Trinity Of Terrors: Know Your Spooksmodel

7 November 2009 10:33 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

So you've seen her picture in the magazine or just been to Fango's Trinity of Terrors in Vegas, and you wanna know who the beautiful girl in the tiara with the chainsaw is?

It's actress Shannon Lark, Fangoria Magazine's first official Spooksmodel. If you're curious as to how the plucky young performer landed this gig, or what duties that job entails, you're in luck, because here's where you get to Know Your Spooksmodel.

Pat Jankiewicz: Shannon, Is it true that when you became our Spooksmodel, you vowed to protect Fangoria from Enemies both foreign and domestic?

Shannon Lark: I did.

Pat Jankiewicz: How were you selected for this important job?

Shannon Lark: I participated in a contest where I danced onstage with a real chainsaw to Fergie's "London Bridges". They felt like I was the most crafty for the job, particularly with my expertise with handling Craftsman chain saws. »

50 Influential Scream Queens: Part 1

27 October 2009 5:54 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Given man's unwavering fascination with woman, it's no surprise that the female star acts as the anchor to a dominant portion of horror pictures. I mean really, who wants to see a bare chested man tearin ass through the woods screaming at the top of his lungs while a bladed assailant nips at his heels? I don't - I know that much, although I'm certain there are plenty of men who would disagree (and that's okay with me, to each his own!). The simple fact remains however, women bring a unique appeal and certain sensual atmosphere to film that no man ever could. And it's not all about gratuitous T&A.

There's a comforting quality in the hands of the heroine; a fascinating maternal strength that, as a man I cannot genuinely relate to. I can however admire, and in many cases it's nearly impossible to not admire the lone »

Lists of Doom XXX: Travis Miguel of Atreyu

26 October 2009 7:18 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

For those that like a little rock with their horror, it's time for another installment of Fangoria Musick's Lists Of Doom. This is the spot where we talk with some of your favorite bands to get their takes on the world of horror.

With their latest effort Congregation Of The Damned due in-stores tomorrow via Hollywood Records, we caught up with Atreyu guitarist Travis Miguel to get his thoughts on the films that scare him.

It's time for Lists Of Doom 30...

Cannibal Holocaust (1980) - Ruggero Deodato

"Cannibalism, chopping up turtles straight from the river, beating monkeys to death so they can feast on them, gratutious nudity, and rape....fun for the whole family!"

Zombie (1979) - Lucio Fulci

"The Lucio Fulci flick has one thing every other zombie movie never had - a shark, eating a zombie."

Fall Frights: Dagon (Film Review)

20 October 2009 12:56 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.

Originally published, 08/02/2002

Horror fans have suffered in recent years, either shelling out 10 bucks to sit through another unnecessary sequel to a dying franchise (Jason X, Halloween: Resurrection), or spending half of that to watch another unnecessary sequel in a franchise that never should have been (Children Of The Corn, Witchcraft) on video. But in this time of sequels and fodder, the team behind the cult hit Re-animator--producer Brian Yuzna, writer Dennis Paoli and director Stuart Gordon--has returned with another H.P. Lovecraft tale, Dagon. While not as memorable or outrageous as the former film, Dagon still manages to deliver enough shocks and laughs to please both die-hard Lovecraft buffs and those looking beyond titles with numbers after them.

Smash Cut to screen at the Trinity Of Terrors!

28 September 2009 3:05 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

The much-talked about H.G. Lewis-inspired Smash Cut has been added to our Fango Film Fest for the inaugural Fangoria Trinity Of Terrors taking place October 30 through November 1 at The Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas!

Able Whitman (David Hess - appearing at The Trinity!) is a horror-film director whose movies are panned by critics and audiences alike — until he starts killing people and using their body parts as props in his new flick.

Now, only intrepid Smash Cut. reporter April Carson (Sasha Grey) and celebrated private detective Isaac Beaumonde (Jesse Buck) stand between the demonic director and his unquenchable thirst for butchery at 24 frames per second!

Inspired by the career and filmography of Herschell Gordon Lewis, Smash Cut is a gore-splattered satire of the blood sport known as filmmaking.

This director's cut bleeds!

