The kernel of this film, glizty "big" versus human "little," drives everything on the screen. The intimacy of Giulietta and Marcello, a gently wistful sense of lost opportunity mixed with whimsical self-deprecation, is buffeted by eruptions of Fellini's well-known excess. But that's all to the point, on one level exactly how these two has-beens must feel, forgotten long since by a world gone mad. On another, it is Fellini's grasp of his own artistic paradox, that war between content and surface always raging in his films. Its quiet moments, always two-scenes between the stars, anchor its message firmly in their hopeful battered yet still-beautiful smiles. The final scene, the train station farewell with its last bittersweet hope under a silent cope of surreal "commercial" imagery, is one of Fellini's most affecting. No mistakes here, folks!
