Movies are the Best Medicine

8 November 2009 6:01 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

One of best things about movies is that they have a powerful ability to affect us on many levels, and we each have our own personal experiences where a movie has lifted our spirits.

This is a one of those stories from Paul Collett, a good friend of the site, on how Michael J. Fox, Luke Skywalker and Buzz Lightyear once teamed up to help him through a tough time.

About a year ago I had a week off work with some kind of virus which meant I couldn’t or perhaps shouldn’t leave the house, and as the boredom set in the inevitable search through the DVD collection started. To my delight I found Teen Wolf, a present bought for me one Christmas from my best bud Jon (you may know him if you’re regulars to the site), I watched it and utterly enjoyed it, despite the »

Guttenberg Wants ‘3 Men and a Bride’

5 November 2009 6:06 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Steve Guttenberg is claiming he’s set to reunite with Ted Danson and Tom Selleck for 3 Men and a Bride, the potentially third movie in the 3 Men in a Baby series.

The 51-year-old actor’s last big movie was probably 3 Men and a Little Lady in 1990, so prepare your giant grain of salt.  Guttenberg told the WENN that “Disney is developing” this and “they’re bringing everybody back.”  He also predicted it will be a “smash hit,” as if audiences are combing their VHS collections and wondering what happen to little Mary Bennington.

Guttenberg didn’t offer any additional details, but presumably the story would pick back up with the three bachelors attending Mary’s wedding for a father(s) of the bride moment.

What about the other 80’s hits?  Guttenberg has you covered.  He wants to return to the Police Academy, make another Cocoon, and he’d like a »

Guttenberg, Danson and Selleck = 'Three Men and a Bride'

4 November 2009 4:45 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

We are now in the age of the 20-year-old sequel. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Wall Street 2, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Beverly Hills Hop 4, The Untouchables: Capone Rising. It hasn't been "too long," it isn't awkward to go back. It'll make you feel young again! Now we've reached the pinnacle of past grabs, as WENN is reporting that Steve Guttenberg, Tom Selleck, and Ted Danson are reuniting for Three Men and a Bride.

"Disney's developing Three Men and a Bride. That's going to be a smash. A smash hit. They're bringing everybody back for that," says Guttenberg. "Nobody knows about it. I'm the first to talk about it."

Guttenberg might just become king of the It's Never To Late To Return! movement, as he dreams of reviving all of his past franchises. "It's definitely time for another Police Academy. And I think they could make another Cocoon. »

Guttenberg's New Role Is Close To Home

4 November 2009 4:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Steve Guttenberg will poke fun at his status as an '80s icon in his latest movie role.

The actor was king of the box office during the 1980s, starring in four major movie franchises; Three Men and a Baby, Police Academy, Cocoon and Short Circuit.

He has since been forced to reinvent himself to stay in the spotlight, appearing on reality show Dancing with the Stars and even embarking on a new career as a stand-up comedian.

In his latest role, in romantic drama It's Not You, the 51 year old plays an ad executive who is forced to reinvent himself after struggling to live up to the success he enjoyed earlier in his career.

And Guttenberg admits there are parallels between his life and that of his character Nate Shepherd.

The actor tells WENN, "It's about a man who reinvents himself. Everyone has to reinvent themselves to stay in the game, whether you're Madonna or Paul McCartney."

Morris S. Levy, the movie's producer, adds, "It sort of mirrors Steve Guttenberg's life as an actor. The writer/director (Allie Dvorin) actually changed a lot of the material, to make (Nate Shepherd) more of the '80s character that Steve was.

"In the opening scene we find out that he came up with one of the most famous catchphrases of the 80s, but he gets fired in the (film) because he's behind the times.

Levy is hoping It's Not You is a big box office hit and kickstarts Guttenberg's career - in the same way The Wrestler turned Mickey Rourke from a has-been into a Golden Globe winner.

Levy says, "People forget, Steve was in six films in the 1980s that made over $100 million. When ticket prices were $2.50. That's $200 million, $300 million films now.

"How many actors have done that? And he's still young.

"With Mickey Rourke coming back in the Wrestler.... And I don't think Mickey Rourke was a beloved character. So we have a shot at that." »

Fisher Stevens to Recur on Ugly Betty

2 November 2009 12:23 PM, PST | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Fisher Stevens is moving in to Ugly Betty. Literally!

The actor - most recently known for his run as George Minkowski on Lost; but forever known for his role in the movie Short Circuit - will play Mr. Z on the series, Betty's new landlord.

In casting the character, Ugly Betty producers said they looking for a “New York actor who could go head-to-head with America Ferrera." We think they've found him.

'Ugly Betty' scoop: Fisher Stevens is Betty's new (spoiler alert)!

