In Defense Of Giallo...

I like most horror fans have been clamoring for Dario Argento to deliver us something as interesting and exciting as some of his early works. I love stuff like Opera, Phenomena (or Creepers as I remember renting it as a kid), Tenebre (aka Unsane), Deep Red and of course Susperia. Hell, I even love Jenifer, his episode for the first season of Masters Of Horror, but... aside from that, I really haven't enjoyed Dario's work in quite some time.

With that said, I was able to get my hands on the script that Jim Agnew & Sean Keller wrote for Giallo shortly after they wrapped shooting last year. I literally read it impatiently in one sitting. I truly believe it to be a terrific script and it gave me hope that Dario could potentially deliver his best film if only he could translate this script to film properly. Trailer Park: Vampires and Aliens and Slashers (Oh My!)

Jennifer's Body

Diablo Cody wrote the script for this one in which Megan Fox plays a high school girl who is possessed by a demon and inflicts her wrath upon her male classmates. The trailer seems to imply that she's a vampire but most of the descriptions I've found are avoiding the "V" word. Amanda Seyfried plays Jennifer's best friend who must put a stop to the evil. You can check out Jennifer's Body on September 18.

District 9

There's a second trailer for this extraterrestrials as refugees flick produced by Peter Jackson. You see a little more of the aliens but they're quick glances. We do get come interesting glimpses of the alien technology and with Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen making so much money I have to figure the public is going to like all the robots on display here. The aliens start slumming on August 14.

It should be difficult for true horror fans to discuss the genre and not mention influential veteran Dario Argento. The Italian master has dabbled in various material during his lengthy career (he co-wrote Leone's Once Upon A Time In The West, for example), but is undoubtedly best known for his "giallo" works like Suspiria, Tenebre, Deep Red and Inferno. Woh NYC ’09: Dario Argento Comes to New York (with Video!)

He’s been called everything from the Maestro of the Macabre and the Master of Italian Horror to the “Garlic Flavored Hitchcock”, but true horror fans know him as simply Argento. Last weekend at Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors, Manhattan’s Jacob K. Javitz Convention Center was abuzz over the mere notion of his pending presence, even overshadowing the likes of horror visionaries Tobe Hooper and Guillermo Del Toro.

15 Bloody Box Sets

The deeper I delve into writing, the more movies and literature I digest. My biggest obstacle at this point is not finding the material, it’s finding the time to watch it, and the money to purchase it all. After consistently emptying my bank account on countless DVD’s and books over the last few months, I really started to ask myself one question: How the hell can I pick all this stuff up quickly and affordably?
