New Version of Old Alice in Wonderland Trailer Hits the Web

This new trailer for Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, presented by SpikeTV, doesn't deserve as much hype as it's getting because it's basically a remix or rehash of the original teaser trailer first put out in July. That said, since it technically is a brand new trailer, I'm featuring it anyway, especially because the hype for this movie is (or rather was in July) through the roof. I'll be much more excited once we get to see an actual full-length trailer with finished visual effects and a shot of Alan Rickman as the Caterpiller - that is what I need to make me go crazy with excitement for this new Alice in Wonderland. Visiting a friend in Omaha this past weekend, I saw The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T. at the lovely Film Streams theater. I'd never seen the one-and-only Dr. Seuss-scripted 1953 classic, and the spangly print certainly didn't disappoint. Mostly, though, it got me thinking about everything that's wrong with Where the Wild Things Are. Both are sui generis translations of maverick beloved children's authors to the screen in ways that could be "scary" or "inappropriate" for children. And there the similarities end.
Even among surreal, culty kid's films (Return to Oz is my favorite, but Babe: Pig in the City and Pee-Wee's Big Adventure come to mind as well), The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T. is singular. Pee-wee Herman's ballsy bid for a comeback launched last night with the debut of a Twitter feed (one lucky follower will receive a Picturephone call from Pee-wee today), and a visit to The Jay Leno Show that can only be described as strange -- just not the right variety of strange. The star of the brilliant Pee-wee's Big Adventure and equally brilliant children's show Pee-wee's Playhouse emerged in his gray plaid suit looking oddly of-the-moment -- Mr. Herman wouldn't be out of place strutting through the halls of Sterling Cooper assessing workplace productivity. »

In the two weeks it has existed, "The Jay Leno Show" has mostly been a study in stale stand-up and retread bits from Jay's run on "The Tonight Show." But so far his lineup of guests has been pretty interesting. He lucked into his conversation with Kanye West last week, and last night he welcomed another former MTV Vma star to his gigantic set: Pee-Wee Herman. Paul Reubens, the man inside Herman's head, has used the Pee-Wee character sparingly since his arrest for indecent exposure back in 1991, but he's bringing the persona back for a stage show in Los Angeles starting in November.

Pee-wee's Big Adventure is one of my all-time favorite movies. I don't care what embarrassments happened with Pee-Wee later in his career (and I'm referring to Big Top Pee-wee), I can go back to that movie at any time and still laugh hysterically. Paul Reubens plans to resurrect his Pee-wee Herman character for a live stage show, it has been reported. The 56-year-old actor will reportedly appear as his child-like alter ego for The Pee-wee Herman Show in Los Angeles in November. According to the Los Angeles Times, the performance is a reimagining of his 1980s theatrical production that was also a special for HBO in '81 and led to his '85 feature film debut Pee-wee's Big Adventure. The franchise also includes children's programme Pee-wee's Playhouse, which aired on CBS from 1986 to 1990. Actor Paul Reubens is bringing his trademark character, Pee-wee Herman, and his playhouse full of friends back to their roots. Unfortunately, unless you live in Southern California, you may not be able to see them.
The Pee-wee Herman Show was a Los Angeles stage show in the early 1980s. It resembled the Saturday morning kids show that followed but the original concept was more of an adult parody of classic children's programming. Following appearances on late-night TV, Reubens' Pee-wee character became so popular that he was given his own family-friendly feature film, Pee-wee's Big Adventure.
The success of the movie paved the way for the Pee-wee's Playhouse TV series. Budgeted at $325,000 an episode, the show garnered 22 Emmy Awards during its five year run. There were plenty of responses to last week's Tim Burton poll, and in the end it was Ed Wood that just barely beat out Edward Scissorhands to take the top spot as his finest work to date. I can certainly understand how many would rank these two the highest, followed by Beetlejuice, although I do think Pee-wee's Big Adventure is a little underrated here. And as much as I expected to see Mars Attacks down at the bottom, I was hoping a few more supporters might come out of the woodwork. Even though this teaser trailer leaked out early yesterday, Disney has put out the official, improved version today via The Mad Hatter's Facebook page. Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland stars Mia Wasikowska as Alice as well as Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, Anne Hathaway, Michael Sheen, Stephen Fry, and many more talented actors. As I said yesterday, I'm not exactly that fond of the look of this, but maybe I just needed to see it in high quality (and I also saw this in 3D earlier today and it looked great). Even if you've already seen the leaked version, I suggest you check this out again, as it's refreshing to see it in high quality. As I was heading out to get some lunch today, I got an email alerting me that IGN had accidentally posted the teaser trailer for Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland early. It was an accident, as Disney had alerted us yesterday that the trailer wouldn't be online until tomorrow afternoon in connection with their Facebook promo. Of course, IGN smartened up and removed the trailer, but our friends at TrailerAddict still have it up. So if you're anxious to check this out early, drop off every and watch it below. It looks very magical, very whimsical, and very much a fantastical adventure. Though I'm worried not everyone will like what they see.
