Season 1, Episode 0: Pilot
15 September 1986Pilot episode for the TV series introduces the lawyers and employees of McKenzie, Brackman, Chaney and Kuzak, a Los Angeles law firm, in dealing with their courtroom cases and personal matters out of the courthouse. While the entire office deals with the unexpected death of one of the founding senior partners, Norman Chaney, junior partner Michael Kuzak reluctantly takes on the defense of a wealthy and spoiled young man, accused with two friends, of raping a woman dying from leukemia. While intern Abby Perkins deals with her abusive alcoholic husband, divorce lawyer Arnie Becker takes advantage of his latest client caught up in her divorce. Public defender Victor Sifuentes is also offered to join the firm, while the ruthless managing partner, Douglas Brackman, deals with a surprising revelation from his new secretary.
3 October 1986Kuzak sets his sights on Deputy D.A. Grace Van Owen while he helps Victor defend a Hispanic man from an assault charge after he became enraged when his son's killer, a wealthy man, was set free on a legal technicality. Meanwhile, Kelsey faces criticism from Brackman when she turns down a large insurance settlement for her pro-bono client. Andrew Taylor, a disgruntled associate, tells the senior partner, Leland McKenzie, and Brackman what he thinks of the firm's hiring policies as they pursue the hiring of Victor. Stuart Markowitz, the firm's tax specialist, tries to get Kelsey's attention. At the reading of Chaney's will, Georgia Buckner inherits the majority of his wealth, and Brackman gets Chaney's own personal secretary, Hilda. Abby asks Becker to represent her in suing for divorce from her abusive husband. After Andrew Taylor quits the firm and law clerk Bruce Pollak leaves, Abby is named a full-time associate. Also, Becker also insists to the partners for the dismissal of law clerk Lisa Weston, his secret girlfriend.
10 October 1986Victor suffers through a dinner with the Brackmans when they want him to romance (and marry) their Hispanic maid who is threatened with deportation. Meanwhile, Markowitz finds himself in the middle of a fierce tax-audit between sleazy millionaire Irving Lewis, and alcoholic IRS agent Marv Fletcher in which Markowitz resorts to lying about Lewis' tax claims. Kuzak's personal-injury suit against an amusement park becomes complicated by his young client's greedy, adoptive father. Also, Abby's personal troubles take a turn for the worse when she learns that her husband has kidnapped their three-year-old son Eric.
17 October 1986McKenzie takes a dim view of future lawyers after his guest lecture at a law school which is filled by questions from the students dominated by self-interest. McKenzie's secretary, Iris, takes a dim view of her future with the firm and of the new law clerk, Jeffrey Sullivan, whom McKenzie hires. Meanwhile, Irving Lewis follows Becker's advice concerning his divorce, then blames him when his young wife won't return to him. Victor goes to bat for a young girl facing charges after she shot her brother who tried to rape her. Kuzak meets with Grace's fiancé while continuing to try to win her affections, and Markowitz wows Kelsey with his private life. Abby tries to continue working despite not knowing the whereabouts of her son.
24 October 1986Kuzak represents Harry Finneman, an elderly man who is fighting for his constitutional right to be freeze-dried after his death. Becker pursues Hilary Mishkin, a screenwriter client who is divorcing her director husband. Meanwhile, Markowitz and Kelsey represent a toy company president whose office faces a hostile takeover bid and they receive offers for partnership in return for their successful defense. At the end, Kuzak goes totally ape, literally, when he crashes Grace's wedding dressed in a gorilla suit and proclaims his love for her.
31 October 1986Kuzak represents Stacey Gill, a TV news anchorwoman who lost her on-air job following a broadcast of graphic reports concerning her breast cancer surgery. Meanwhile, Brackman is taken to court when a group of people that live in an inner city housing project accuse him of being a slumlord and their lawyer is Andrew Taylor, the former McKenzie Brackman associate. Jeffrey Sullivan causes concern for Victor when he suspects Jeffrey of dealing drugs within the office. Becker tries to work out a payment plan for his services to Hillary Mishkin.
7 November 1986The Stacey Gill civil suit continues when she baffles Kuzak by rejecting a generous settlement from her former employer. Meanwhile, Victor bets Kuzak his leather office chair that he can win in a no-win dog bite case. Abby meets with another lawyer in the building who takes her out on a date and tries to persuade her to go on with her life. Also, Becker turns to his secretary, Roxanne, for comfort when Hilary Mishkin leaves him. A fully restored Brackman comes to peace terms with his tenants and Andrew Taylor.
