If you are a fan of the original Children of the Corn, then I'm sure you remember the excellent soundtrack score composed by Jonatahn Elias. Through the years, Jonathan has paved his way in the world of music creating memorable themes and compositions to films such as Vamp, Pathfinder, and is responsible for some of the most recognizable jingles in entertainment history (Yahoo! yodle anyone?). Recently, our friend, Soundtrack Examiner Mark Morton, hosted an exclusive interview with Jonathan which you can read here or visit www.examiner.com/x-12873-Soundtracks-Examiner for Mark's full line of horror composer interviews and soundtrack reviews. »

Syfy has become known not just for cheesy sci-fi and horror flicks but also remakes, or "reimaginings," of several classic films and shows. They had Children of the Corn recently, they had Tin Man (a modern take on The Wizard of Oz), and they have an Alien Nation remake in the works (not to mention Quantum Leap).
They're also doing Alice, which is their take on Alice in Wonderland. Here's the trailer. It premieres December 6.

Is there an Icons of Fright follower out there who doesn't appreciate some of Stephen King's works? One of the true Icons, King has just published his newest short story "Premium Harmony" in the New Yorker, to whet his Constant Readers' appetite in anticipation of his new novel, Under the Dome.
Though "Premium Harmony" has echoes of his short story "Children of the Corn," marks a long-awaited return to Castle Rock (he abandoned the town in 1992's short story collection Nightmares & Dreamscapes) and makes a sly reference to Derry, Me's favorite clown Pennywise, it's not a horror story. As with many of the tales from his last two collections, it's a non-genre story that lacks any notion of the supernatural. For what it's worth, it's a good story; I just have my biases toward vampires and other preternatural creatures.

Allow me to bust out the old adage “you can’t polish a turd”. Or can you? You could add six hours of footage to Rob Zombie’s Halloween II, and it would still be 2009’s most unwatchable movie, but hey, that's just my opinion. And yes, I say this as a man who endured the Syfy remake of Children of the Corn this weekend.
Today Zombie announced on his Twitter page that his director's cut is done, stating it will be ”very different than the theatrical version.”
Great.
In a previous interview with Icons of Fright, Rob talked about how the director’s cut focused on a very “fucked up” Laurie. More than what we got? Wow, where do I sign up? I tell ya, I did a double feature of the original Halloween and Halloween II this weekend, and it was a fantastic palate cleanser. I’m in »

In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.
Originally published, 08/02/2002
Horror fans have suffered in recent years, either shelling out 10 bucks to sit through another unnecessary sequel to a dying franchise (Jason X, Halloween: Resurrection), or spending half of that to watch another unnecessary sequel in a franchise that never should have been (Children Of The Corn, Witchcraft) on video. But in this time of sequels and fodder, the team behind the cult hit Re-animator--producer Brian Yuzna, writer Dennis Paoli and director Stuart Gordon--has returned with another H.P. Lovecraft tale, Dagon. While not as memorable or outrageous as the former film, Dagon still manages to deliver enough shocks and laughs to please both die-hard Lovecraft buffs and those looking beyond titles with numbers after them.

I wanted to hate this movie, I really did; in fact, the first thing I did before I even watched the thing was brainstorm some high-larious jokes regarding the hokey tag line, which solemnly reads, "You brought them into this world...they'll take you out." How pleased I was with myself, chuckling quietly as I armed myself with a veritable battalion of besmirching, scathingly funny material. What a fool I was. All of that haughty posturing quickly slipped away after I got about half an hour into the film and was promptly Drop-kicked In The Face With Nausea-inducing Terror.
We're all familiar with the concept of creepy killer kids. It's done entirely too often (Joshua, The Good Son, Orphan, Children of the Corn, Village of the Damned) and only rarely is it done well (The Bad Seed, The Omen, Pet Sematary). Luckily, The Children manages to hold up amongst the best, »

Donald P. Borchers produced the original Children of the Corn and in later years wasn.t very happy with it. He decided to return to corn country and redo the Stephen King short story. Sometimes .He who walks behind the rows. should just stay behind the rows. In 1975, bickering married couple Burt (David Anders) and Vicky (Kandyse McClure) are heading for divorce. That.s pretty obvious from their fighting, but at the moment they.re also heading through Nebraska corn country. They hit a child on the back roads, but it appears that the young boy had his throat slit before he stumbled into the road. They put the body in their trunk and head for the nearest town, Gatlin. »

