If I were an executive at CBS, I would never want to do business with actor Mandy Patinkin again. Even though Mandy is a terrific actor and one of my personal favorites -- I loved him on Broadway in Evita and Sunday in the Park with George, not to mention on screen in The Princess Bride and Yentl -- his history with CBS is abominable.
He was an Emmy-winning star on Chicago Hope, then left after a couple of seasons to be closer to his family in New York. Okay, that was understandable. Then after getting Criminal Minds off to a great start, he walked out of that show, citing creative differences.
Apparently, someone has said let bygones be bygones because Mandy Patinkin will be a guest star on Three Rivers. Maybe because this is a very personal issue with Mandy, he's convinced the powers that be to let him return to the network, »

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey! (Please include your city and state and/or country.)
Q: I`m a huge fan of Futurama. I looked up Billy West, who does the voice of Fry and others on the show, and found out he had been in two animated gay series, Rick & Steve the Happiest Gay Couple in All the World and Queer Duck. He’s straight, right? Is there anything else gay about him and his career? – Terry, Sydney, Australia
A: West is indeed the go-to guy for animated voices, with an impressive resume that includes everything from the movie Space Jam (1996) (where he proved to be one of very few people who can effectively imitate the classic voices of Mel Blanc) to, yes, Bi-Polar Bear on Queer Duck (2006).
The voice of Futurama’s Fry is the closest to his “real” voice. And on Rick & Steve, »

The highlight of the star-studded A.M.P.A.S. tribute to the Bergmans was the surprise appearance of Barbra Streisand. (Photo: Todd Wawrychuk / ©A.M.P.A.S) By Mike Thomas
The Motion Picture Academy has been on a roll as of late, presenting some of the finest exhibits and screenings in its fabled history. The year began with a tribute to Academy founder Douglas Fairbanks featuring legendary film scholar Kevin Brownlow. In April there was a tribute to Milt Kahl, “The Animation Michelangelo,” that featured Brad Bird and others paying tribute to one of Disney’s premier character designers. Currently, there is an excellent display of cells and sketches highlighting the Japanese form of animation, “Anime!” (The Academy is to be commended for their continued celebration of that frequently neglected art of film-making). And last week, there was tribute to Joseph Mankewiecz, one of the finest screenwriters who »

Barbra Streisand is to share her thoughts about architecture in a new book, which will showcase her homes.
The singer/actress will chronicle the design and building of her new home in California, and look back at her other dream residences in A Passion For Design.
The Yentl star even revisits the modest Brooklyn, New York apartment she grew up in for the coffee table tome.
The book, which will hit stores in time for Christmas next year will be "the culmination and reflection of Barbra's love of American architecture", according to a press release from the publisher, Viking.
As well as writing the book, Streisand will share photographs she has taken.
She says, "Designing and building for me is about the creative process and transformation. One of the reasons I haven't made a movie since 2004 is because this last house was a five year, full-time job. Now that it's done, I'm thrilled to share it." »

Songwriters Alan and Marilyn Bergman, among whose compositions are "The Way We Were" and the song score for Yentl, will be the recipients of an Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences tribute on Friday, May 29, at 8 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The evening will be hosted by music producer and composer Quincy Jones, and will feature film clips, personal remembrances from the Bergmans’ colleagues and friends, and live performances of several Oscar-nominated songs. Lee Pfeiffer reports on Cinema Retro's fourth and final day at the festival.
Although the film festival was to conclude the following day with widescreen showings of The Electric Horseman and Year of the Dragon, this would be the last day Dave Worrall and I could attend. As such, we had to devote a good deal of time to business meetings and schmoozing with friends and colleagues. However, in the morning we attended Cineramacana, a fun potpourri of weird short films, odd reels and (inexplicably) a trailer for Yentl which only serves to remind us that middle-aged Barbra Streisand posing as a teenage boy was the least convincing casting since Duke Wayne played Ghengis Khan in The Conqueror. Oy vey! Couldn't someone have stopped this ludicrous vanity piece from going into production? This segment of the festival also presented a lovely nature film sans narration that was produced on a budget of fifty pounds! »

A visit to her father's grave gave Barbra Streisand the courage to direct 1983 movie Yentl.
In the newly-released Yentl DVD package, the singer/actress reveals she wasn't convinced she should be the one to direct the film, and held meetings with filmmakers like the late Claude Berri with a view to hiring someone else to direct her.
But then she visited her father's grave for the first time.
She reveals, "When I came home my brother sent me the picture of my arm around the tombstone. And I think it was (producer) Rusty Lemorande who said, ‘Oh, my God. Look at the picture.”
In the photo, the tombstone next to her father’s was for a person named Anshel, the name Streisand's Yentl character takes when she becomes a man.
She adds, "That was the sign - 'I have to direct it.'" »

Elizabeth Berkley in Showgirls: the film that inspired Whoopi Goldberg to say she hadn't seen this many poles abused since WWII.
In the run-up to this year’s Razzie nominations, to be announced Wednesday, January 21st for 2008’s “honorees” for the worst achievements in moviemaking, the longlist buzz is already getting press. If it’s any indication, 2008 must have been a stink-bomb banner year for movies as it’s rare for the press to report on the worst movies of the year just-passed, before the nominations are even announced.
Among the films emerging as leading contenders for 2008’s gold-plated raspberry statuette -- always bestowed on the eve of the “other” gold-plated statuette ceremony -- are: The Love Guru, Mike Myers’ laughless Bollywood debacle; Speed Racer, Disaster Movie, »