14 November 1986Kuzak wants to take his relationship with Grace public, then reporters drag her through the mud during a press conference when her former fiancé tells them that she left him at their wedding with a unknown man (Kuzak) in a gorilla suit. Meanwhile, Kelsey pushes the trustees of a fund intended to benefit the poor and homeless of Beverly Hills into doing something. Victor tries to defend the spoiled Jeffrey Sullivan on drug dealing charges, who is convinced he can buy his way out of the drug rap. Also, Abby's stress over her missing son comes out while she is helping Becker in a divorce case between a couple using their child at a bargaining chip.
21 November 1986Foster Troutman, a charming polygamist, causes an uproar at the firm over Becker and Markowitz's tax audit case of him and his 11 wives, and he offers Markowtiz a new sexual maneuver on pleasing a woman while Becker is attracted to his lawyer, Lynette Pierce. Meanwhile, Grace faces the difficult task of prosecuting Christopher Appleton, a gay man afflicted with AIDS, who's accused of the mercy killing his similarly infected lover. Abby faces an agonizing ordeal with Kelsey in search for her son when she receives news of an battered anonymous child's death. The other partners quarrel over who will get Chaney's desirable office, and with a coin toss, Markowitz wins.
4 December 1986Kuzak stands firm against capital punishment for a convicted rapist/murderer, despite persuasive arguments that his client will kill again if released pending a new trial. Meanwhile, Becker becomes caught in the middle of his parents divorce action when both his mother and father ask him to represent them against the other and Roxanne eventually rescues him from the mess of this situation. McKenzie indirectly forces Victor to withdraw from an unpopular case in which Victor threatens to quit. Grace hands Mark Gilliam, Appleton's lawyer, new defense grounds for a new trial in the AIDS mercy-killing case. Also, Abby brings a stray dog to work which causes nothing but problems, and Brackman eventually adopts it.
Season 1, Episode 10: El Sid
11 December 1986Sid Hershberg, a mentally unstable, overworked and underpaid attorney, begs Kuzak to take over one of his many pro bono cases of Nina Emmons, a woman jailed for over five months on an attempted murder charge. Meanwhile, Becker tries to persuade the firm to hire some tall man as a temporary associate to bolster the office basketball squad for an important game after Victor leaves. Kelsey fumes while Markowitz redecorates his new office, but her mood changed when he gives it to her as a gift. Abby tries to start her life over again when her ex-husband returns with their son. Also, Grace is put on night court duty for an indefinite period.
18 December 1986Sid Hershberg tries to make a comeback, but he can't take the pressure and kills himself in front of Kuzak while he is trying to get the attempted murder charges against Nina Emmons dropped. Becker gets caught making out with a client's former wife. Meanwhile, Kelsey faces a mountain of garbage (literally) as she tries to wind a contract dispute over an inventor's tea-bag technology. Brackman quarrels with everyone over the annual holiday festivities and McKenzie gives his secretary, Iris, a law book for her future career of studying law. Abby's ex-husband lets their son, Eric, stay with her for the Christmas holidays, and Victor returns to the firm.
8 January 1987Kuzak has difficulty getting over Sid Hershberg's suicide and seems to assume the dead lawyer's identity by taking over Hershberg's cases. Then Kuzak faces a dilemma when his latest client, lacking confidence in the overworked lawyer, arranges an alibi for himself in a vehicular manslaughter case. When Kuzak has an attack of conscious and withdraws from the case, he is thrown in jail for contempt. Meanwhile, Kelsey works to land Cromwell Industries, a key aircraft manufacturer's account. Roxanne comforts Andrew Putnam, a lonely teenage computer hacker and Victor's client, who's hired to fix the firm's telephones.
15 January 1987Brackman (recovering from a broken ankle) asks Becker to represent him after his wife, Sheila, serves him with divorce pagers and she retains Becker's former girlfriend and law associate, Lisa Weston, to represent her. Meanwhile, Markowitz feels very jealous after Kelsey wins the court case for Cromwell Industries and the personal appreciation from Mr. Cromwell himself. Judge Hood, a retiring superior court judge, pressures McKenzie for a job at the firm, and Victor uses statistical evidence as he accuses another judge of bigotry for his Hispanic client. Also, Roxanne reluctantly agrees to go out on a date with the insecure Andrew Putnam.
22 January 1987While McKenzie is dealing with Judge Hood facing bribery charges, he's asked by another senior partner from a national firm in New York, named Marshal Taft & Associates, to merge their two organizations which raises many expectations. Meanwhile, Roxanne and the other secretaries resent the intrusion of two efficiency experts from Marshal Taft. Also, Abby has her first solo court appearance and gets burned for her poor preparation.
