BFI Lff Review: The Road

The Road defeated me. It crushed and destroyed me. It broke my heart in the first fifteen minutes and spent the next hour and a half trampling it through the dead and dusty ground. It is a haunting and poetic work, soulful and subtle in its tone and the dark, elegiac cadences. Director John Hillcoat and screenwriter Joe Penhall have adapted Cormac McCarthy’s apocalyptic novel with a masterful touch and the result is incredibly powerful and moving.
The beginning is the end. With a soulful, almost sleepy, melody the films awakes to The Man and his Wife in their house. She is pregnant as is the mood, with a tangible anxiety. Then outside we hear the plumes of panic in the air, people screaming, unearthly lights and the Earth’s deep, portentous rumble. Glass Eye Pix and Dark Sky Films have announced that Kelly McGillis has joined the cast their apocalyptic vampire film Stake Land. Directed by Jim Mickle from a script he wrote with his Mulberry Street partner Nick Damici (who also co-stars), it’s currently lensing on New York and Pennsylvania locations.
McGillis, star of such ’80s classics as Witness, The Accused and Top Gun, plays “Sister,” a nun who confronts a crisis of faith when bloodsuckers take over the world, and joins a group of survivors battling the plague. “Jim and Nick have written a uniquely intense part for ‘Sister,’ and we are thrilled to see Kelly McGillis in the role,” says Dark Sky’s Greg Newman. “This is a very ambitious project, with a genuinely epic sweep, and we cannot wait to bring it to audiences next year.”

The best part about this unfettered access to Fangoria’s Files is being able to track down those films Academy Award Nominated directors would rather forget. Sure Peter Weir made us all tear up in front of our girlfriends with such films as Gallipoli, The Truman Show and Witness, but what kind of emotion was he trying to evoke with one of his earlier films, The Cars That Ate Paris from 1974?
The film was released in the Us as The Cars That Eat People. I guess they figured American audiences wouldn’t be that sympathetic to the French. It took me a good twenty minutes of viewing and language deciphering to realize that the Paris they were referring to was actually a small town in Australia. Producer Swanson Dies

Hollywood producer Ted Swanson has died from congestive heart failure, aged 72.
Swanson, who worked on a string of classic films including Rocky and Caddyshack, passed away on 23 July.
He enjoyed success on both radio and TV, as head of production with Los Angeles' Knxt (Kcbs) and as a producer on 1960s sitcom The Waltons and The Tale of Sweeney Todd, starring Ben Kingsley.
Swanson's credits as production manager include My Father the Hero, starring Gerard Depardieu and Katherine Heigl, and Oscar-winning films Harry and the Hendersons and Witness, starring Harrison Ford.
He is survived by his wife, Jan, two daughters and one son. »

Actor Rubes Dies

Veteran actor Jan Rubes has died, aged 89.
Rubes passed away on Tuesday. His cause of death was unknown as WENN went to press.
Born in Czechoslovakia, the star found fame in the 1940s as an opera singer and won first prize at the Geneva International Music Festival in 1948.
He furthered his career by moving to Canada before branching out into acting.
His most noted role was opposite Harrison Ford in 1985 film Witness, which was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won two.
Rubes was also a TV star, appearing in shows including The X-Files, Due South and Stargate Sg-1.
He is survived by wife Susan, two sons and three grandsons. »

Six Oscar nominations is a lot for anyone but what is perhaps even more impressive / serendipitous about Meryl Streep's 1985 accomplishment is that Out of Africa, a big hit and Oscar champ, was her third Best Picture winner in seven years. That's quite rare. She would go on to lose Best Actress to Geraldine Page who was, at that time, the most nominated performer (8) never to have won the golden boy (Peter O'Toole now holds the record since he lost on his 8th nomination). Page died a scant 15 months later at 62 years of age. »

Forbes 100: On Actresses and "Power"

As you may know, the annual Forbes 100 is out. This 'Celebrity 100' list is also referred to as "World's Most Powerful Celebrities". Which... well, I wonder. The list ranks the celebrities based on their media visibility and earning power. Media + income = power. All lists are subjective but it seems strange to assume that visibility equals power. It can but I doubt it automatically does. Is Lindsay Lohan a powerful person because the paparazzi follow her around? If so, what does she hold sway over... legging trends? Can she get movies greenlit? She didn't make the list but it's just an example.
Another funny/strange thing: It only goes to show you that becoming enormously popular at one time in history can keep you on these lists in perpetuity. Witness the staying power of Sandra Bullock and Harrison Ford on lists such as these.

