In the early 80’s NYC cultural lull between Patti Smith’s retirement and Jay McInerney’s breakout, Nyu film school graduate Susan Seidelman did the scrappy shoestring indie film thing, resulting in her acclaimed feature debut Smithereens (1982).

Best known for her hit sophomore effort, Desperately Seeking Susan (1985), Seidelman continues to direct movies and TV shows featuring female protagonists… including the pilot for “Sex and the City” and her Oscar nominated short film The Dutch Master (1994), about a shy dental technician who ventures “into” a museum painting for flights of erotic fantasy.

Sometimes thought of as the raw blueprint for her cult-beloved second film Desperately Seeking Susan, director Susan Seidelman's 1982 feature debut Smithereens [reviewed here by Erin Donovan] epitomizes the grungy spiritedness of downtown NYC in the post-punk era. Self-deluded but aggressively independent, working-class New Jersey scenester Wren (Susan Berman) meets Montana runaway Paul (Brad Rijn) in the city, and moves into his pad—a van in a parking lot. He's into her, but she's superficially eyeing both stardom and up-and-coming rocker Eric (punk icon Richard Hell). Streep Noms, #6 (1985)

A Note: I will be returning to reviewing Streep movies soon but for now let's return to discussing Streep's competitive Oscar fields. I'll try to wrap up the 80s pictures very soon. I knew this month would be Streep heavy I had no idea how mired down in the 80s nostalgia we'd get. See also: Farrah & Michael Jackson.

Six Oscar nominations is a lot for anyone but what is perhaps even more impressive / serendipitous about Meryl Streep's 1985 accomplishment is that Out of Africa, a big hit and Oscar champ, was her third Best Picture winner in seven years. That's quite rare. She would go on to lose Best Actress to Geraldine Page who was, at that time, the most nominated performer (8) never to have won the golden boy (Peter O'Toole now holds the record since he lost on his 8th nomination). Page died a scant 15 months later at 62 years of age. »

A friend of mine kept saying that the new photos of Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter reminded him of none other than Madonna. So, he followed up with morphthinged evidence to prove his theory...

Hmmm, musta been that endearing gap tooth that tipped him off. Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland Madonna in Wonderland coming to theaters... never.

Come to think of it... maybe this was Madonna's problem with the acting side career in the the late 80s and early 90s. She needed to be doing small bits in weirdo movies like Alice... She kept trying to play characters that any actress might essay when an outsized offscreen celebrity persona actually requires a larger-than-life / fantastical character to contain it -- in the absence of a true acting gift, that is, which only rare pop stars (Cher and, hmmm, Sting? Miami International Film Festival Hosts "A Conversation" With Director Susan Seidelman

Susan Seidelman has directed Miami-set films such as "The Boynton Beach Bereavement Club" and now she'll join the Miami International Film Festival for a special night with "A Conversation with Susan Seidelman." The free seminar will take place Tuesday, February 10th at the Art Center/South Florida Gallery on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach.

Seidelman will be on hand to discuss her film career of over two decades. Her 1982 film "Smithereens" was the first American independent film to be selected for the Cannes Film Festival. She then went on to direct the hit Madonna-starrer "Desperately Seeking Susan" and the Meryl Streep comedy "She-Devil."

Seidelman has also directed episodes of "Sex & the City", including "The Baby Shower." She recently joined the Miami Filmmaker Project Advisory Board.