Season 1, Episode 15: Beef Jerky
5 February 1987Grace returns to day court and has problems keeping the prosecution of a man accused of stealing bull semen on the serious side. Meanwhile, Victor goes beyond professional bounds in urging a troubled family to seek redress for the death of their son in a car accident. Becker insists to Carolyn, his latest client, on aggressively pursing evidence against her husband's marital infidelities despite her objections, and then regrets it when she attempts to shoot her husband in Becker's office. Abby assists with Victor's case while searching for a suitable escort for a family wedding and winds up with an unexpected volunteer: a district attorney named George Handelman, who grilled her during her first court appearance.
12 February 1987A top pharmaceutical company tries to repackage Kuzak after hiring him to win a product-liability case. But he and Victor show them a few things about swaying a jury during a mock trial. Meanwhile, Roxanne asserts herself and demands a pay raise from Becker. Markowitz learns a lot about Kelsey when he handles her massive tax return. Also, Abby takes another court case when she defends Benny Stulwicz, a retarded man against charges of robbery.
19 February 1987Grace pushes hard for the death penalty against a convicted gang member and murderer of a prison guard in which she gets rewarded with threats against her life by his gang members. Meanwhile, Victor becomes intimately involved with Jocelyn Pennebaker, a dentist he defended in a malpractice suit. Becker suffers trying to go on a date with his new temporary secretary while Roxanne is away on jury duty and holds firm against the acquittal of a man facing an assault and battery charge.
26 February 1987Brackman's sudden self-consciousness about his baldness prompts anxiety in the other men of the firm as well. Meanwhile, Grace's brush with death at the hands of a gang member leaves her fearful and resentful of Kuzak's and everyone's protective attitude. Roxanne inspires strength in Becker's timid client, but warns her about rebound romances. Also, Victor gains a courtroom admirer after he defends a man's use of marijuana as a religious sacrament.
26 March 1987Brackman's quarrel with a eccentric neighbor's complaint about his barking dog escalates dramatically when the fight turns ugly and physical. Meanwhile, Kuzak faces a tough opposing counsel when he represents a young woman suing a football jock in a date rape civil suit. Kelsey and Markowitz argue over the sale of her condominium, and Abby tentatively tries a new romance with George Handelman.
2 April 1987Kelsey takes Markowitz on a camping trip in the hills which turns disastrous. Meanwhile, Kuzak tries to help Ron Messer, a fisherman who lost his boat when the IRS confiscated it in a tax dispute. Becker falls hard for a young model, named Lucinda, but later discovers that she's only using him to make her current boyfriend jealous. Grace's addiction to pills and hard liquor catches up with her. Also, Brackman involves Victor and Abby in his continuing dispute with his neighbor over the death of his dog, and Iris worries when an unusually moody McKenzie hesitates to see a doctor.
Season 1, Episode 21: Pigmalion
9 April 1987Victor and Abby defend a woman accused of murdering her baby. Kuzak's fisherman client, Ron Messer, wins his case against the IRS, but loses his boat anyway to bank foreclosure. Meanwhile, Kelsey and Markowitz wind up in Las Vegas while celebrating their six-month anniversary together, complete with an Elvis impersonator at a wedding chapel. Becker's client makes some astounding accusations against her husband, a kiddie-show TV host, concerning the family pig. Also, Grace leaves Kuzak for a while to sort out her feelings. McKenzie finally clears the air with Iris about a minor medical condition of his.
15 October 1987Kuzak lets his anti-smoking feelings enter into his latest civil case involving a man dying from emphysema who is suing a tobacco company. Meanwhile, Becker's position as the lawyer for a man being divorced by a wealthy film star calls for some close personal negotiations with the lady. Victor experiences nothing but bad luck after leasing an expensive new sports car that repeating gets broken into and eventually stolen. Jonathan Rollins, a young black lawyer and prospective new associate, pumps Abby for information about the firm. Also, Kelsey's anxiety over her upcoming wedding to Markowitz surfaces in bickering between them.
22 October 1987Kelsey defends Dr. Peter Warren, a psychiatrist against a civil suit based on his failure to warn one of his patients about the dangerous obsession displayed by another patient. Meanwhile, Victor vies with Hamilton Schuyler (a.k.a.: Mighty Mouse), a crafty dwarf attorney, in a dramatic civil case concerning the disfigurement of a little boy in a fire whose mother is suing the pajama company Victor is representing. Abby finds herself intrigued by the new associate, Anthony Gianelli, who's worried about failing the bar exam and having to return to "the family business." Brackman takes a seat on the bench of a small claims court where he meets a passionate bailiff, Rhonda Vasek. McKenzie interviews Rollins about a possibly in joining the firm. Also, Becker volunteers himself for a bachelor auction, and get more than he bargained for with Nina Hollender, the woman who "bought" him, is determined to get her money's worth.
