can really hear more details and sounds that I remember recording but didn’t come through in the original mastering. The records have much more bottom end this time around. There’s even more details and clarity than the original version and you’ll hear things you’ve never heard before in both releases. »

Trick or Treat: Just in time for Halloween, those face-painting rockers Kiss are poised to have their first ever No. 1 album. Like Pearl Jam two weeks ago, Gene Simmons and the boys are looking pretty sweet to claim the top spot on the Billboard 200 next week with their self-released set that goes through a single retailer. (Pearl Jam’s “Backspacer” was a Target exclusive, with a few caveats;  Kiss is going through Wal-Mart.) “Sonic Boom” is a 3-disc set of new and classic Kiss, plus a DVD. Hits Daily Double predicts it will sell up to 160,000 copies, which... »

Lists of Doom Xxii: Jacob Lynam

If you have yet to hear of Lynam, consider yourself on notice, and let this be your baptism by fire.

Forged in the city of Birmingham, Alabama, the band has made a name for themselves via a pair of critically-acclaimed albums, the second of which will see a major reissue on August 18th courtesy of Mascot/Megaforce when Tragic City Symphony hit's retailers everywhere.

With the album getting the push it deserves, we thought this would be the perfect time to check in with frontman Jacob Lynam to talk a little horror. Welcome to the 22nd installment of Fangoria Musick's Lists Of Doom!

Taking a break from a relentless string of shows throughout the deep south, Jacob shared his thoughts on ten fright flicks that still strike fear into his guitar-wielding heart.

Kitamura body horror

21 July 2009 3:19 PM, PDT | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

With gore-soaked entries like Versus and Midnight Meat Train to his credit, director Ryuhei Kitamura obviously knows what to do with a chunky red mess. We heard the other day (via Styd) that Kitamura would delve into icky Cronenberg territory for some "body horror" with something called Teratoma. Now Moviehole got more gruesome details direct from the project producer Joel Soisson (Trick Or Treat, Feast). "I hatched the idea about a year and a half ago after watching a number... »

Soisson Interested in Trick or Treat Remake

11 June 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Joel Soisson, who was a producer on the 1986 horror pic Trick or Treat (not to be confused with Michael Dougherty's Trick 'r Treat ), tells Moviehole he would be interested in doing a remake. "I am actually kind of interested in a remake," Soisson said. "Problem is, like Bill and Ted which we made around the same time for DeLaurentiis Entertainment group, the rights have been sold and resold from that now defunct company to the point it would take the FBI to puzzle it out. But your reader has inspired me to try. Something in the headbanger's eternal struggle still resonates." The original starred Gene Simmons, Ozzy Osbourne, Marc Price, Tony Fields and Lisa Orgolini. »

Weekly Body Count: Heavy Metal Horror

2 June 2009 9:52 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

I'm not sure how the heavy metal and horror movie connection started but it's a match made in hell. The two go together like chocolate and peanut butter. It's a natural pairing. Alice Cooper had been combining Grand Guignol stage theatrics with live music since the 70's. Blue Oyster Cult wound horror and science fictions themes into their lyrics. Black Sabbath took their name from a Mario Bava movie yet the movies and the music maintained a safe distance from one another until heavy metal became the undisputed king of album sales in the mid to late 80's. The two seemed to officially become bed mates in 1986 with Friday the 13th Part 6 when the very same and this time very crazy Alice Cooper provided the synth happy track "He's back! (The Man Behind The Mask)" to the soundtrack. Before you knew it, Dokken was writing the theme song to my »
