Kiefer Sutherland, when not playing the slick villain that he was in Stand By Me or the Lost Boys, he was always playing these awkward shy polite guys that was just a little too wierd to enjoy (see Promised Land, 1969, and Brotherhood of Justice). I had a feeling that this was going to be just that. And it was.
So Sutherland plays Brookes, a strange teen shunned by his rich family due to his eccentric behaviors (he never really socializes with anyone or shows much emotion or does anything really considered "normal") and probably done because his family shuns him. His parents ignore him (they are hardly in the film) and his brother is quite vindictive, blaming Brookes for messing up the family life, saying he does what he does for attention.
Then, Brookes meets a lovely deaf girl and falls in love, happy to find someone just as "different" as she. She actually helps him to loosen up (though not much). On the box, the video store equated the film with Children of a Lesser God, and I suppose that it is a lighter, funnier version (though most of the movie made me mad given that Brookes exhibits little emotion and that's tuff to watch). It's comparable to Children of a Lesser God because a strange fellow meets a deaf girl who helps him out with his own emotional struggles. It's not as deep and dramatic, however.
I couldn't say that I liked this movie, with the exception that it got better towards the end once the main characters broke out of their annoying bubbles of solitude to show some depth.