29 October 1987Kelsey takes her dilemma concerning Dr. Warren to a retired DA. Meanwhile, Brackman assigns another associate to the Rohner vs. Gradinger case. Abby helps a dying Mrs. Stulwicz set up a trust to care for Benny and gets him a job with the firm as a messenger. Becker follows his usual pattern with Nina, then breaks up with her when she brings up talk of marriage. Victor continues his case against Hamilton Schuyler and finds himself fighting a losing battle. Markowitz and Kelsey are both angered when Brackman suggests that married partners are not welcome in the firm. Also, Jonathan Rollins is greeted warily as he officially joins the firm.
5 November 1987Becker turns over a losing case concerning a case of "car homicide" to Leslie Kleinberg, a pretty new associate, then pursues the case and the associate when Leslie decides to leave the firm. Meanwhile, Kelsey defends a water company CEO against charges that they've polluted the drinking water of a nearby trailer park, causing birth defects. Brackman, after another humiliation by his insanely jealous wife Sheila, turns to Rhonda for comfort. Grace becomes upset and jealous when she meets Lynn Palmer, Kuzak's ex-wife whom he never mentioned. Also, Abby learns how much Rollins is being paid and sparks a rebellion among the associates.
12 November 1987Brackman learns some upsetting things about his late, revered father as he peruses some old papers of his and finds Rusty Farrell, a former film actress and his father's mistress along with her balding son (and his half-brother) Erroll, a sleazy attorney. Meanwhile, the Rohner vs. Gradinger case ends up back in Kelsey's lap, who passes it on to Abby. Markowitz asks Kelsey to sign a prenuptial agreement just to test her love of him. Victor handles a civil suit for a woman raped at a deserted bar while an off-duty police officer stood by. Benny's mother dies and the firm rallies around him for support. Also, Grace agrees to meet with Lynn Palmer for lunch to find out if she still has feelings for Kuzak.
19 November 1987Brackman agonizes when his half-brother, Erroll, catches him making out with his bailiff, Rhonda, in which he blackmails Brackman for use of his office at the firm. Meanwhile, McKenzie is reluctant to go back into the courtroom for the first time in years to handle an age-discrimination case with his hearing impairment. Rollins aggressively deposes a divorcing spouse, despite the partners objections to his tactics. Markowitz tries without success to apologize to an elusive Kelsey over the prenuptial agreement. Also, Grace persuades a reluctant mother to testify against the gang members accused in a drive-by shooting, and later regrets it.
3 December 1987Kuzak has little sympathy for his celebrity client, Patrick Boyd, in defending him for drug possession. Rhonda creates a scene at the firm after Brackman breaks off his affair with her. Meanwhile, Victor meets Lauren Sevilla, an unhappy woman he met after getting stuck in a elevator whose marriage is on the rocks. Rollins goes ahead on his own to retrieve a client angry with Markowitz, and then lands his for himself. Kelsey's anti-Semitic and racist mother arrives in town to meet with Markowitz. The Rohner vs. Gradinger case comes to a climax, and dramatically changes Abby's future.
10 December 1987Grace gets a lot of criticism from her co-workers at the D.A.'s office when she willingly agrees to prosecute three lawyers accused of sexual battery against an underage stripper. Meanwhile, Abby loses the Rohner vs. Gradinger case to Rollins, and Kelsey and Markowitz finally set a wedding date. A despondent Becker tries to raise his spirits by redoing Benny in his own image. Also, Brackman worries about having AIDS after his tryst with Rhonda Vasek.
17 December 1987Victor's love for Lauren is tested when she's arrested after she shoots and kills her ex-husband and it appears to have been premeditated. Although Victor gets the murder charges against Lauren dropped, he's still skeptical about her story of self-defense and breaks up with her. Meanwhile, Abby discovers Erroll in Brackman's office and learns of his arrangement with him while Sheila seduces Erroll as payback after learning of Brackman' affair, in which he suffers an anxiety attack. Grace prosecutes Reuben Mendez, a teenager who has been accused of killing his own father after years of abuse. Benny plays Santa at the annual Christmas party, where Becker persuades Roxanne to go with him to visit his parents for the holidays.
7 January 1988Markowitz and Kelsey experience prenuptial jitters as they prepare to make their wedding vows in a former ceremony at their house. Meanwhile, Benny is arrested for sexual assault after he confesses, and Kuzak and Becker search for proof that the charges are bogus. Rollins represents former McKenzie Brackman associate Anthony Gianelli, now a circus stuntman, whose entire crippled family is being sued by an audience member claiming that he was injured during a show. Roxanne meets Jimmy Markham, a stockbroker after they accidentally hit each other in the garage parking lot and a passionate affair begins between them. Also, Sheila Brackman causes another scene at the wedding ceremony when she tells Douglas that she wants a divorce.
