Matthew Modine: Better Angels
By
Matthew Modine has been something of an iconoclast most of his working life. After being groomed for ‘80s teen idol status in early films such as Private School and Vision Quest, Modine was also one of the first actors of his generation, along with Sean Penn, to take on riskier projects, such as Robert Altman's Streamers, Alan Parker’s Birdy, Gillian Armstrong’s Mrs. Soffel, and Alan J. Pakula’s Orphans. It was his lead role as the cynical Marine Private Joker in Stanley Kubrick’s Vietnam epic Full Metal Jacket that put Modine into the pantheon of young actors who were more than just pretty faces and knowing winks at the camera. This, after all, was the young man who turned down the lead in Top Gun, arguably the prototypical ‘80s blockbuster, due to its cold war politics. From the beginning, »

Tony Scott is attached to direct a film about Somen “Steve” Banerjee, the founder of the male erotic dance club “Chippendales.”
The story will follow the rise of Banerjee from operating a gas station to owning a chain of night clubs worldwide, according to Variety. Chippendales’ massive success in the 80’s made him incredibly rich, but a series of lawsuits and increasing competition made him paranoid. In the early 90’s Banerjee was convicted of conspiracy and attempting to hire a hitman to knock off former choreographers and dancers. Banerjee ultimately committed suicide in his cell before sentencing.
Scott is attached to a multitude of projects, so this likely won’t be his next. He’s currently directing Unstoppable with Denzel Washington and Chris Pine. Looking at his list of possible movies, Scott may never get around to the rigorous research he’ll need to do for this movie.
Side note: Scott also directed Top Gun, »

Last week, I watched the film Patton again. For those of you who have not seen it, it is a biopic of General George Patton, who proudly proclaimed that he was going to use the guts of Germans to grease the treads of his tanks, after killing them "by the bushel". For him, an international conflict of the complexity and horror of World War II could easily be reduced to something about as serious as a particularly involving game of Space Invaders. It’s not hard to imagine him loving Dogfights. Though by all means a very instructive and engaging program, it is also a show that makes war seem like little more than a boy’s weekend adventure to airplane destruction camp.
Each episode in the two seasons of Dogfights (both of which are collected here) details a very specific battle, defined by two major characteristics: the setting (time »

Tony Scott is attached to direct a film about the rise and fall of Somen .Steve. Banerjee, the man who created Chippendales. He was eventually undone by excess and competition when the male strip clubs became a success in the 1980s. Scott is no stranger to 1980s/early 1990s excess as he directed "Top Gun," "Beverly Hills Cop II, " "Revenge, " "Days of Thunder, " and "The Last Boy Scout. " According to Variety, Scott and his Scott Free company will produce with David Permut's Permut Presentations and Firoz Nadiadwala. The script will be written by Lisa Schrager, who will adapt a manuscript written by Rodney Sheldon. The film is being financed from a private equity fund raised out of India by »

Remember back in the 1980s and the movies Tony Scott made? The Hunger, Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop 2? Whenever the sky was in a scene the guy loved to use a red filter on the top part of it. This new project of Tony Scott's sounds like it was made for that red filter effect.
Scott is now attached to direct a movie about the man who created the Chippendales male exotic dance group, Steve Banerjee. The movie will be set in the 1980s, so that red filter effect has to be in this picture! It just has to be!
The story will be written by Lisa Schrager and follow the rise and fall of Banerjee as he discovers the idea for the shirtless Chippendales, makes women scream in delight and becomes insanely wealthy in the process. Living the high life in '80s New York City and running with the Studio 54 crowd, »

John Woo's new World War II film Flying Tigers has been in the works for some time now. The fighter squadron story emerged last December when it was part of a trio of projects that Tom Cruise was circling. Since then John Woo announced that he was making the Christopher McQuarrie and Mason Alley scripted picture his next project, but there's been no further updates. Now that all changes in a packed story from Variety about New Regency's upcoming projects, we almost missed the brief mention that Tom Cruise is attached to Flying Tigers, marking his grand return to the cockpit for the first time since 1986's Top Gun. ComingSoon also caught up with Woo recently and here's what he had to say about Flying Tigers: "It's based on a true story in WWII, about a group of American volunteer fighter pilots who worked with the Chinese Air »

Tom Cruise is a raging psychopath.
American Psycho director Mary Harron says that Christian Bale, who played the yuppie killer Patrick Bateman in the film, based his performance on Tom Cruise.
In an interview with Black Book magazine, Harron stated that Bale was “trying to work out the right way to behave.”
Nothing says “acting right” like Tom Cruise.
“We talked about how Martian-like Patrick Bateman was, how he was looking at the world like somebody from another planet [and] watching what people did,” Harron says. “And then one day [Christian] called me and he had been watching Tom Cruise on David Letterman, and he just had this very intense friendliness with nothing behind the eyes, and he was really taken with this energy.”
In 2005, Cruise fired his publicist, Lee Anne DeVette, who is also his sister, and replaced her with one of H-town’s veteran PR men, Paul Bloch. The Top Gun »

Bronson Pinchot has insisted that his recent comments about Tom Cruise's alleged homophobia were not a joke. The former Perfect Strangers star claimed in an interview that Cruise had made "constant unrelated homophobic comments" on the set of 1983 film Risky Business. A representative for the Top Gun actor said that Pinchot's remarks must have been made in "jest". However, Pinchot told the Wall Street Journal that he had "never been quite so forthcoming" as he was in the article, in which he labeled Cruise a "bore". He said: "In the same spirit of letting-it-all-hang out, I mentioned less-than-admirable aspects of various (more) »

Tom Cruise's publicist has responded promptly to allegations the movie star is a "homophobic bore" - made by a former castmate.
Actor Bronson Pinchot attempted to expose the real Cruise in a recent interview, claiming his Risky Business co-star made a series of offensive anti-gay comments on the set of the 1983 film that upset co-stars.
Pinchot reveals, "He (Cruise) was the biggest bore on the face of the Earth.
"He made constant, constant unrelated homophobic comments... There was no basis for it. It was like, 'It's a nice day, I'm glad there are no gay people standing here.' Very, very strange.
"If someone's 20 years old and every third line out of their mouth is anti-something specific, then draw your own conclusion."
But the Top Gun star's publicist, Cheryl Maisel, insists Pinchot simply failed to get a joke.
She tells TV Guide magazine, "Obviously this is so far removed from who Tom Cruise is as a person, this must have been said in jest."
And Pinchot doesn't stop at criticising Cruise - he also describes Denzel Washington as "one of the most unpleasant human beings I've ever met in my life." »

Katie Holmes has hailed husband Tom Cruise her favourite fashion critic, because he can criticise the actress' clothing choices without hurting her feelings.
Holmes insists the pair shares a passion for fashion and almost always agree on her costume picks, and, even when they don't, the Top Gun star is skilled at letting her down gently.
The actress tells Elle magazine, "Tom has great taste. He usually likes everything, but sometimes I'll walk out and he'll say, 'I think that dress might be wearing you. You don't need that.'" »
