Avatar TV Spot 3 = Fantasy Adventure For Kids?

10 November 2009 12:45 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Back August I was one of those thousands of people who packed into movie theaters for “Avatar Day”, an event which provided the opportunity to see 15 minutes of footage from James Cameron’s upcoming sci-fi epic in all its IMAX 3D glory.

At the time the Avatar teaser trailer had just dropped to lukewarm reception; readers were waiting for a more in-depth analysis of the film, both on a visual and plot level. After seeing the preview footage, I asserted that Avatar is going to be a great fantasy adventure, but didn’t really feel like the sci-fi epic it had been touted as… Talk about opening a can a worms!

Within hours of posting that story I was being strung up by readers calling me everything from an “idiot” to a “big idiot” for (supposedly) not knowing the difference between the sci-fi and fantasy genres -- “Might as well start calling apples oranges, »

Casting Notes: Ray Winstone in Red Snow; Goran Visnjic in Beginners; Gwyneth Paltrow in Let the Right One In Director’s Next

9 November 2009 7:30 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Here's a bit of casting news to start the day. Ray Winstone has jumped onto Red Snow, a "serial killer thriller" in which Winstone will be "an ex-sas officer tracking down his missing daughter in the snow forests of a remote town in north Canada." Script and direction are by Stuart St. Paul based on the true story of a killer that targeted Alaskan towns in the '80s. You don't know St. Paul's name, but you know his work; he's been a stunt guy for over 30 years with credits including Aliens, some of the Roger Moore Bond films and the recent Red Riding productions. [THR] After the break, news for Goran Visnjic and Gwyneth Paltrow. ER's Goran Visnjic has joined Beginners, an indie that has already attracted a significant cast: Ewan McGregor, Melanie Laurent (Shosanna from Inglourious Basterds) and Christopher Plummer are in this one. Directing is Mike Mills, »

Badasses of Horror: Part Two

9 November 2009 6:30 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

See the first part of this article here.

Ellen Ripley (Alien/Aliens, 1979/86)

Warrant Officer Ellen Ripley is just hanging out on the intergalactic transport ship Nostromo, leading the often-dull life of a Space Teamster, when all of a sudden, out of nowhere, her idiot captain decides to land on the remote planet Lv-426 to investigate some stupid distress signal emanating from a crashed spaceship. Now, as we all know, responding to distress signals is one of the top five most insanely boneheaded tactical decisions any science-fiction/horror space traveler can possibly make, but this doesn’t stop Captain Numbnuts from ordering his crew to get their asses down there and dope out the spooky alien wreckage.

Of course, once they go down to investigate, some dumbass crewmember decides it would be totally hilarious to stick his face in one of the strange egglike things he finds in the smoldering wreckage of the derelict ship. »

What If The Batmobile Was Designed By 'Alien' Artist H.R. Giger?

3 November 2009 2:29 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Sure, Batman and various other comic book characters have battled the creatures from the "Alien" movie franchise on more than one occasion (my favorite being Warren Ellis' "WildC.A.T.S/Aliens" story), but here's a crossover I never expected to see—and never will see, most likely.

According to BatmobileHistory.com, one of the designers contacted to create a new version of the Batmobile for 1995's "Batman Forever" (starring Val Kilmer as Bruce Wayne) was none other than Swiss artist H.R. Giger, best known for creating the original, techno-organic design of the "Alien" creatures.

SuperPunch has also managed to locate a few pieces of Giger's early design art for the vehicle, which I've posted after the jump.

"H.R. Giger was contacted in 1994 to design a Batmobile for Batman Forever," reports BatmobileHistory. "His unique 'X' shaped design was to include articulated front legs/mandibles, retractable fins, and gatling gun »

‘The Fourth Kind’ Abduction Featurette and Genre Picks

2 November 2009 10:15 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

If you have been eagerly anticipating Friday’s release of The Fourth Kind, here is a creepy little featurette from Universal and Yahoo Movies to prime you for the movie — which you can watch after the jump. It’s no spoiler to note that the plot of the movie has to do with missing people in Alaska, and possible alien abduction. This featurette provides a back-story, so to speak, about the four different kinds of alien encounters.