14 January 1988Victor takes Benny to the zoo where he soon becomes involved in pleasing Benny's questions about life and love when he becomes involved in a case involving the mistreatment of a zoo gorilla. Becker's client, Ken Seaver, accused of molestation, disappears with his young daughter. Meanwhile, Roxanne ignores Becker's suspicions about Jimmy with his stock tips that may be from insider trading while she gives some stock tip advice to Kelsey, Abby and others at the firm whom Kelsey spends her shares on a $10,000 Rolex wristwatch as a gift for Markowitz.
21 January 1988Brackman unwittingly gets arrested for solicitation by an inexperienced undercover policewoman who mistakes his reading of a Japanese restaurant menu for come-ons. Meanwhile, Roxanne tells Kuzak and Becker that she is willing to reject immunity to stand by Jimmy during his trial for insider trading. Victor represents Lorna Landsberg, a food critic being sued by a restaurant owner after she gave a scathing review of the place that cost it heavily. Grace receives and accepts a lucrative partnership offer with an old friend from law school. At the end, Kelsey tells Markowitz about her part in Roxanne's insider stock tips, which takes a sudden turn when they are both mugged by an infamous, well-dressed robber known as "the yuppie bandit."
11 February 1988Kuzak represents Lynn Stetler, a lawyer suing the law firm she was fired from because of her obesity. Meanwhile, Grace refuses to take the case of John Vincent, her first client offered in her new partnership arrangement because of his alleged mafia connections. Markowitz inherits $30 million after an elderly, senile client dies and he faces a dissenting chorus which include Kelsey, a televangelist, and the client's disgruntled children all after the money. Also, Rollins makes a self-serving TV appearance on a talk show that rankles his co-workers, which leads to them scaring Rollins in a practical joke. Then Rollins finally wises up and decides to even the score.
18 February 1988Benny has a date with another retarded young woman from his support group that doesn't go well at all. After witnessing the murder of John Vincent, Grace angrily quits her new partnership after learning of all the mob connections her place has and starts to develop her "domestic side." Meanwhile, Kelsey and Markowitz go to court to testify against the so-called "yuppie bandit" who stole Markowitz's Rolex watch that Kelsey bought with money from Roxanne's insider stock tips. Becker goes beyond the bounds of propriety while representing Jack Seiling, an actor attempting to prevent his TV show producer, Jamie Needham, from airing an embarrassing program of him in drag while Becker is revealed to be romantically involved with Jamie who has staged this suit just for publicity reasons for her studio which angers Becker's colleges at the firm.
25 February 1988After Brackman' estranged mother dies, he learns that he has yet another bald half-brother, named Gordon Salt, from another one of late father's mistresses. Gordon, a psychiatrist, tries to help Douglas with his marital problems with Sheila, when really he wants her for himself. Meanwhile, Abby and Rollins learn more about each other as they work late hours to document a potential class action suit. McKenzie tries to help Victor settle a lawsuit brought by a woman against August Redding, a elderly legendary lawyer who's mental facilities are slowly leaving him. Kuzak tries to coax Grace out of her self-imposed retirement by offering a position as co-counsel for Andy Prescott and Thomas Mullaney, two teenage boys accused of a felony murder in connection with a convenience store robbery.
3 March 1988Brackman looks to Rusty for sympathy when his reconciliation with Sheila falls through after she begins an affair with Gordon. Meanwhile, Benny fears for his job when he accidentally shreds an important file. Kelsey argues for a Caesarean section to save the unborn child of a dying woman. Also, Kuzak and Grace have a major disagreement about how to conduct their defense of Andy Prescott and Thomas Mullaney who blame each other for the murder of the convenience store clerk.
14 April 1988Victor begins a complicated case concerning the undo influence of a younger woman over a much older man. Grace's return to the D.A.'s office is marked by dark humor over her prosecuting a man who clubbed a swan to death on a golf course. Meanwhile, Kuzak defends Megan Penny, a woman who killed a foreign diplomat who raped her and walked away because of his diplomatic immunity. Also, Brackman continues his secret affair with Rusty, until Erroll finds out.
21 April 1988Becker becomes smitten by Monica Ryan, an attractive judge hearing one of his divorce cases and shortly thereafter she hires him to handle her own divorce from her husband. Meanwhile, Rollins and Markowitz use questionable means in a desperate attempt to win a lawsuit against Robert Bolland, a shady business manager accused of defrauding an old woman. A revenge-seeking Erroll launches an all-out war with Brackman when he causes a scene at a formal dinner party by announcing that he has decided to represent Sheila suing for divorce from Brackman. Elizabeth Brand, Kuzak's secretary, introduces a lonely Roxanne to Dave Meyer, a incredibly boring direct-mail mogul.
