Tonight sees the new adaptation of John Wyndham's novel The Day Of The Triffids begin on BBC1, with the concluding part tomorrow.
And with not so much as the hint of a tendril in the publicity shots, sci-fi fans have been wondering what the latest incarnation of the fictional flora will look like.
Triffids are probably the most well-known venomous vegetation on the big or small screen but far from the only example. So, with the Triffids about to wield their deadly stingers once again, it's time to take a look at the top horticultural horrors.
Please note that the following list will include fungi which were previously considered to be plants but are now classified in their own kingdom separate from animals, plants and bacteria. In fact, genetic studies have shown fungi to be more closely related to animals than plants. Nevertheless, mushrooms are grown as crops and eaten as vegetables, »

The unnecessary and unwanted remake of the great 2007 British Comedy Death at a Funeral is coming out in a matter of months and the first official trailer for the movie was recently released online.
Frank Oz directed the British version which starred Matthew Macfadyen (Pride & Prejudice, Frost/Nixon) as the main character. This remake, or re-enactment as I would call it, is brought to us by (and stars) Chris Rock.
In an age when moviegoers are drowning in remakes, reboots and re-imaginings of established properties and brands, this movie sadly only comes partially as a surprise -- the project began less than a year after the UK version released. That being said, there are remakes, and then there are complete copies. Check out the trailer below.
This version of Death at a Funeral stars Chris Rock, Zoe Saldana, Danny Glover, James Marsden, Luke Wilson, Martin Lawrence, Peter Dinklage, Tracy Morgan and Ron Glass. »

Even Roger Corman admits that his name was unlikely to be associated with an Academy Award. Yet the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has decided to give Corman an honorary lifetime achievement Oscar, nonetheless. Corman told The Associated Press that he was surprised by the announcement.
I predicted that I would not win because I make low-budget films, and I felt the Academy would not give an award to someone who made low-budget films. I was truly surprised when I got the call.
Corman began his career producing and directing low-budget fare like 1955's Swamp Women and Monsters from the Ocean Floor, Corman quickly found that what he did best was provide opportunities to young director and actors like Martin Scorsese (1972's Boxcar Bertha), Jack Nicholson (1960's Little Shop of Horrors), Robert De Niro (1970's Bloody Mama), Francis Ford Coppola (Dementia 13), and Ron Howard (1977's Grand Theft Auto »

He gave life to teenage cavemen and candy-stripe nurses. Crab monsters and humanoids from the deep. T-bird gangs and towns that dreaded sundown. His name is Roger Corman. And on Nov. 14, he will receive an honor that no one would have predicted: an honorary Academy Award. The 83-year-old B-movie titan has made nearly 400 films as a director and producer. From the start, Corman was a magnet for hungry young actors, writers, and directors who would work for slave wages for the chance to make their first film. They called it the "University of Corman," and the alumni include Francis Ford Coppola, »

There may be an absence of news on a third Batman movie but there's no shortage of casting suggestions and fan debate over who and what should be in it.
Whether any of it comes true is another matter, but it's interesting - and fun - to speculate and make those wishlists for the possible next instalment.
I recently reported that Marion Cotillard was a top choice to play Catwoman in the superhero fan community.
Among other villains' names being thrown around is Poison Ivy, previously portrayed by Uma Thurman (pictured right) in 1997's Batman & Robin.
It seems fairly unlikely that director Nolan would use the character in his third Batman movie but, nevertheless, fans are pondering possible actresses to play the part.
While Eva Green leads one forum poll, followed by Scarlett Johansson, another name put forward is Rachel Nichols.
Nichols, a 29-year-old natural blonde, dyed her hair to »

Is it only fitting that Oral Fixation (now out on DVD from LifeSize) sucks? This isn’t even a horror flick—it’s a thriller with no bite, a bland, boring and badly acted low-budget Fatal Attraction clone that quickly grows long in the tooth. Ok, that’s enough bad mouth jokes; I’m truly and sincerely sorry, but for some reason this movie set my teeth on edge. Perhaps I was predetermined to dislike this film because of my own oral fixations—I talk too much, eat all the time, overindulge in sugar and am constantly chewing on my nails. I blame my mom. But enough about my psychological issues—let me give you a lesson in Oral history.

Anyone in America can instantly watch the Webisodes at www.netflix.com/splatter. In a plot twist, Mr. Corman, making his Internet video debut at age 83, is opening up the creative direction of the series by asking the public to vote on the fate of its characters.

We learned yesterday that Netflix is partnering with legendary low-budget filmmaker Roger Corman to produce online miniseries Splatter. And viewers get to vote on which characters live or die on the episodes, which premiere Oct. 29, Nov. 6, and, Nov. 13.
The mystery left unanswered in the news is where Netflix is going with all of this.
But the company tells us this is not a harbinger of its filmmaking future, nor is it a signal that the movies-on-demand company is pushing aggressively into social networking. It's more like a marketing push. "I wouldn't say this would signal anything that's radically different from the Netflix model that we have now," says Netflix vice president of corporate communications Steve Swaysey. "We are a great film distributor. That's what our goal is going to continue to be." Besides, he added, "There are others that would do social marketing better than we would ever be able to. »

Where The Wild Things Are wasn.t particularly vital to my childhood. I knew of it, but it wasn.t like Dr. Seuss. It seemed like fresh material for a movie along the lines of my childhood favorites, mostly Labyrinth and its cohorts The Neverending Story and Little Shop of Horrors. Now that I put that in writing, I had some pretty progressive tastes for a 10-year-old. I mean, a rock star romancing a teenager and a plant that eats people?
Review: Where the Wild Things
My point is, Where the Wild Things Are has its similarities with the type of children.s fantasies from before they lost their charm thanks to CGI effects. It.s not one of those though. This is not a happy fantasy. It.s very somber. Melancholy permeates even the most fun scenes. That.s powerful stuff for a 31-year-old to take. I don.t »

Netflix, which started as a simple "DVD delivery to your home" service and has grown to delivering movies straight to computer and Xbox is now about to tackle the world of web content. Review in a Hurry: A girl-driven horror flick featuring a hypnotic performance by Megan Fox and the wicked dark smarts of writer Diablo Cody, Jennifer's Body aims to be a cult classic, and should be crowned as one. The Bigger Picture: Jennifer's Body gleefully jumps over gapping plot holes and shoves characters into implausible situations—but no matter! Everyone here is having way too much fun to care. The movie has the darkness of Heathers, the edginess of Mean Girls and the absurd gore of Little Shop of Horrors. In other words, it's tailor-made for screenings at midnight and slumber parties. Here, Jennifer is the Megan Fox of her high school: an envied, desired sex kitten. Her bestie is a bookish, »

Former Emmerdale star Richard Grieve has started fronting a new Friends of the Earth advertising campaign. The short film sees Grieve taking on the role of a politician who is confronted by a group of singing cows in desperate need of home-grown food. As the story continues, the animals convince Grieve's character to change his mindset by performing their own version of Little Shop Of Horrors number 'Feed Me'. Speaking of his new role, the soap star commented: "I was shocked to find out that producing meat and dairy (more) »
