Today is Veteran's Day. It is a time when we step back for a moment to honor the bravery and sacrifices of our nation's soldiers. Men and women who give everything, up to and including their lives, all in the name of protecting this country and all that it represents. Also known as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day in other parts of the world, the holiday always falls on November 11, commemorating the anniversary of the 1918 armistice that brought an end to World War I.
The history of film is rife with stories pulled straight from the front lines. War stories make great cinema, both because they serve up gripping tales of heroism and because they honor those who take on such acts in the real world. So today, in honor of the veterans from wars past and wars ongoing, we give you this small selection of classics to spend some time with. »

When you scrape away the death obsessed subtext and technicalities of the process, watching and loving horror films should be just plain fun, exhilarating fun, a complete escape into another parallel world that echoes our own. If it's not, if you find yourself labouring to find that simple joyous eye of the proverbial needle, well then, perhaps you should just give up the pursuit of terror geekdome altogether.
For me, speaking as someone who was literally born into a world where the people that done made me loved dark movies and weird entertainments and fully endorsed my obsessions with my growing "id", horror films will forever be tied to the sweetest moments of my youth. From those secret late night, school night, TV movie binges to sneaking into R rated films after buying PG tickets, horror was my first rebellion against the mainstream so embraced by my peers and the »

Ever since a live-action, 3D Yogi Bear movie was announced back in February this year, there hasn’t really been any movement on the news front regarding it. However, fast forward to now and we may have our main cast in the form of Dan Aykroyd, Anna Faris and Justin Timberlake.
Aykroyd is in negotiations to voice the titular character in Yogi Bear, with Faris set to play a nature documentarian who follows the antics of Yogi in the fictional Jellystone Park. Timberlake is also in talks to join the project, possibly playing Yogi’s sidekick, Boo-Boo. The film is being directed by Eric Brevig (Journey To The Center of the Earth), and produced by Donald De Line and Karen Rosenfelt as a live-action/CGI hybrid in the vein of Alvin and the Chipmunks and Garfield (aim high, why don’t you?).

Okay, so it's not news on a Ghostbusters reunion, but it's still pretty cool. Dan Aykroyd will join Simon Pegg and David Tennant in the upcoming Burke & Hare, which is being directed by John Landis. Aykroyd's role is not known as of yet. Oh, and Bill Nighy has been cast as well. I guess that bit of information flew under the radar. This is really starting to shape up to be something to look forward too. Given, the project had me at the team up of Pegg and Tennant, but now I'm really... »

While I definitely acknowledge that Easy Rider is a classic film, that doesn't mean I think it's very good. Confusing? Perhaps, but it doesn't have to be.
To me, a "classic" is anything that stands the test of time and remains enjoyable after many years or that made a significant impact upon the genre. I'd argue that Rider doesn't qualify in the former category but that it certainly meets the latter criteria. When I watched the original DVD, it was the third time I saw Easy Rider. I first viewed it on VHS about 15 years earlier and I absolutely loathed it. Since I didn't really experience the Sixties firsthand - I only lived through two and a half years of that decade, so for some strange reason, my memories of it remain few - I have to rely on the media's depictions to give me knowledge of it. Want to know why Sigourney Weaver has the comedic ability to do a great job in movies like Ghostbusters or Galaxy Quest? Or why John C. Reilly cracked you up so darn well in Step Brothers?
Take a look at Ang Lee’s The Ice Storm or the highly underappreciated Criminal. These guys have the acting chops to pull off drama effortlessly, and like the best comedic actors, have an understanding of every bit of the craft.
This is why I’m so excited for Miguel Arteta’s (Youth in Revolt) new film Cedar Rapids, which has added Weaver and Reilly to the cast alongside Alia Shawkat, The Office’s Ed Helms, and Anne Heche.
Rapids, developed by Helms and Phil Johnston (Flightless Birds), the film will “center on a wholesome and naive small-town Wisconsin man (Helms) who, when his role model dies, must represent his company at a regional insurance conference in Cedar Rapids, »

I knew "Ghostbusters 3" has been a possibility for awhile now, but I didn't realize just how close it was to actually being made. Original actor Dan Aykroyd gave a few updates on the film. He announced that writers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg are currently "hacking out a first draft". He also stated that Sony is enthusiastic about the project. While the film is closer to production than ever, Aykroyd assured fans that the project was far from a go. Oh well. At least the there's actually a script being written. The script is always a means there's a greater possibility that a movie is going to happen. I loved the original "Ghostbusters", but the sequel was kind of lame in my opinion. Here's to hoping the third is as good as the first!

First off I need to apologize for the tardiness of this entry. I was infected with the swine pandemic and was unable to do anything but utter “Bbbbraaaiiinsssss…” feebly from my bed. Now I’m up and about again, so here we go.
One of the first things to do when making your movie is figure out who your main character is going to be. Now, you may pick your plot first and then figure what kind of protagonist you want or you may pick your characters and write about what they do – it all depends on your style of writing. In either case, understanding your protagonist(s) is very important since these are the people whom the plot revolves around, who we will come to know and love and who we will follow for the next 120 minutes. They will be our tour guides through your movie so you have »

While the brand new movie Paranormal Activity is, er, knocking 'em dead at the box office, other ghostly spirits have been haunting us for centuries - and not all of them should be welcomed with open arms, according to experts. Appearing on a special Halloween edition of CNN's Larry King Live Friday, a host of ghosthunters, paranormal activists and psychics - as well as ghost victim Joan Rivers and Ghostbusters star Dan Aykroyd and his séance authority father, Peter Aykroyd - debunked the disbelievers, often with jaw-dropping stories. Rivers delivered a seriously convincing account about how a malicious spirit was »

