James Bond Encyclopedia

By John Cork and Collin Stutz

334 Pages, Dk Publishing, $40

Nobody does it better. Dk Publishing continues to put out the best assortment of visual reference books on pop culture and as we near the holidays, they keep pumping out one must have collection after another.

Few literary figures have endured changing eras and tastes likes Ian Fleming’s spy, James Bond. Fleming created the spy in the 1950s and continued his exploits through the dozen novels and nine short stories before his death in 1964. He got to see his creation catch the attention of a world made uncomfortable by the Cold War, giving them a clear cut hero to root for as he traveled the world and dispatched the Red Menace in all its guises.

Bond has endured despite the constant change in performer, indelibly begun by Sean Connery and carried through by George Lazenby, Roger Moore, »

FilmShaft Diary: When Ed went to Frightfest

5 September 2009 4:02 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

For most of us the August Bank Holiday weekend means barbeques, beer on the village green and meeting up with the friends you’ve ignored for weeks but FilmShaft’s Ed Whitfield, having received no invitation to eat charcoaled meat went to London’s premier horror film festival instead. One week on, he’s finally ready to talk about what he saw there. Dare you read on?

I’m not a horror aficionado. Having cut my corneas on Huston, Hitchcock and Verhoven, there seemed to me something witless and crude about ninety percent of the genre’s staples. It was, from the perspective of a nervous boy who harboured night time fantasies about being eviscerated by burglars while his dear single mother was bludgeoned by their hands, and who still, in his thirties for God’s sake, bolts upright in bed at the odd creak, rustle or howl, never a genre that connoted entertainment. »

Michael Sheen as Blofeld for Bond 23...?

17 June 2009 12:10 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

We recently reported that Peter Morgan, who penned The Queen and Frost/Nixon, will be co-scripting the new James Bond movie with Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, and that Afghanistan might factor into the plot-line somehow.

Now comes word from The Guardian that Michael Sheen, who has collaborated in the past with Morgan on the aforementioned movies, is in negotiations to play Ernst Stavro Blofeld in Bond 23.

Blofeld back for Bond 23...? That's what the UK paper is reporting.

"Michael is hot property right now and it is felt that he's the right man to bring Blofeld back to life," an unnamed source revealed. "Michael was a Bond fan in his youth, so this would be a dream role for him."

Blofeld is the head of Spectre and has appeared in six previous James Bond installments: From Russia with Love (1963), Thunderball (1965), You Only Live Twice (1967), On Her Majesty's Secret Service »

Michael Sheen may revise role of Bond bad guy

17 June 2009 3:18 AM, PDT | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

James Bond’s arch enemy, Ernst Stavro Blofeld, may be resurrected, yet again, says the Guardian UK. Michael Sheen, of Frost/Nixon, The Queen, and most recently having finished filming the role of Aro in New Moon, is said to be negotiating the nemesis of the debonair, everlasting Bond 007. The character best known for his trademark companion white cat, Blofeld has been portrayed over the years by several actors including: Donald Pleasance (“You Only Live Twice”) Telly Savalas (“On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”) Charles Gray (“Diamonds Are Forever”) Max von Sydow (“Never Say Never Again”) Mike Myers has taken the character of Blofeld to a whole new level with “Dr. Evil” of the Austin Powers series with a scarred face and bald head. Sheen is said to be a fan of the Bond series, and his working relationship with writer Peter Morgan is a definite notch on his side. »

Michael Sheen ‘In Talks’ For ‘Bond’ Villain Blofeld

16 June 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

British actor Michael Sheen, who will be seen by millions this fall in “New Moon,” is reportedly in talks to join the James Bond franchise for yet another iconic role. According to an anonymous source, Sheen is up for the villainous part of Blofeld in the 23rd installment of the 007 series, which is currently being co-scripted by two-time Oscar-nominated writer Peter Morgan.

Morgan and Sheen have collaborated many times before, most memorably for “Frost/Nixon” and “The Queen,” in which he portrayed former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair. It’s possible that this link between writer and actor has led to speculative rumors of Sheen’s interest and involvement in the Bond film, but we’re hoping that it’s true. Apparently Sheen has been a fan of the 007 series since his youth, so he is likely crossing his fingers, as well.

