James Cameron's science-fiction epic trumps Robert Downey Jr.'s debut as Britain's number-one sleuth.

Despite his brilliant deductive reasoning and combat proficiency, Sherlock Holmes proved no match for the Na'vi of Pandora as James Cameron's "Avatar" won first place at the box office for the second weekend in a row. Still, victory wasn't entirely effortless for the 3-D science-fiction epic, as "Avatar" surrendered Wednesday night to the debut of "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" and also succumbed to "Sherlock Holmes" on Friday.
But a closer look at the numbers reveals that "Avatar" never had much to worry about, as the film lost to "Alvin" on Wednesday by a mere $2.4 million and an even smaller

In the season of goodwill, the superstar sent gifts to the residents of Kondanani orphanage, the former home of her adopted daughter Mercy James. Her youngest son David Banda also comes from small the African nation, where the 51-year-old has become a keen philanthropist. Mariah Carey lifted the spirits of 35 underprivileged children this holiday season — after renting out a recreation centre near her retreat in Aspen, Colorado for an extravagant party.
The Hero hitmaker hired jugglers, magicians and storytellers for the event where kids hailing from Denver were able to use the climbing wall, the pool and ice skating rink.

Christmas is supposed to be a time of giving, peace and good will towards men. But in Hollywood, its also a time for death, destruction and nearly every form of mayhem. For me, it was a toss-up between The Office and Modern Family this year. The Dundler-Mifflin Christmas party was sort of like Halloween in that the outfits were so festive they could have counted as costumes. Stanley the mailman's Christmas sweater was the best, though the Dunphys' knit-based monstrosities on Modern Family, issued on high via webcam from half of Fred Willard's face, were a bit louder. Don't miss this holiday greetings e-card from 20th Century Fox, featuring two executives posing as a Modern Family married couple along with confessionals from the real Mf cast.

And 2009 had some pretty big stinkers. From failed comedies, (what a shock that a Kate Hudson movie would make the list two years in a row) to failed action flicks to unwatchable "arthouse", 2009 served up a big ol plate of dog crap. So sit back, relax and see if you agree with any of my choices. Yes, I'm well aware that there are 500 million movies out there that went straight to DVD. I'm only listing theatrical releases. We may be a bit tired of cute movies in which dogs can talk, but that doesn’t mean the kids care.

The family features "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Mickey's Choo Choo Express" and "Handy Manny: Manny's Motorcycle Adventure" are currently available on DVD.
Both released on December 1 from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, the pair of children's specials contain material perfect for the holiday season.
"Mickey's Choo Choo Express" focuses on long-time Disney characters Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Donald and Daisy Duck and Goofy helping Professor Von Drake bring a new kind of snow that never melts down from Mistletoe Mountain. As they bring the spirit of winter to people in the middle of summer, they also meet Santa Claus and wife. Alternative rock band They Might Be Giants provide music.
The DVD also includes a bonus adventure with "Mickey's Big Job," in which everyone's favorite mouse agrees to help Willie the Giant while he's out of town, only to find that doing chores for a giant requires a lot of help.

"Chuck's" third season is just around the New Year's corner, but if you want to whet your espionage appetite before then, check out cable.
Syfy will air a special "Chuck" marathon on Thursday, Jan. 7, the NBC Universal cable network announced.
Eight hand-picked episodes, including the premiere and finale, will air.
The lineup also includes "Chuck vs. The First Date," "Chuck vs. The Seduction," "Chuck vs. The Break-Up," "Chuck vs. The Santa Claus," "Chuck vs. The Predator," "Chuck vs. The Dream Job," "Chuck vs. The Colonel" and "Chuck vs. The Ring."
The third season kicks off on Sunday, Jan. 10 on NBC.

Most Christmas specials are colorful and saccharine. That's not a bad thing, of course. It's brought us the wonders of Rudolph, the jolly ho-ho-ho of Santa Claus. But sometimes it's nice to have a sliver of darkness, something beyond Charles Dickens' ghostly look at the past, present, and future. The holidays are a time for memories. Memories of hot drinks and cold snowy nights, memories of family and friends coming together to experience the joys of the season, and memories of those magical moments as a child when you think you hear the rustle of Santa Claus as he slips down the chimney.

Movies set at Christmastime have been a long tradition; who can resist all that great imagery, lights, snow, Santa Claus, Christmas trees, wrapped presents, candy, stockings, etc.? (It even looks good in black-and-white.) But for every It's a Wonderful Life, there have been other movies with decidedly darker dealings, sometimes set directly in contrast with the bright holiday season.

'Security risk' Santa denied asylum entry

A leading expert on St Nicholas was reportedly forbidden from delivering children's presents at an asylum centre because of the security risk he posed. Guards at Yarl's Wood immigration removal centre in Bedfordshire called police after the Rev Canon James Rosenthal appeared dressed as Santa Claus and carrying £300 worth of gifts.