Is Betty leaving the nest again? Looks that way judging by the following casting scoop... Sources confirm to me exclusively that Fisher Stevens is joining Ugly Betty in the potentially recurring role of Mr. Z., Betty's dry, sarcastic new landlord. In casting the part, Betty producers were looking for a "New York actor who could go head-to-head with America Ferrera." I'd say the Short Circuit/Early Edition/Numb3rs thesp fits the bill. Hardware (DVD/Blu-ray Review)

30 October 2009 12:39 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

“This is what you want…this is what you get…this is what you want…this is what you get…” Public Image Ltd. chants under the end credits of Richard Stanley’s Hardware. If what you’ve been wanting for the last decade is a worthy disc release of the 1990 sci-fi shocker, what you get from Severin Films’ recently issued two-dvd set and Blu-ray is everything you could imagine, and a few things you probably couldn’t.

First and foremost is a fine 1.85:1 transfer that holds the hyperstylized, vibrantly hued visual scheme (described by Stanley amongst the extras as “rock ’n’ roll lighting”) extremely well, with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio that’s equally aggressive. Stanley’s command of sound and image elevates Hardware above a basic storyline that he freely admits is derivative of any number of past genre films, citing everything from spaghetti Westerns and classic science fiction literature »

'Hellraiser' Remake Also Coming in Unnecessary 3-D

28 October 2009 5:01 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Yesterday, we told you about a new Short Circuit that Dimension Films is making. Dimension is doing the drive-thru window thing these days by propping up revisions of Hellraiser, An American Werewolf in London, Scanners, and Piranha, as well as the Halloween flicks and Scream 4. That's not all the studio is cooking up, but it's a major thrust for Weinstein Lite.

And here's more good news, he said facetiously, like pretty much everything else he says: The twisting-in-the-wind Hellraiser remake will be in 3-D. I know: How inventive. Bloody Disgusting has the official word, but there's no official word as to why it'll be 3-D. I love the idea of the original Hellraiser more than the movie, and because it's an idea they got wrong in the 80s, a remake is appropriate. But we don't need the gimmick of the extra Dimension dimension. »

Hellraiser Remake Coming at You in 3D

27 October 2009 4:39 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Despite the company ailing a bit, The Weinstein Co. is still busy readying projects for release next year. Among them are lots of hot horror properties including Scream 4 and remakes of Clive Barker's Hellraiser, Scanners, and An American Werewolf in London. Yes, we've reported on all these before so why bring them up again? Well, it came to light today that the Hellraiser remake will be coming at us in 3D. That's why!

The news came buried in the last paragraph of a completely unrelated story on Variety about the damned Short Circuit remake of all things. Many directors have circled the project, but none has officially signed on. Will this new dimension nab someone cool? We shall see.

Who knows? Maybe the Cenobites' proposed "such sights to show [us]" can be a bit more visceral as they're flying off the screen. Stay tuned!

Pinhead Confirmed to Be Returning in 3D

27 October 2009 4:15 PM, PDT | bloody-disgusting.com | See recent Bloody-Disgusting.com news »

In a new article over at Variety regarding the Short Circuit remake, they confirm old news that Dimension Films' remake of Hellraiser will in fact be filmed in 3-D. They also report that the full title is Clive Barker's Hellraiser, and also bring Scanners back into conversation. Scanners is in development hell after David Goyer penned the last draft. The Hellraiser reboot has already seen its fair share of directors (Alexandre Bustillo, Julien Maury, Pascal Laugier) attached to bring Pinhead back to the big screen. Dimension Films is also developing Scream 4 and a remake of John Landis' classic An American Werewolf in London. »

Short Circuit Remake Gets a Director

27 October 2009 4:10 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

News has come out today on Variety that the Dimension Films remake of Short Circuit is set to be directed by Steve Carr who has most recently directed Mall Cop! The 1986 version of Short Circuit starred Steve Guttenberg, Ally Sheedy and G.W. Bailey as the mean army dude trying to destroy Johnny 5 even though he was aliiiiiiive!

Variety: Scripted by Dan Milano (”Robot Chicken”), the remake is a robot reboot that brings the iconic Johnny 5 into the 21st century. Built by the military to be a highly sophisticated weapon, Johnny 5 develops a conscience and personality after being hit by lightning. He befriends a lonely boy and his fractured family.

David Foster and Ryan E. Heppe of David Foster Productions will produce with John Hyde of Rehab Entertainment. Jason Taragan, who partners with Carr in Rumpus Entertainment, will be exec producer.

Mall Cop Director to Remake ‘Short Circuit’

27 October 2009 1:21 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Steve Carr, the genius director behind Paul Blart: Mall Cop, has signed to remake the 1986 comedy Short Circuit for Dimension Films.  The screenplay was written by Dan Milano, creator of the show “Greg the Bunny” and a writer for the Emmy Award-winning series “Robot Chicken.”