Back in April we reported on news from the Sony ShoWest presentation that the studio was developing a script for a third Men in Black movie, something which built on the rumors from over a year ago that franchise stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones were interested in suiting up for some alien escapades once more. Fast forward to now and an update has come out that Men In Black 3 has found its writer in the form of Tropic Thunder screenwriter, Etan Cohen (not to be confused with one half of the famous Coen brothers, Ethan).
Variety is reporting that Columbia Pictures (which Sony owns) has tapped Cohen to pen the script, but beyond that no deals have been made for either Smith or Jones to reprise their roles. Although I’d be very surprised if the studio didn’t have talks going on with the two stars »

After this week's somewhat disappointing episode of Modern Family, it was nice to know Community had an episode lined up to make up for it. Similar to the rest of network television, Community had a Halloween-themed episode in the clever veil of a "Dias de los Muertos" party.
The party was put on by Annie for extra credit for the first time in Glendale history. So what made the episode so fantastic? Was it Jeff pursuing his Statistics professor? Pierce running around in a Beast Master costume on a bad trip? Shirley dressed up as Harry Potter exacting revenge?
As funny as those plot lines were (and you can read all about them in our "Introduction to Statistics" recap), it was actually Abed dressed as Batman in the background that won us over. Abed did a Christian Bale deep voice as he lurked in the shadows until he came in »

Despite what some members of the Ghostbusters 3 production crew may tell you, not everyone has been invited back to the highly anticipated project.
“Nobody has called me. It’s not like I’ve been hard to find either,” said Skeleton Cabbie. “I’ve reached out to Ivan [Reitman] and I even left a voicemail for Harold [Ramis] but so far nobody has called me back. It’s hard not to feel sad about this. We all had a great time when we filmed [Ghostbusters].”
Skeleton Cabbie played himself in the hugely successful 1984 film Ghostbusters. Starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson, the film spawned a cartoon, video games, a popular line of toys and a sequel in 1989.
“Wow, the stories I could tell you about Bill [Murray]. One time on set he showed up with this Russian chick and the two…well, I won’t go into it. You’ll just have to read my book, »

Sony Pictures has tapped Tropic Thunder scribe Etan Cohen to pen the script for the third installment of Men in Black.
Cohen is midway through the first draft of the film. No word on any possible plot points but the script is believed to include aliens, cool gadgets and smart-looking suits with somebody getting slimmed.
Director of the first two Men in Black films, Barry Sonnenfeld, will return to helm the third chapter.
Original stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones have yet to formally sign on to the project. If demands are met and large sacks of cash are quickly exchanged in a dark alley, Men in Black 3 could begin production as early as next spring. Both actors are reportedly waiting to see a finished script.
Let’s be clear. This project has more to do with Will Smith than Tommy Lee Jones. If Smith doesn’t come back to the series, »

It's no coincidence that on the weekend of Halloween (arguably the scariest of the holidays — save for Groundhog Day) mtvU is airing their Ulalume Music Festival special featuring AFI, Kid Cudi, Dead By Sunrise and Paramore. The show, whose name comes from an Edgar Allan Poe poem, is a showcase of artists who embrace the dark aesthetic and supply the perfect soundtrack for Halloween night.
During the fest, MTV News caught up with the Nashville natives Paramore and asked about some of their favorite Halloween costumes and memories. After all, they did write that song for "Twilight," so they should be experts of all things macabre, right?
"One time someone made me a Casper costume because 'Casper' was my favorite movie," Paramore singer Hayley Williams shared. »

Recently, Dan Aykroyd talked about the progress of Ghostbusters 3, and while he sounded relatively measured, his words offered hope for longtime fans of the franchise.
Aykroyd was a guest on Wednesday of Coast to Coast Am with George Noory, where he promoted his father Peter’s new book "A History of Ghosts: The True Story of Seances, Mediums, Ghosts, and Ghostbusters". Meanwhile, with regards to Ghostbusters 3, IGN reports the actor said it’s still far from a go, but that Sony is enthusiastic about it.
Screenwriters Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg are in the midst of "hacking out a first draft," Aykroyd told Noory. He added that the sequel seems closer to being a reality than it’s ever been, and that both cast and studio are eager to finally make it happen.
If there is any reason to be cautiously optimistic, it’s that Harold Ramis, who would be »

I imagine you're as sick of I am of hearing various rumors about Ghostbusters 3 from the stars of the original film, none of whom can seem to agree with each other on whether or not the script is any good or even if the movie will happen. In one corner we've got cranky Bill Murray, who two weeks ago claimed there wasn't a script at all. In the other we have cheerleader Dan Aykroyd, who gets asked about the movie everywhere he goes and usually responds with something optimistic about the script or the idea to include new Ghostbusters. So score one in the "optimism" column, as Aykroyd ran into reporters from New York Magazine and told them that Bill Murray in fact likes the script. And as for actually getting the movie made, "I think we're closer than we've ever been. Two years ago, I would've said there was »

The New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies aren't exactly the fiercest of rivals, but there is sure to be blood — or maybe just some home runs, botched calls and heated arguments with umpires — when the two baseball teams collide for Game 1 of the World Series this evening (so long as the rain stays away that is!).
As New Yorkers and Philadelphians prepare for battle, we got to wondering about some of the other rivalries already in place between the two cities — in motion picture form, that is. I'm not necessarily talking about fictional competitions between NYC and Philly, so much as stacking movies set in those cities against one another.
Through that framework, you'd be surprised at how many competing movies there are between the Empire and Keystone States — just hit the jump and see the head-to-head match-ups for yourself!