McG has said that he cut a topless scene of Moon Bloodgood from Terminator Salvation because it felt "gratuitous" when he looked at it during the edit. The director revealed that the scene was originally inspired by a moment of tenderness in Witness starring Kelly McGillis and Harrison Ford, Si Fi Wire reports. Terminator Salvation director McG cut a "beautiful" topless shot of Moon Bloodgood out of the action blockbuster - even though the stunning actress was thrilled with the scene.
The Charlie's Angels director thought the shot would add a little tenderness and understanding about Bloodgood's character Blair Williams - but it just seemed out of place when McG was cutting the film together in the editing suite.
He tells WENN, "We tried to echo that scene in (film) Witness where Kelly McGillis turns around and says, 'I'm not ashamed. I know that I'm raised in a puritanical fashion and this is who I am but I trust you, Harrison Ford, so let's have a moment' - and they never even touch.
"We had a scene opposite Sam Worthington's character that sort of echoed that but it ended up feeling like, 'Here's the topless scene in a genre picture' - and it felt gratuitous.
"I didn't want people to have a reason to say, 'I can't take this film that seriously. They're still playing grab ass and the film's made by a bunch of teenagers who just want the boob shot.' So we ultimately left it out.
"Moon would be the first to say she thought it was beautiful. I mean one of the things that the Resistance (in the film) is fighting for is the softness of the flesh. It's the defining characteristic of the difference between us and machines." »

In the wake of having debunked the notion that he was under pressure to make the latest installment in the Terminator saga less of a bloodfest than perhaps it ought to be, esteemed film director McG recently came to the defense of the PG-13 rating. “It just became clear that the things that would take it to an R or an Nc-17 would be: There goes the arm, and now the blood is squirting on my face,” McG said in a group interview last Friday in Beverly Hills, Calif. “That wasn’t in service of the character or the story. A PG-13 rating for a Terminator movie. Does that make Any sense at all? Uh-oh.
“Terminator Salvation” director McG may have just awakened a very nervous and very cynical group of fans who feared the worst about this film from day one, when it is was first announced he was going to be in the hot seat. As the voice of reason though, I need to remind you (and myself) that we haven’t seen the film yet. It’s not out. We should definitely reserve judgement until we’ve seen the final product. But that doesn’t change the obvious fact that there is something seriously wrong with a PG-13 rating for a film that shouldn’t be anything less than an R if kept in line with it’s narrative.

A four minute extended trailer for Terminator Salvation has appeared online, courtesy of Apple. The extended sequence confirms the points I made yesterday about the film's plot, and features far more footage of Marcus.
Not only do we have this brilliant clip, but Terminator director has also addressed fans' disappointment over the PG-13 rating that the film has been given:
We shot an R movie, and at the end of the day we found that if we just cut back one shot of the Marcus character stabbing a screwdriver through the shoulder of one of these thugs it would warrant a PG-13. We thought, "Well, that would be ridiculous to make it tough for kids to go see this movie." We were inspired by The Dark Knight getting a PG-13 and being a film without any compromises. The Amish will not be pleased.
Not that The Amish ever saw Witness (1985) mind you. Maybe they don't even know who she is. But wasn't she good in that film as the Amish widow who resists falling for Harrison Ford for as long as she can? I still find it a bit odd that she didn't end up in the Best Supporting Actress list that year. Her chemistry with Harrison Ford was crazyhot. Further proof that it's ridiculous that people think gay actors can't pull off romantic leading roles.
But back to Kelly. If you're saying "who?" you're forgiven. She had a very high profile career for five short years (two Oscar winning films with one blockbuster sandwiched inbetween) and then *poof*. Hollywood lost interest... or she did... or the public did. It happens.
It happens a lot. We just never know who it's going to happen to until they're gone. »