28 April 1988Kelsey represents Julius Goldfarb, a former TV actor consumed by his crime fighting alter ego, the Salamander. Becker has a very happy birthday when he invites Judge Monica Ryan to spend it with him. 5 May 1988Vernon Kepler, an old friend and client of McKenzie, peruses a frivolous lawsuit against an old card playing rival of his and introduces McKenzie to his beautiful granddaughter, Jennifer, as a possible associate for the firm. Meanwhile, Grace is frustrated in her attempts to prosecute a young black man who accidentally shot and crippled a security guard who stopped him for suspected shop lifting because the defending lawyer Lee Atkins, a civil rights black activist, goes to the limits of ethics to derail Grace's case by bringing up the issue of racism, and even calling Grace a racist in open court. Dave Meyer continues his pursuit of Roxanne by offering her one of his many cars for her to drive and offers her to house sit for him. Also, Victor finally brings the elusive twins to visit the office.
3 November 1988Victor represents a terrified family suing a security firm who did not react in a timely manner to a break-in. Meanwhile, McKenzie fumbles over Jennifer Kepler's continued sexual advances to him, and Kuzak lobbies for Benny's right to vote in an oncoming election. Grace prosecutes a man who is accused of licking a woman's ear without permission. Abby receives bad news of her performance review and thinks about quitting the firm. Kelsey reveals her ambivalence of having a baby to Markowitz. Also, Roxanne ponders a marriage proposal from Dave Meyer.
10 November 1988Grace is prosecuting Lyle Torrey, a young gang member accused of killing two policemen. As the case progresses, Grace stumbles upon a conspiracy by her boss, Bruce Rogoff, to get a conviction and he tells her to look pass an important loop hole that could free the suspected cop-killer. Meanwhile, Roxanne involves Becker in her domestic problems when she asks him to represent Dave Meyer's sister, Madeline, in a divorce from her husband. Kelsey is representing a 13-year-old boy suing his father for slapping him. Also, Abby resigns from the firm to open up her own private practice.
17 November 1988Kuzak is involved in a pro-bono case in defending an accused rapist, and his tactics draw scorn from both Grace and his colleges at the firm. Meanwhile, Meyer's boring talks and constant direct-mail sales pitches tests Roxanne's patience. Becker opts to get a prenuptial pack voided from his client who's husband sets her up to watch her have sex with other men. Kelsey and Markowitz continue their efforts to conceive a child. Abby sets up her own office for her practice. Also, Becker and Judge Monica Ryan split up for good.
1 December 1988Markowitz starts taking fertility pills for his low sperm count which makes him physically sick. Abby takes questionable measures against Whitley Holland, a deadbeat plumber who asks her to take his case of him being sued by a health club owner over his poor work. When Abby decides not to represent Holland anymore, he flips out and assaults her, resulting in her shooting him dead. Meanwhile, Victor and Rollins nearly come to blows of their conduct in a wrongful death case in which their client, Laura Coyle, is suing a corporation who insisted that her husband go on a mountain climbing trip which led to his death. Also, Kuzak and Grace continue to drift apart because of her constant anger towards him. But eventually, Grace tells Kuzak the reason for her anger because she allowed herself to be corrupted by agreeing to cover up certain evidence in the Lyle Torrey case.
8 December 1988Kuzak learns that Richard Mathers, the opposing council in his latest personal injury case which involved a new car, never passed the bar exam. However, Kuzak decides to use this information to his own advantage. Meanwhile, Kelsey and Markowitz grow increasingly wearily of trying to conceive and they begin talk of adoption. While Brackman is going over the final divorce settlement from Sheila, he hires Dorothy Wyler, a 52-year-old lawyer as an associate and who too is a divorcée. Abby, still frightened after her shooting of Holland, allows police lieutenant Bill Ringstrom to comfort her and accompany her to a interview a hostile witness.
15 December 1988Rollins represents Kenny Peterson, a mentally disturbed young man who speaks only through his obnoxious, ventriloquist's dummy in an assault case. Meanwhile, Kelsey's celebrity client, Amanda Shaw, sues a tabloid magazine for publishing a false article which resulted in her teenage daughter's suicide and she ends up worse than she started. Markowitz and Kelsey meet with Ross Burnet, a baby broker in their continuing quest to adopt a baby. Victor represents an unusually arrogant Kuzak as he faces a disciplinary court for his conduct over not reporting an unlicensed Richard Matthers during his personal injury trial while Matthers is representing himself in his own criminal trial for practicing law without a license. Also, Markowitz agrees to cater the annual Christmas office party and ends up playing Santa Claus.
