Celebrate The Birthday Of The Ak-47 Inventor With These Fire-Powered Movie Moments

Today marks a joyful anniversary for action movie fans and a rather unpleasant one for gun control advocates. Exactly 90 years ago, Mikhail Kalashnikov, the man who invented the Ak-47 assault rifle, was born in a small Siberian village. If we can, though, let us put aside the Ak's bloody legacy on the battlefield and focus on all the badassery the weapon has unleashed on the big screen.

Whether they're battling Russians, trading in black market goods or bang-bang-banging their way through the city streets, movie characters have embraced the trusty Ak or later variants like the Akm or Sks. Conan Cameo For Dolph Lundgren?

The man responsible for the terror that was Captain Ivan Drago in Rocky IV and the joy that was He-Man in Masters of the Universe revealed to MTV that he’s in talks for an unnamed part in the upcoming Conan reboot.  Lundgren caught MTV New’s attention with this little ditty:

“I’ve talked to the producers about doing something for Conan”

As to whether anything was definite, the man went on to say:

“It’s too early”

Regarding a question about when he might know for sure, he responded:

“probably next year”

He-Man need not go on.

 

Lundgren will also be appearing in the upcoming Sly Stallone-directed mercenary flick, The Expendables, which has the same production team as Conan. He-Man can network.

The new Conan is to be directed by Marcus Nispel (who replaced Brett Ratner) and penned by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer.  Nispel helmed Friday the 13th »

Dolph Lundgren has said that an update to forthcoming film The Expendables could transpire. The Swedish actor signed on in November to reunite with his Rocky IV co-star Sylvester Stallone, who has written and directed the tale of an elite team sent to South America to overthrow a dictator. The 51-year-old explained that Stallone has not officially confirmed a follow-up, but he believes that audiences will want to see a sequel, Movie Web reports. The Expendables is shaping up to be the magnum opus of action movies, with nearly every current and former tough-guy actor and action superstar on board to tell the story of a group of "expendable" mercenaries who team up to overthrow an evil South American dictator. Written and directed by Sylvester Stallone, The Expendables has been described as Sly's answer to today's "soft" action heroes.

The action star directs this one-of-a-kind rock and roll hostage thriller

Dolph Lundgren has directed, maybe not the best film of the year, but certainly one of the coolest, strangest, funniest fuck-em-up hostage thrillers seen in (at least) the last five years. Not one to take himself or his image too seriously, Command Performance is a tour de force that proves the legendary muscle man (who first made his appearance known in Rocky IV as Russian boxer Ivan Drago) still has what it takes to decimate a room full of heavily armed bad guys. Its no lie when I say Command Performance is hands down the most fun you'll have with any action movie being released this year. It earns 2009's Mega-Awesome Achievement Award simply for having the balls to pull off many scenes like the one below:

What are Your Favorite Winter Holiday Themed Movies?

I wasn't quite sure how to properly word the headline for this post considering I want to make sure you understand I am talking about the season pretty much running from Thanksgiving to Christmas, but I also want to make sure you know the film itself doesn't have to necessarily be about the holidays.

Take Die Hard for instance, it's set during Christmas time, but it isn't a Christmas film. However, it fits in with what I am looking for here. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, Eyes Wide Shut, Fanny and Alexander, Batman Returns, Gremlins, The Thin Man and When Harry Met Sally are other examples. Hell, I would even say Rocky IV and Lethal Weapon count. As a matter of fact, I would say the non-Christmas, Christmas movies are the more interesting additions. How about The Shining or even Psycho?

Several sites are reporting that, according to an interview with Tele5 Germany, Sly Stallone wants to make a seventh Rocky movie. But can it make up for Rocky IV? Will it be better than Rocky IV? Doubtful, on both accounts. But what more could you ask for? Rocky Balboa was surprisingly solid, and the Rocky franchise is one of sports movies' greatest. Rocky Jumping Back in the Ring

I’m a huge fan of the Rocky movies. I have been since 3rd grade when I was home sick for a week and my dad decided to rent all five of the movies for me.

My personal favorite in the series is Rocky IV, in which Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky fights Dolph Lundgren’s intimidatingly droid-esque Communist. Seriously, it’s epic. Classic underdog story, coupled with an excellent montage bit.

Rocky V was an unfortunate follow-up to the fourth film, which Stallone himself even once rated 0 out of 10 in an interview.

Luckily, Stallone decided to add a sixth film to the franchise with Rocky Balboa which, while not amazing, was pretty decent and managed to redeem the series after Rocky V.

Now Stallone is ready to take Rocky Balboa back to the ring. After Stallone wraps up with Rambo 5 and The Expendables, he’s planning on tackling Rocky VII. »

Dolph Lundgren isn't the first name that springs to mind when you think "chemical engineer," is it? You might be surprised to know that the guy who has made a career out of playing muscular bad dudes in movies has a masters in that field from the University of Sydney, and he was also a Fulbright scholar to MIT. However, he dropped out after two weeks to pursue acting full time, and that's left us with his performances in everything from Rocky IV to The Punisher to Universal Soldier.

Three months after Michael Jackson's death, I'm still surprised by the passion of his fans. On Thursday, fans in Los Angeles began lining up for tickets to his concert documentary, This Is It -- the film doesn't open until Oct. 27, but tickets go on sale Sunday morning. I once invested a whole day in line for Rocky IV tickets, so I'm not about to tell anyone that these Michael Jackson fans are wasting their time. Our Favorite Montages: Rocky IV

Naturally, when asked to pick a favorite montage I had to be painfully obvious and choose Rocky IV. If I could program Star Trek Holodeck adventures for myself, one of them would totally be set in Hollywood's version of the Cold War, where it was better to be dead than red, and nuclear war was just five minutes away unless Stallone or Schwarzenegger stepped in. This is the culture that spawned characters like Marvel's Black Widow, and I too want to be an agent provocateur for one side or the other. Preferably Russian. They always had the cool black outfits.

That's why I dig the Rocky IV montage. It's steeped in images of what America firmly believed the Soviet Union to be -- a country of superior technology and gigantic athletes that could totally crush us. This is the stuff of my Reagan era childhood, when my teachers told us »

Before 1985, Dolph Lundgren was a name only known in martial arts circles from the numerous titles he won in karate. After his film debut in the James Bond film A View to a Kill, that same year Lundgren took audiences by storm with his powerful performance as Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, which catapulted his career. Lundgren still has a thirst for action, as you can see in his latest film, Direct Contact, which hits the shelves on DVD and Blu-ray on June 2. I had the chance to speak with Lundgren over the phone, and here's what he had to say about his new film, and much more.

The folks over at AICN got their hands on a photo of Sylvester Stallone and Dolph Lundgren taking a break on the New Orleans set of The Expendables.

You can check out the photo directly below, and for more from this set, head on over to AICN, where there are a number of unofficial behind-the-scenes shots.

It marks the first time the two have worked together on a film since Rocky IV.

In The Expendables, a group of mercenaries attempt to overthrow a South American dictator. The cast also includes Jason Statham, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Eric Roberts, Stone Cold Steve Austin and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The Expendables arrives in theaters April 23, 2010.

Earlier today I was editing Bethany's awesome Movies We Love entry in which she laid love all over Rocky IV -- which as you may know, singlehandedly ended the Cold War. Want to have your mind blown? Consider this -- Sylvester Stallone is currently working on directing and starring in The Expendables, quite possibly the most anticipated movie of 2010. Do you know who else is in this movie? Dolph Lundgren. Ivan "Death from Above" Drago himself. Anyway, now for something completely the same.