When the remake was announced in April 2008, Dimension was planning a modern version of the wise-cracking Number 5 robot that came to life after being struck by lightning.  Oh, and the producer thought Wall-e was a rip off of Short Circuit.

Now Number 5 is a lovable robot made of advanced technology that “befriends a lonely boy and his fractured family,” according to the Variety announcement.  Hopefully this mechanied, huggable hero will bring everyone together again!

Well, that killed any chance of this being a worthy redo.  Milano may write for an extremely funny show, but his script will be turned to family-friendly mush by the time »

"Short Circuit" to be Remade by "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" Director!

27 October 2009 12:12 PM, PDT | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

Steve Carr, the director who gave us the Kevin James hit "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" has been hired by Dimension films to remake the 1986 sci-fi film, "Short Circuit."

They're calling this a robot reboot and will bing Johnny 5 into the 21st century. If you remember, the film is about Number 5, one of a group of experimental military robots, who develops self-awareness after being struck by lightning.

The remake's script is written by Dan Milano from "Robot Chicken."

The original 1986 "Short Circuit" film starring Ally Sheedy and Steve Guttenberg was cute, but the one that I remember the most was El Debarge's hit song "Who's Johnny." Do you remember this video?

'Paul Blart: Mall Cop' Helmer Tackling 'Short Circuit' Remake

27 October 2009 11:48 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Considering several, if not most, movie bloggers are all of the same generation I am assuming a lot are like me and grew up watching the 1986 sci-fi classic Short Circuit. However, while I enjoyed the film, I don't think I will be falling in line and getting all that upset about the remake Dimension Films is putting together.

It was announced back in June that Dan Milano ("Robot Chicken") would be scripting the film as original producer David Foster told Variety, "We're bringing Number 5 into the 21st Century and taking advantage of the improvements in robotics that are so massive that robots are now performing heart surgeries in hospitals."

It seems Milano did his job as Variety now informs us Steve Carr, director of Paul Blart: Mall Cop, will direct the new Short Circuit for the studio, but there is no word on when production will begin.

‘Paul Blart’ Director Helming Short Circuit Remake

27 October 2009 10:03 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Early this summer, we announced that Dimension Films was in the process of giving Johnny 5 a remake-over with a new Short Circuit film. They just about had all of the pre-production people in place to make it happen; all they needed was a director. Dan Milano (Greg the Bunny) was putting together the script; David Foster, who produced the original, was returning to produce the remake and joining him were Ryan E. Heppe and John Hyde. So where did Dimension Films go to find a director? Where everyone else goes when they need to find something, of course - the mall.

Steve Carr, who directed 2009 surprise hit Paul Blart: Mall Cop, has been chosen to direct the Short Circuit remake and that just means one thing - a embarrassingly, unfunny actor will surely be cast as the male lead. What brings me to that conclusion? I’m glad you asked… »

'Short Circuit' Remake Taps 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop' Director Steve Carr To Keep Johnny Five Alive

27 October 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

The Hollywood reboot machine continues its full-fledged steamrolling over my fondest childhood memories, this time in the form of a "Short Circuit" remake.

Variety reports that the film — already announced with "Greg the Bunny" creator Dan Milano working on the screenplay — will be directed by Steve Carr, who recently helmed the Kevin James-starring "Paul Blart: Mall Cop."

The original "Short Circuit" starred the always delightful Steve Guttenberg and the frequently terrifying Fisher Stevens as Newton Crosby and Ben Jabituya, a pair of scientists that create an intelligent (and adorable) robot named Johnny Five.

After escaping from the military compound on which he is built, Johnny Five embarks on a journey of self-discovery filled with all the hilarity you'd expect from a Guttenberg-starring '80s feel-good comedy.

The previous news of Milano's attachment as the screenwriter behind "Short Circuit" struck an odd note given the writer's typically lewd creative material, »

Paul Blart Director Remaking Short Circuit

27 October 2009 7:22 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Remember at the beginning of the year, when Paul Blart: Mall Cop was a sign of everything that was wrong with American filmmaking and the taste of moviegoers? It was such an innocent time before Transformers 2, wasn't it? Anyway, Carr has escaped the label of "Director Most Hurting America" this year, and he's trading in that "credibility" to make us all hate him again. Yes, he's directing the Short Circuit remake. Prepare the pitchforks. According to Variety, the remake plans to bring lovable robot Johnny 5 "into the 21st century." Yeah, I can hear you children of the 80s banging your heads into the walls from here. The article also mentions a handful of other remakes and sequels in development at Dimension, including Hellraiser and Spy Kids 4, that I did not know were in the works.
