Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: October 11, 2009

11 October 2009 11:37 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

This week:

Vince Vaughn Retreats to the top of the box office; another comic book adaptation makes it way up the Gravel road to the big screen; Michael Bay kills The Texas Chainsaw Massacre; Ryan Reynolds hitches a ride with Motorcade and New Line needs a Vacation - but will Chevy Chase be invited?

Box Office

Swingers duo Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau landed in the top spot with Couples Retreat. The comedy snatched an impressive $35 million from movie-goers despite bad reviews.

Woody Harrelson had to settle for second place with Zombieland. The horror-comedy took $15 million from Friday to Monday, dropping a decent 39%  - it looks like the film has a chance of hitting $100 million.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs banked another $12 million for third place. With $96 million in the bank it looks like Meatballs are going to be the order of the day.

Toy Stories 1 and 2 in 3D were fourth with another $7.5 million. »

Harold Faltermeyer to Score Kevin Smith's 'Dicks'?

8 October 2009 8:45 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Everything about Kevin Smith's A Couple of Dicks sounds too good to be true. How can you not look forward to a movie that promises to be a throwback to the glory days of 1980s buddy cop comedies and the next Roadhouse? It even lured in Bruce Willis, and if you can bring back The Last Boy Scout side of him, your job is half done. But the film might just score an extra point of goodness: Empire caught up with Smith who revealed that 1980s soundtrack-meister Harold Faltermeyer might be lending his steely sound to Dicks.

"As I'm putting the flick together, I see it as a real throwback to the 80s buddy cop genre," said Smith. "So I'm putting some music on this scene, see if it works. I take this piece from Fletch, which I've always loved, and it works. Now I take this piece of music from Beverly Hills Cop, »

Chase Stunned By Good Reviews

7 October 2009 6:31 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Chevy Chase is stunned that critics have warmed to his new U.S. TV comedy Community - because his career has been ravaged by bad reviews.

The Fletch star has won over audiences and pundits alike in the series, playing a lawyer who is forced to attend a community college.

Chase has shied away from reading reviews in the past; but now that his new series has been given the thumbs up from critics, the funnyman admits he's starting to pay attention.

He says, "I do (read reviews) now. I don't believe I've ever had a good review, through all 50 movies, or whatever it was.

"I've always had bad reviews, I think partially because I don't know what I'm doing. I don't know why but suddenly I got some good reviews here, so I'll take (them)." »

Chevy Chase Could Return To Fletch Role

7 October 2009 12:01 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Comedy legend Chevy Chase has hinted he's set to return to the big screen in one of his most famous movie roles - playing Fletch in a forthcoming sequel.

Chase played the womanising journalist in two movies in the 1980s, based on the books of author Gregory McDonald.

Studio bosses have been trying to take McDonald's novel Fletch Won to the big screen for more than a decade with a number of directors including Kevin Smith linked to the film, and several actors including John Cusack, Zach Braff, Jason Lee and Ryan Reynolds considered to fill the role made famous by Chase.

But the veteran funnyman has hinted he's in talks to reclaim the role he made famous, at the age of 65.

Chase, currently starring in sitcom Community, reveals, "Fletch was one of my favourites. I would love to do another Fletch, and that's actually a possibility." »

Josh Wolk's Pop Culture Club talks 'Vacation': Does it make you yearn for (or dread) Chevy Chase's return?

27 August 2009 7:30 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

What with August coming to an end and the looming arrival of Labor Day—the symbolic slamming shut of summertime fun (here's one more barbecue, Now Get Off The Beach And Back To School, You Lazy Bastards!)—I thought that this week would be a good time for the Pop Culture Club to take one last symbolic vacation…with the Griswolds. (Though neither a Vegas nor European vacation, because as we all know, those are no fun at all.) But the 1983 comedy Vacation served as more than just a seasonal dose of nostalgia (and homage to its late writer, John Hughes). It also got me thinking about the legacy—and upcoming TV return—of Chevy Chase. Chevy is considered one of the most memorable film comedy stars of the ‘80s. But take a look at his filmography: He really only starred in three and a half funny movies: Vacation, Caddyshack, »

This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: June 2, 2009

DVD Links: DVD News | Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed Revolutionary Road I'm not exactly excited about any of the selections this week and as anxious as I was to see this movie last year, it ultimately disappointed me. The best way to describe this film would be to say it is just there. I got nothing from it. The book, however, I certainly recommend you read, although, like the film, it too is a bit of a downer, but at least it is brilliantly written. Defiance It is no wonder Paramount Home Video is offering a special deal if you buy Defiance and Revolutionary Road since both films are right there in the luke warm middle of the road. I will give Defiance credit for interesting me just slightly more than Rr, but by the time I was supposed to review it last year I didn't even make the effort. »

The summer season is now well and truly here. Pixar’s Up shows that family films and the Pixar brand are hugely profitable. The animated film banked a huge $68 million over the weekend. For a film that sells most of it’s tickets in half price matinees that’s a lot of attendance.