"It happened everywhere in Gatlin that day. That's when Sarah started drawing these pictures...."
If you are a fan of Children of the Corn, then you definitely remember this line as it gave light to the horror that was unfolding in the rural, midwest town of Gatlin, Nebraska. As the town's future was foretold by a child's artisitic hand, what many may not know is that the drawings were, in fact, not drawn by a "child" at all. In actuality, the creative task of creating Sarah's visions was given to illustrator Judeanne Winter Wiley. We recently caught up with Judeanne who took the time to talk with us about Stephen King, daytime drawing and surprising friends.
Cotcm - Before we begin, we would like to thank you Judeanne for taking the time talking with us and the fans about your involvement and insights into the production and creation of the original, »

Children of The Corn Directed by Donald P. Borchers In what's being marketed as a "rebirth," Children of the Corn revisits the 80's classic that spawned 6 sequels and countless amounts of children to fear those long weekends in the country. There's a trend happening again in the Horror genre. A trend that makes a strong case that children are complete creeps. Not only are they capable of being annoying little brats but it seems that in every town, city, county or home, there's at least one twisted little monster, who in between playing with Trouble the pop-omatic bubble game dreams of popping your skull open and feasting upon the meat of your brain. Word of advice: Don't have kids and don't trust kids, they'll just try to kill you. Children of the Corn, if anything, reaffirms these wise words as well as gives us the much needed visceral satisfaction of brutal violence towards kiddies, »

The state of Iowa has shut down its tax incentive program for filmmakers and has launched a criminal investigation into the operations of the Iowa Film Office following the release of an accountant's review showing widespread abuse of the program. In one instance, director Bruce Isacson was able to purchase a new Range Rover for $61,000 by listing it as a production expense, a spokesman for the Iowa Economic Development Department said. Somewhat ironically, Isacson told the Des Moines Register last year that he had decided to film his movie South Dakota in Iowa because of the state's generous tax-incentive program. No mention of the film appears in the Internet Movie Database's (IMDb) listings, and Isacson has only one credit -- as an actor in a movie released in 1995. Another filmmaker, the horror film producer Donald Borchers, reportedly chalked up a $67,783 Mercedes Benz to his production costs for his TV movie version of Children of the Corn, which aired last month on SyFy. Neither filmmaker was accused of wrongdoing. However, the manager and staff of the Iowa Film Office were accused of failing to provide sufficient oversight of film projects and wrongly approving unqualified expenses. Tom Wheeler, who was hired in 2004 to head the Iowa Film Office, was fired last month. The state's decision to suspend the tax-incentive program has brought filmmaking to a halt in Iowa. Neil Wells, an actor who has worked on three recent films in the state, told the Register, "You don't shut down a whole industry because of a couple bad actors. ... [Gov. Chet Culver] has actually taken about $400 million away from Iowa's economy because filmmakers are starting to go elsewhere." »

What do the DVD release gods have in store for us today? This week's biggest releases would have to be the Jack Black/Michael Cera comedy Year One and Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on Blu-ray, but looking beyond that there are a handful of smaller movies worth checking out. Both Trick r' Treat and Assassination of a High School President are movies that ended up going direct to DVD despite fairly positive reviews, so now is your chance to check them out. Also out this week are two amazing documentaries, Anvil! The Story of Anvil and Not Quite Hollywood, plus Blu-ray releases for Audition, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, and some holiday classics including A Charlie Brown Christmas. Will you be buying or renting anything this week? Year One [1] (DVD, Blu-ray [2]) My Life in Ruins [3] (DVD, Blu-ray [4]) Trick 'r Treat [5] (DVD, Blu-ray [6]) Assassination of a High School President [7] Seventh Moon [8] (DVD, »

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Platinum Edition) I just posted my review of this one (read it here) and I tried to keep it as short as possible all while managing to gush all over it. Seriously, this baby is packed with goodies and the film simply looks spectacular as Walt Disney's first feature length animated film comes to life in high definition. Snow White is 72-years-old and boy does it age well.
I reviewed the two-disc edition (or three-disc if you count the included DVD version of the film), but there are a ton of additional versions to buy including the collector's pack featured in the image to the left and then one that comes with a bunch of stuffed toys. Oh, and if you buy it at Amazon you can enter the promotional code Snowhite and »

The Chinese proverbs warns you, "May your life be interesting," and today sure is an interesting day for DVD and Blu-Ray releases, to say the least.
This week sees the DVD releases of the much lauded The Children, as well as a pair of remakes, one long shelved, one a SyFy version of a Stephen King adaptation that's being remade elsewhere, neither much called for. Yes, Oct. 6 sees the release of It's Alive and Children Of The Corn.
For those with Blu-Ray players, Takashi Miike's deceptively vicious Audition sees its re-release in the high-def form. Miike's Japanese, and I can personally affirm that the Chinese proverb doesn't apply to this one. At least not until it's killer ending, which should shock and disgust like few others.
