Taking Woodstock and cinema's love of trippy scenes | Anne Billson

There are plenty of trippy movie scenes – but watching them sober makes you feel like the designated driver in a roomful of drunks

Thirty-six years ago, I dropped a tab of Lsd. It was Ok, but I never felt the urge to do it again, and never thought much about it – until the other day, when I was watching Taking Woodstock. To the sound of Love's The Red Telephone, Ang Lee serves up an acid trip so uncannily spot-on, I swear it gave me my first ever flashback.

It's not as though there's ever been a shortage of trippy scenes in films. It's just they always seemed to chime more with the experiences of the film-makers than with my own. Indeed, watching them sober, you often feel like the designated driver in a roomful of babbling drunks. In the aptly-named The Trip, Peter Fonda has a psychedelic experience in which, »

Veteran's Day Honored, Hollywood-Style

11 November 2009 9:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Today is Veteran's Day. It is a time when we step back for a moment to honor the bravery and sacrifices of our nation's soldiers. Men and women who give everything, up to and including their lives, all in the name of protecting this country and all that it represents. Also known as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day in other parts of the world, the holiday always falls on November 11, commemorating the anniversary of the 1918 armistice that brought an end to World War I.

The history of film is rife with stories pulled straight from the front lines. War stories make great cinema, both because they serve up gripping tales of heroism and because they honor those who take on such acts in the real world. So today, in honor of the veterans from wars past and wars ongoing, we give you this small selection of classics to spend some time with. »

[DVD Review] Natural Born Killers: The Director’s Cut

29 October 2009 2:00 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Natural Born Killers is the black sheep of the Oliver Stone filmography. Though it has received some critical acclaim, it has never received the same treatment as Stone’s more prestigious films like Platoon, Born on The Fourth of July and JFK. This comes from a host of factors. First, at the time of its release, the movie ironically became the primary target for a movement against violence in television and film. Second, and more importantly, it doesn’t really feel like an Oliver Stone film. Stone’s films are typically epic and historic, larger than life in their content and the lessons they teach. Nbk is larger than life too, but in a very different way. It attacks our sensibility about culture and the way we sense things. It tests our understanding of good and evil by proposing that no one is good.

Tony Todd Talks Splatter

Conducted by Phil Fasso and Mike Cucinotta on October 26, 2009

So we're sitting here in The Frightquarters waiting for Tony Todd to report in. We interviewing him via telephone so no need to repeat his name five times. We tried it, it didn't work. (Ok, ok... we only got to 4 and turned the lights on.)

A funny thing pops up on our telescreen: An old doc on 'Bride of Frankestein', hosted by Joe Dante, starring Clive Barker and featuring Bill Condon, all of whom have worked with Todd. Barker and Condon having been involved in 'Candyman' and 'Candyman: Farewell To The Flesh', and Dante having recently directed him in 'Splatter', a new 3 episode web series, produced by Roger Corman and debuting exclusively for free on Netflix on October 29th.

Interview: Willem Dafoe on Lars von Trier’s Controversial ‘Antichrist’

21 October 2009 3:32 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The legendary Willem Dafoe, star of modern classics like “Platoon” and “Shadow of the Vampire,” is still one of the hardest working men in Hollywood. He has two films opening this week, a cameo role in “Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant” and a lead in the controversial “Antichrist,” which he brought to the 45th Chicago International Film Festival and took time for an interview with HollywoodChicago.com.

Lars von Trier’s “Antichrist” has been stirring up controversy since it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. With graphic violence, nudity, and themes not often seen in movies, “Antichrist” has been polarizing audiences. One thing commonly agreed upon is the quality of the performances at the center of the piece. Gainsbourg won an acting award at Cannes and Dafoe has been receiving unanimous praise.

Christopher Nolan’s ‘Inception’ Headed for IMAX

2 October 2009 4:27 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Since Christopher Nolan’s upcoming sci-fi film, Inception, premiered its teaser trailer in August, news and footage from the film have been rolling out steadily.

Today, we got word that Inception would receive a dual release in both standard 35mm and in IMAX. Check out the full text of the press release from the IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. below for the details and our thoughts.

IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that Inception, directed by Christopher Nolan (”The Dark Knight”) and starring multiple Oscar(R) nominee Leonardo DiCaprio (”Blood Diamond,” “The Aviator”), will be released to IMAX(R) theatres simultaneously with the film’s wide release in conventional theatres on July 16, 2010. The film marks the third IMAX project for Christopher Nolan, following the record-breaking IMAX release of “The Dark Knight,” which grossed more than $65 million at IMAX theatres. Christopher Nolan’s Inception Will be Shown in IMAX. But it Wasn’t Shot in IMAX. Fuck.

1 October 2009 1:59 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

IMAX has just announced that Christopher Nolan’s latest film “Inception” will be released next year in IMAX. Great news, right? Unfortunately, the news could be better and here’s why: since the film was shot using conventional 35mm cameras and not using the actual IMAX cameras, the IMAX release is going to be using the IMAX Dmr technology to blow up the image to fill the screen. So while it’ll still look good, it won’t be the oh my god quality that was “The Dark Knight”. Look, I’m still extremely excited to see “Inception” in IMAX, I just wish at least part of it was shot using real IMAX cameras. Anyway, we’ve been sent a press release and it’s after the jump. It’s filled with the usual stuff that says how excited everyone is to be working together.

Before There Were Websites... (Pt 2)

10 September 2009 7:10 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

...there were scrapbooks (prev. pt 1)

Let's continue that silly reveal of my "Movies of the Eighties" scrapbook. I'm still hoping to locate the "Movie Stars of the Eighties" companion volume in which I ranked all the actors and actresses of the decade. Wouldn't that be a Rotfl experience? If I can find it I will share, despite the loss of dignity it will surely occasion.