Though Sheen is a well-respected actor, he is no stranger to mainstream franchises. »

DVD Playhouse—April 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Milk (Universal) Sean Penn deservedly captured his second Best Actor Oscar (and Dustin Lance Black a statuette for his original screenplay) in director Gus Van Sant’s portrait of San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to hold public office in the U.S. Alternately heartbreaking, infuriating and very funny, a film that both captures a bygone era and is still very timely. Fine support from Josh Brolin, Victor Garber, James Franco and Emile Hirsch. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Three featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS 5.1 surround.

Slumdog Millionaire (20th Century Fox) The Best Picture of 2008 is a kinetic, clever audience-pleaser about a determined lad (Dev Patel) from the slums of Mumbai, who has his chance at literal and financial redemption as a contestant on India’s version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Bond On Blu-ray: Wave 2 - Five New Entries

6 April 2009 3:12 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Finally I am getting around to typing this up as the Blu-rays covered in this second report on Fox's James Bond titles on Blu-ray were released in stores two weeks ago. Unfortunately a variety of pressing engagements and other work got in the way, but is it ever too late to talk James Bond? This time around there is a smorgasbord of titles to choose from including the most recent Bond, an infrequently seen Bond and three more original Bond classics to consider. Across the five titles we will see Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig all inhabiting the iconic British spy, which one is your favorite is up to you. Personally I have found Craig's Bond to be a highly entertaining twist. I thought Brosnan may have been best suited to play Bond, but his films didn't exactly give me much to work with. Connery is »

DVD: Review: Never Say Never Again

31 March 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

The James Bond movies can seem pretty hidebound at times, but the series has taken some chances over the years. As different actors have donned the tux, the Bond films have shifted between two-fisted action and outright camp, while spending a lot of time exploring the gray area between. That’s partly why the “outlier” Bond film Never Say Never Again is such a persistent disappointment. When Never Say Never Again was released in 1983, Roger Moore had been Bond for a decade, and the series had become progressively sillier. When Sean Connery agreed to step back into the role ... »

‘Never Say Never Again’ Review (Blu-Ray)

29 March 2009 10:01 PM, PDT | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

Sean Connery returns to Blu-Ray in his final James Bond movie. The story behind the making of “Never Say Never Again” is a story of Producer Jack Schwartzman one-man war to make a Bond feature without the backing of the studios. To accomplish this feat, he went back to basics by bringing the original Bond, Sean Connery, out of MI6 retirement. In a fight for Bond dominance, the major studios were actually releasing another James Bond movie at the same time. “Never Say Never Again” starts off oddly in an art imitates life fashion. Sean Connery had given up making Bond movies in order to shake the Bond label as an actor and move on to other roles. “Never Say Never Again” features an older Bond in semi-retirement. British Intelligence has moved on from using the Double 0’s, but a spry new M would like to keep Bond in shape. »

Never Say Never Again - DVD Review

24 March 2009 8:14 AM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

After being out of the role for over a decade, Sean Connery decided to step into the shoes of James Bond one last time. It seemed like a strange project to remake Thunderball, but some legal wrangling allowed it to happen. The even greater coup was snagging everyone.s favorite Bond to go into action one last time. James Bond (Sean Connery) is getting a bit long in the tooth. MI6 has a new M (Edward Fox) and he has little respect for Bond.s antics. He sends Bond to a health clinic to eliminate all his .free radicals.. Bond happens upon a masochistic nurse and a patient with an odd eye. We learn that the naughty nurse is assassin »

Samuel L. Jackson signs as Nick Fury -- nine times!

26 February 2009 3:57 AM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Feel the Fury of SamJack!

The Hollywood Reporter tells us that Samuel L. Jackson has signed an unprecedented nine-picture deal to play Colonel Nick Fury, director of S.H.I.E.L.D., in a series of Marvel movies that include Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, The Avengers and its sequels.

Also on the table is the possibility of toplining a S.H.I.E.L.D. movie, which is in development.

Jackson, the unoffical model for the Marvel Ultimate version of Nick Fury, first appeared at the end of Iron Man and was expected to be part of the Iron Man sequel, but as Marvel negotiated with its cast, deals proved hard to come by. Terrence Howard was replaced by Don Cheadle. Mickey Rourke still doesn't have a deal for the part of a villain despite almost two months of negotiations.

But now, Jackson has signed for a »