5 January 1989Grace reveals a technicality that could free convicted cop killer Lyle Torrey. But a certain police officer, named Lt. Dolan, tries to prevent Grace from getting Torrey released pending a new trial. Becker forms a partnership with Dave Meyer in trying to make their own do-it-yourself-divorce video tape to market to the masses. Meanwhile, Abby grows more attracted to Lt. Ringstrom and they finally begin a torrid affair. Also, Kelsey and Markowitz meet with a possible birth mother to adopt her baby.
12 January 1989Kuzak returns to the firm after his suspension and represents Lawrence Stone, the head of a nudist colony who is faced with being closed down due to nuisance complaints from the neighbors while one of the members, Tracy Shoe, is revealed to have a hidden agenda to the case. Meanwhile, Benny develops a crush on Becker's current girlfriend, Allison Gottlieb, the director for his divorce video, after he saves her from a rude bar patron. Also, Victor represents a hospital that does not want to let a brain-dead woman be taken off life support.
19 January 1989Grace once again faces off against Lee Atkins, the conniving and racist black lawyer, who again uses the issue of race in which he is defending a middle-aged black man who shot and killed a white man in his apartment whom he thought was an intruder, whereas Grace's argument is that it was a drug deal gone wrong. Seeing that the odds are against him this time, Atkins resorts to low and underhanded means against Grace to get a mistrial declared rather than lose. Meanwhile, Abby unwisely advices a client of hers to accept a settlement because her own practice is in financial difficulty. Markowitz and Kelsey are contacted by their baby broker who has information on a possible baby girl that they can adopt. Allison Gottlieb rejects Becker, but she goes out on a date with Victor and they immediately engage in a passionate affair.
9 February 1989Becker grows resentful when the other partners enforce a partnership pose that forces him to share his do-it-yourself divorce video profits. Meanwhile, Brackman gets arrested after he causes a scene on an airplane that's stranded on the LAX airport runway. Also, Victor and Grace are pitted against each other in the courtroom where he defends a man accused of hiring a hit man to kill his wife.
16 February 1989McKenzie helps a widow and her family try to retrieve the parts of her husband's body after it was accidentally donated to a lab for medical research. Roxanne, constantly on the edge because of her diet and Meyer's constant direct-sales pitches, is arrested for assault and battery after she hits a smug, rich woman who makes a joke about her weight. Meanwhile, Kuzak represents Ray Davis, a young man who is suing a hospital that allegedly let his wife die because they didn't have insurance to cover their medical bills.
23 February 1989Kuzak secretly picks a retired gay judge to hear his case of Matthew Leonard, a gay Olympic athlete, whose recent announcement of his homosexuality has apparently voided his endorsement contract with an advertising company. Meanwhile, Abby learns that Lt. Ringstrom is marred with two children and decides to break up with him. Kelsey and Markowitz have problems over looking after their newly adopted baby daughter. Roxanne tells Meyer that she thinks they should separate for a while to sort out their feelings for each other. Meyer then crashes a romantic date between Victor and Allison where he confides in them about his marital problems.
23 March 1989McKenzie's candidacy for federal judgment ship has strict conditions, which include conflicts of interest within the firm. Meanwhile, Victor represents the wife of a dead construction worker who is suing the company for negligence and a congressman involved in the incident tries to protect his name. Becker's stardom for his divorce video grows and he receives unwanted attention from a deranged man whose wife left him after watching the video.
30 March 1989Grace has difficulty prosecuting four elderly bank robbers and facing their elderly lawyer. Due to his losing streak in the courtroom for the past several months, Kuzak gets passed over for an important case and is given a second chair with Becker on a contract dispute between film producer Melanie Hayes and her studio. McKenzie finally tells Jennifer Kepler that they can't see each other anymore because of their age differences. Also, Rollins takes on his first murder case in defending Wanda Havens, a poor young woman charged with murdering her abusive husband.
6 April 1989Roxanne and Meyer attend a ceremony where he will receive the Direct Mail Man of the Year award, and she glimpses a view of her future with him. Meanwhile, Markowitz and Kelsey get an unpleasant surprise when the teenage birth mother of their child says that she wants her baby back to raise it by herself. Abby's latest client cons her and skips on his bail, which makes her look bad to Grace. The firm goes to pieces after Brackman hands the office managing responsibilities to Markowitz for the week. Also, Rollins falls for the new law associate, Diana Moses.
