Although the screenplay was written by Japanese screen-writing partners Akira Kurosawa, Hideo Oguni, and Masato Ide, Ran was actually inspired by William Shakespeare's tragedy, King Lear, and is based on legends of the daimyo Mori Motonari.
Most likely, the jest was considered offensive because Saburo compares the two daughters to rabbits who are being led to slaughter. Obviously, one shouldn't say this in front of the fathers of these women!
