If censorship groups would just SHUT UP, no one would care about films like this.
The whining from the parent groups just made more people (like me) want to see this. It's not bad mind you, but not that good either.
Santa as a slasher. There's your plot.
Some of the creepiness came from the whole idea of a children's icon being a killer. I can see why there was controversy. The back-story was a bit predictable too.
I'm no religious type, but did you ever notice how many repressed. punishment happy, nuns there are in horror films? As a film, it's not bad. The Santa angle added fear. But the best part about it were the puns and tag lines.