27 April 1989Victor represents Markowitz and Kelsey when Tammy Harris, the teenage birth mother of their baby, brings a claim to get her baby back. Meanwhile, Abby's latest client, mobster Frank Weiland, cons her in getting himself off murder and drug dealing charges, and later frames her for money laundering to get rid of his drug cash. Kuzak has problems facing a comedian lawyer during his case of representing a man suing the owner of a heating system for injuries, while he finally expresses dissatisfaction to Grace over their relationship and heats up his other relationship with Melanie Hayes. Also, Rollins continues to try to win Diana's affections.
4 May 1989Grace has mixed feelings when she prosecutes a wealthy businessman for killing a homeless man for scourging around the garbage outside his house, as well as dealing with a crazed activist supporting the homeless. Meanwhile, Kuzak represents Abby when she agrees to testify before a grand jury seeking to indite her for money laundering. Brackman enlists Benny as a silent partner when he goes to interview Leo Hackett, a potentially new client. Hackett then introduces Benny to his retarded and withdrawn daughter, Alice, whom Benny develops a crush on. Rollins volunteers to help Diana with her divorce, and Roxanne has second thoughts about Becker's approach of handling her own divorce from Dave Meyer. Also, Kelsey can't overcome the pain of losing her newly-adopted baby daughter in the custody suit.
11 May 1989Victor represents the owner of a maligned Mexican brewery suing their American competitor who allegedly spread rumors of urine in their product. Meanwhile, Kuzak represents The Sensations, an old blues singing group, suing their younger counterparts, The New Sensations, over a new version of their music. Rollins allows his desire for Diana get in the way of representing her during her divorce. Dave Meyer, resenting his divorce, takes his anger out on Becker as the depositions get increasingly nasty, but ends on a positive note. Also, Abby makes a list of demands to McKenzie and Brackman when she's asked to return to the firm.
18 May 1989Grace prosecutes Pete Bostik, a Morton Downey-type TV talk show host accused of inciting his studio audience to kill a guest in the parking lot after his appearance on the show. Meanwhile, Allison prevails on a cold-stricken Victor to settle a dispute of a baby pig eaten by a pet python during a music video shoot. Leo Hackett worries over Benny's attention to Alice. At the end during an office party outing at a local restaurant, Kuzak and Grace break up by tentatively agreeing to resume a platonic relationship, and Kelsey announces that she's pregnant.
2 November 1989Victor represents a furrier against an animal rights group suing him for the death of many animals. Meanwhile, Leo Hackett insists on sterilization for Alice after learning that she and Benny are now sleeping together, which ends up diving the lawyers. Markowitz finds his day disrupted as he tries to make the firm's softball match and Kelsey's Lamaze class. Also, Abby returns full fold to the firm after Dorothy Wyler leaves.
9 November 1989Kuzak has to battle racial prejudice and too much media coverage as he tries to defend Earl Williams, a black college professor against charges that he murdered a white college co-ed who was his lover. Meanwhile, a domineering Grace earns the devotion of an insurance claims adjuster she is prosecuting for fraud, who gets turned on by S&M. Becker finds himself inspired in negotiation a settlement for his latest divorce client, Corrinne Hammond. Also, McKenzie asks Victor to give advice to Benny on the niceties of safe sex.
16 November 1989The Earl Williams murder trial continues as Kuzak tries to evaluate witnesses sympathetic to Earl Williams as the case draws to a close. But then, Kuzak makes the colossal mistake of putting Earl Williams on the witness stand where after Kuzak's gentle direct examination, the aggressive prosecutor, Margaret Flannigan, grills Williams about his past domestic abuse to provoke a violent reaction from him. Earl Williams' arrogant and defensive behavior on the witness stand dooms him to a quick conviction from the conservative and predominately white jury. Meanwhile, Becker tries to clear the air with Corrinne over his actions during her divorce and they get close fast while Becker is drawn to her eight-year-old daughter, Chloe. Rollins takes on an insurance company on behalf of an elderly lady and gets some help from Brackman. Also, McKenzie scares Diana during a law class when he disapproves of her dating co-workers, which includes Rollins.
23 November 1989Victor once again faces off against the crafty dwarf attorney, Hamilton Schuyler, who's the opposing council representing a nightclub owner where Victor's client brings a complaint to stop dwarf tossing contests at the club. Kuzak discovers a witness who may be able to clear Earl Williams, but has some complications when the witness, a convicted drug dealer, may not be reliable. Meanwhile, Kelsey feels pressure from many of her peers when she agrees to help a friend sue pro-life abortion activists who have been harassing abortion clinics. Also, Roxanne volunteers to help Markowitz who is planning to go to court on behalf of a dating service being sued by an dissatisfied woman customer.