Last week’s champion Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian had to settle for the runner up spot with a weekend take of $25 million. With »

Chevy Chases 'Hot Tub' and Maybe More 'Fletch'?

30 May 2009 12:01 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Perhaps Chevy Chase thought he was actually going back to 1987 when he signed up, but the comedian and five-week-tenured talk show host is jumping in the Hot Tub Time Machine , alongside John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Lizzy Caplan, and Craig Robinson.

Chase would play the Don Knotts role in Pleasantville, the old handman dishing out advice as Cusack and his friends transport from the here and now back to the there and then. Could be a funny flick, could be just awful. »

Chevy Chase Gets in ‘Time Machine’, Plans Visit to ‘Fletch’

29 May 2009 9:37 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

It's hard to say when Chevy Chase was last funny on the silver screen. He's had a few moments, mostly on the popular geek property Chuck, on the small tube, but he hasn't really done much in the way of cinematic hilarity since well, the nineties. But all that might possibly not really change in the near future, as Chase is eying several projects on the horizon that may give him a little lift back into the world of being funny. Up first, according to THR, is the Steve Pink-directed time-travel comedy Hot Tub Time Machine, which follows a group of unsatisfied guys who get thrown back to their younger days in 1987 via their jacuzzi. Chase will play a mysterious repairman who dispenses pearls of wisdom and may or may not be behind the metaphysical road trip. Wait a second, spoiler alert? I don't know if you've seen Christopher Walken in Click or not, but »

Chevy Chase Hops In The Hot Tub

29 May 2009 8:42 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Remember in Click when Christopher Walken popped up in a weird role as the Bed, Bath and Beyond salesman who gives Adam Sandler the magical remote? Apparently Chevy Chase admired that part so much he's found a similar one for himself. Chase has joined the cast of the time-traveling comedy Hot Tub Time Machine and will play a mysterious repairman who might be the reason four 30-something guys travel back to their high school glory days. THR pains the casting as kind of a resurgence for the actor, who recently did a guest stint on Chuck and has apparently agreed to be part of the planned revival of Fletch, the character he immortalized in the 80s. It still seems up for debate whether any of these roles are worthy of Chase's talents-- he's Clark Griswold, for God's sake! But really, we can probably just be grateful for seeing him at »

Chevy Chase to Return for Fletch Sequel?

29 May 2009 8:30 AM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

Chevy Chase is making a bit of a comeback, by starring in NBC's new series "Community," appearing on "Chuck" and being cast in the upcoming "Hot Tub Time Machine" comedy alongside John Cusack and Robb Corddry. But he is also considering a new script that would see him reprise his role as investigative reporter Irwin "Fletch" Fletcher. A relaunch of the "Fletch" franchise has been in the works for years, with the current screenplay's approach passing the baton to Fletch's journalist nephew as the semi-retired uncle advises him on his stories. "Fletch Won" was announced back in 2006 with Zack Braff attached to star and "Scrubs" creator Bill Lawrence attached to direct. Then a scheduling conflict made Braff abandon the project, which caused it to be put on hold. Some of the other actor/director combinations have been Kevin Smith/Jason Lee and Steve Pink/Joshua Jackson. At a risk »

If so you may be interested in catching Fletch on Blu-ray next week or you may be interested to know he has just joined the cast of Hot Tub Time Machine for director Steve Pink and United Artists. Chase joins a cast top-lined by John Cusack and Rob Corddry in a film that follows a bunch of unsatisfied guys who get thrown back to their younger days in 1987 via their Jacuzzi. The film is shooting in Vancouver and is scheduled for a February 26, 2010 release. Jay A. Most are pretty good and some are great. Pick your favorite and give it to your Blu-Ray pop.

"Fletch" - Blu-ray review. A comedy classic butchered by its features.

12 May 2009 | Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news »

Fletch” – The Blu-ray reviewby Peter Dimako ____________________________________________ “Fletch” brings back ‘80s comedy and it’s still damned funny. Based on the novel by Gregory McDonald, Irwin “Fletch” Fletcher is as ‘80s in comedy as “Beverly Hills Cop” is in the action genre. Played to comedic-perfection by Chevy Chase, Fletcher is a top dog newspaper reporter who uses any and all of his diverse means to get the story. He’s been bumming it on a California beach, working to expose a drug trade run by Fat Sam (George Wendt) and basically loafing around for the most part. He pretty much has his story-thirsty editor Frank Walker (Richard Libertini) in the palm of his hand. While on assignment, he’s approached by the suit-wearing Alan Stanwyk (Tim Matheson) who lures him back to his place with $1000 and pops him with a strange and intriguing proposition. Stanwyk wants Fletch to murder him, apparently »