Behold! To your left is the tv guide cover that started it all. I guess it wasn't an actual TV Guide as my personal mythology has always relayed but whatever television magazine thingie was inserted into the Detroit Free Press back in the day. That cover right there started my whole Oscar obsession -- look how worn, damaged and fingered it is. I thumbed through it so many times. What is this naked gold man they call Oscar??? This cover unlocked my latent awards mania. »

'The Princess Of The Frog' Villain Revealed, Looks And Sounds Suspiciously Like Keith David

25 August 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

There are plenty of reasons why I’m looking forward to Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog.” For one, I’m excited to see if the Mouse House can successfully revive hand-drawn animated features that Pixar mastermind John Lasseter is overseeing things. For another, I love New Orleans, especially its musical heritage, and I’m anxious to see the setting fully recreated by Disney animators. And now, thanks to a video hosted by Cartoon Brew, I’m also eager to see more of the film’s villain, Dr. Faciler.

As you can see in the behind-the-scenes clip, Faciler is voiced by and very much resembles Keith David, an underrated character actor who you may recognize from such films as “Platoon,” “They Live,” "Clockers," “Barbershop” and “Requiem for a Dream.” And if you don’t know him by face, you probably know his deep signature voice, which has been heard in tons of documentaries, »

Oliver Stone to show us the Secret History of America

19 August 2009 12:47 PM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

While he started off as a screenwriter of some hit-or-miss movies (try watching 1981's The Hand sober and you'll soon know what I mean), Oliver Stone remade his professional persona by writing and directing one of the biggest critical successes of the 1980s, the Oscar-winning Best Picture Platoon. Ever since Stone hasn't shied away from rocking the boat and making films which showed us the way he views America and its political landscape. JFK, Born on the Fourth of July, Nixon, Wall Street and World Trade Center all deal with real life people or events that still create uncomfortable ripples in the psyche of many Americans.

Now Stone is turning his attention to the platform of television and creating a 10-part documentary series for Showtime that will examine the Secret History of America. In addition to producing the series Stone will also narrate each episode as it examines culturally important »

Dafoe Joins 'John Carter of Mars'

15 July 2009 9:10 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

It looks like Willem Dafoe has another potential movie franchise.

The versatile actor, who played the Green Goblin in the 'Spider-Man' movies, has signed on for the upcoming John Carter of Mars. Variety reports Dafoe will play the fierce Martian warrior Tars Tarkas, who proves to be a valuable ally of Virginian-turned-space adventurer John Carter.

Tarkas is described as being unusual among his warlike race due to his ability to feel love. The character fights along Carter throughout Edgar Rice Burroughs’ series of science-fiction novels, so if the first John Carter of Mars movie takes off, one assumes Dafoe would appear in the sequels as well.

John Carter of Mars, a Walt Disney Pictures film, is to be directed by Wall-e and Finding Nemo helmer Andrew Stanton. The script is adapted by Mark Andrews and Stanton from Burroughs' novel "A Princess of Mars". Casting so far includes Taylor Kitsch as Carter, »

(Ari Folman, above, as the on-screen version of himself, in Waltz With Bashir.)

Our Waltz With Bashir Interview with the Oscar-nominated director, on the occasion of the film's release on DVD.

by Terry Keefe

“So, Terry, what is it you want to ask me?” queried Israeli film director Ari Folman, and there was exhaustion in his voice. It was on the Friday before Oscar Weekend, back in February, that I met Folman and he was understandably weary after having logged long hours on the vigorous awards campaign trail for his film Waltz With Bashir, regarded by many for months prior as the front-runner for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. When we had our talk, the ballots had long since been cast, but Folman still hadn’t tired of speaking about Bashir, physically worn out though he likely was. The Oscar ended up going to the Japanese entry, Departures, but »

Anton Chigurh Stalks Wall Street In Oliver Stone Sequel

2 June 2009 9:32 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The adorable Nikki Finke is reporting that Javier Bardem has joined the cast of Oliver Stone's Wall Street sequel.  He'll be playing the film's villain against Shia Labeouf and Michael Douglas.  Finke also got her mitts on a more detailed plot synopsis. Labeouf plays a young Wall Street trader whose stockbroker mentor kills himself.  He blames a hedge fund manager (Bardem) responsible for major stock shorting in his mentor's death and seeks the help of a disgraced Gordon Gekko (Douglas) in getting revenge.  Gekko is fresh out of prison after serving time for his escapades in the first film, and he now sits on the fringe of the financial community.  The additional kink in the mix is that Labeouf is engaged to Gekko's estranged daughter.  The film reportedly spans from June 2008 through the recent Federal bailout and has a reformed Gekko warning the establishment that the market is about to crash. Watch out, Mickey Rourke: Indie Spirit is Oscar's consolation prize

21 February 2009 1:43 PM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

The Independent Spirit award is supposed to salute what past ceremony host Samuel L. Jackson once called "the strange, the weird, the eclectic, the visionary, the new blood." Ideally, its purpose is to help those low-profile quality films that could use a boost so that someday, maybe, the filmmakers and performers could compete in the big league of the Oscars.

And back when the Spirits took flight, they tried hard to keep to that mission. Indeed, its first best-picture winner in 1985, "After Hours," wasn't nominated for a single Oscar. But then "Platoon" won best pic at both the Spirits and the Oscars the next year. From then on, the Spirits focused more and more on seemingly academy-friendly films, with a corresponding increase in its own profile. While 1987 best-pic winner "River's Edge" was snubbed at the Oscars, other early champs made it into Oscar categories like screenplay ("sex, lies and videotape, »