Still can’t sate your appetite for alien abduction? If so, take a look at these other genre titles while you are biding your time. And, look for our review of The Fourth Kind on Friday.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) – Arguably the best known in the genre. This movie terrified me when I saw it as a child. Steven Speilberg’s follow up to Jaws racked up several oscar nominations and won for best cinematography. »

New 'Avatar' trailer: Coming into explosive focus

29 October 2009 10:44 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Avatar has been a hard film to wrestle with. When those first looks at this winter's 3-D spectacular-spectacular dropped a couple of months ago -- the teaser trailer and Fox's Avatar Day -- the footage was met with either huzzahs or harrumphs. James Cameron's return to sci-fi filmmaking is so eagerly anticipated that everyone pounced on the first morsels of Pandorian goodness, trying to process it in one large bite, myself included. Now that we know, to a certain degree, what we're in for -- blue aliens on a lush world doing battle with humans with big guns -- »

Avatar Featurette Looks Behind The Scenes

29 October 2009 8:25 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

All aboard the Avatar train! Next stop Pandora!

I won’t lie: I have been on the skeptical side of the fence when it comes to Avatar. Not because I thought the film was going to be a dud or not fun to watch, but because I didn’t think all the hype was justified. Well, I just watched the International Trailer for Avatar, and I must say, color me impressed. Today, Coming Soon has dropped a new behind-the-scenes featurette on the making of Avatar and it gives some further insight on the film.

Avatar is the 10+ year brainchild of Aliens director James Cameron and is supposed to be the greatest achievement in cinema since the addition of color and sound. The 20th Century Fox endeavor is reported to have a production budget somewhere between $200 and $300 million, which would make it the most expensive film created to date. There is »

tMF Featured Trailer: Avatar (International Trailer) + Featurette!

I was very impressed the first time I watched the trailer of James Cameron's latest (and probably greatest) epic - Avatar. Getting my first introduction to a new world with completely fascinating beings and an altogether unique and beautiful world was a delightful experience, it was the same kind of excitement I got when I saw Stars Wars for the first time. - - -

- - - A new Avatar trailer will be available in a few hours, but take a look at the International trailer after the jump!

- - -

- - - More About the Movie: In the future, Jake, a paraplegic war veteran, is brought to another planet, Pandora, which is inhabited by the Na'vi, a humanoid race with their own language and culture. Those from Earth find themselves at odds with each other and the local culture.

Is The Plot Of James Cameron’s Avatar Plagiarized?

28 October 2009 10:46 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

With the hoopla over James Cameron’s upcoming sci-fi blockbuster Avatar, you wouldn’t expect a spanner to be thrown in the works at this stage in the game, less than two months from its release. But that appears to be the case, with the aforementioned  trouble taking the form of an uncanny resemblance between Avatar’s plot and the plot of a 1957 Poul Anderson novella called Call Me Joe.

Some sites – such as over at io9 where this story originated – are asking the question of whether or not Avatar is a rip-off of Anderson’s sci-fi story from over five decades ago. It seems a bit strong to say “rip-off” but the evidence of the similarities between the two plots is undeniable. One of io9’s readers, “Goldfarb,” pointed them toward Call Me Joe – take a look at the plot synopsis for both it and Avatar, along with some artwork for both, »

50 Influential Scream Queens: Part 2

27 October 2009 10:57 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Before I launch into the conclusion of my 50 Influential Scream Queens (read part 1 here), please let me remind you that this list is based upon my personal taste, and my personal taste alone. I didn't poll 100 Fango readers, the Fango staff or any other form of 'industry professionals'. It's all opinion, so if you feel I've wronged a certain actress by excluding them from the list, don't leap to brand the entire Fango crew 'vile'.  I probably just don't personally find their work to be that influential. Either that or I'm just ignorant to their accomplishments!

25. Mia Farrow: Mia's genre work may be a bit limited, but that doesn't change the fact that Rosemary's Baby will forever be regarded as one of the creepiest films in history. Farrow's portrayal of Rosemary Woodhouse is harrowing to say the least, and will always remain (in my mind) one of the best performances the genre has seen. »