Smash Cut joins our Film Fest program which will be held in the Brenden Theatres inside the Palms Casino. »

DVD Review: ‘Fear Itself’ Has a Few Highlights, But More Lowlights

28 September 2009 3:02 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – I am an unabashed junkie of anthology horror shows and will gladly debate with you why “The Twilight Zone” is the best show of all time before we get to discussing “The Outer Limits,” “Amazing Stories,” and “Tales From the Crypt.” Naturally, I was a big fan of Showtime’s “Masters of Horror” and was intrigued when a lot of that series’ major players jumped to NBC for “Fear Itself”. The show was a ratings failure and got very little buzz and the first season DVD makes it clear why. Even for an anthology show fan, this is a tough sell.

DVD Rating: 2.0/5.0 “Fear Itself” features thirteen episodes that aired on NBC during the summer of 2008. Like “Masters of Horror” (both shows were produced by the legendary Mick Garris), each episode was directed by a different horror writer and director. And like “Moh” the quality jumps wildly from episode »

H.P. Lovecraft was the forefather of modern horror fiction, having inspired such writers as Stephen King, Robert Bloch and Neil Gaiman. The influence of his Cthulhu mythos can be seen in film ( Re-Animator , Hellboy , and Alien ), games ("The Call of Cthulhu" role playing enterprise), music (Metallica, Iron Maiden) and pop culture in general. But what led an Old World, xenophobic gentleman to create the Cthulhu Mythos, one of literature.s most far-reaching mythologies? What attracts even the minds of the 21st century to these stories of unspeakable abominations and cosmic gods? Having seen the show numerous times, Shock Till You Drop sat down to chat with Stuart Gordon about the surprise success of this stellar play. Robg.: What were the origins for the Nevermore play? From Beyond Re-animator: A Talk with Stuart Gordon

In preparation for a lengthy piece entitled The Frighteningly Profeminist Trilogy: Stuart Gordon’s Portrayal of 1980s Women and Capitalism in Re-Animator, From Beyond, and Dolls, James Morgart sat down with the filmmaker for a one-on-one interview.

Fangoria is pleased to present that conversation for you below.

Fangoria:   I’ve heard that while a student at the University of Wisconsin you formed Screw Theatre and performed a Peter Pan production that gained recognition and landed you in jail, I was wondering if you could elaborate on that a little bit?

Stuart Gordon (Sg):  Yes, it was 1968 and the same year as the Democratic convention in Chicago where the riots broke out and the police beat up and tear-gassed the protesters outside the convention.  My wife, Carolyn, and I were in the middle of that, and we got tear gassed and arrested.  So following the incident, I decided that maybe »

Greatest Scream Queens

Debbie Rochon, often described as a scream queen herself, wrote in an article originally published in Gc Magazine that "a true Scream Queen isn't The Perfect Woman. She's sexy, seductive, but most importantly 'attainable' to the average guy. Or so it would seem." Nastassja Kinski Films: To the Devil a Daughter (1976) [1] Cat People (1982) [2] The Day the World Ended (2001) [3] Inland Empire (2006) [4] Kinski will always be remembered for the iconic photograph shot by Richard Avedon (with a snake coiled around her body) and her role in Paul Schrader's (not so good) remake of Cat People. Needless to say, it was a hit at the box office and Kinski deservingly received a Saturn Award for Best Actress. Axelle Carolyn Talks Horror, Acting, Writing, and Journalism

26 August 2009 5:11 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

I first became acquainted with Axelle Carolyn when she authored an article in Fangoria magazine and I was struck by her unusual name. At first I thought she had just flipped her names (I wasn’t aware at the time that “Axelle” is a Belgian/French female given name) and was really Carolyn Axelle. But as time went by and I actually worked with Axelle on several projects (and discovered that “Axelle” is a real girl’s name), I became one of her biggest fans. She has done it all and she’s only 30 years old – respected journalist, talented actor, stunning model and now she is a published horror fiction author. I want to be her when I grow up.

Strangely, for all the collaborations she and I have worked on, I have never spoken to her. Everything via e-mail or messaging. The same now with my first in-depth interview »
