Does 3D TV leave you feeling a bit flat?

11 November 2009 6:37 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

It sounds great – but can anyone take 3D television seriously while wearing a pair of cardboard glasses?

Next week Channel 4 has got a rash of 3D programming on offer: including The Queen in 3D, in case those boring 2D pictures on stamps were leaving you a little cold; Derren Brown hosting a 3D magic spectacular so you can check where those wires/podiums/lottery balls are really situated; Flesh for Frankenstein and Friday the 13th part III for horror fans; and a 3D Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus concert for, um, horror fans. Sorry, children.

Exciting! Things (or indeed monarchs) leaping out of the set and into your living room. HD is all well and good - or not even that good: discuss - but how much more appealing is the idea of watching things in 3D? It's all futuristic, and fantastic and not at all like it was in the »

C'mon Hollywood #228

...to 3-D or not to 3-D? by J.A. Hamilton Now I won.t go as far as to say I dislike the concept of 3-D, as I find it to be a cool feature once in awhile (popping up in Freddy.S Dead when I was in High School or in Order Of The Phoenix). I.d also noticed that Jaws 3 and even Friday The 13th part 3 featured the use of 3-D technology back in the day (though they were both before my time). In that capacity, I find 3-D interesting. When anything comes knocking once in awhile it... »

Satanic Panic (DVD Review)

9 October 2009 11:20 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Satanic Panic (out on DVD next week from Celebrity Video) is named after the wave of paranoia that swept across the U.S. in the early ’80s, inspired by reports and rumors that adults and children were being kidnapped by devil-worshipping cults and subjected to torturous rituals and sacrifice. It’s a potentially provocative and eerie premise for a filmmaker to build on—but here, writer/director Marc Selz doesn’t really try.

Portions of the movie’s first third have the right idea, beginning in vérité/interview style as a fruity self-confessed Satanist defending his own nonviolent lifestyle is intercut with survivors recounting their ordeals at cultists’ hands. The most evocative material follows, as a man shows the camera around his neighborhood of abandoned, boarded-up homes, the residents all having fled in fear of local satanic activities. Sadly, Selz then goes schlocky, cutting to the same guy hanging naked in a basement, »

A Different Halloween 3D Director Announced

10 September 2009 3:10 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Last week it was rumored that director Steve Miner (Halloween H20, Friday the 13th Part 3) was returning to the rebooted franchise that Rob Zombie was vacating, but it looks like The Weinstein Co.would rather hire a director who has worked with 3-D technology more recently than 1982. Variety reports that Patrick Lussier (My Bloody Valentine 3-D) is negotiating with the Weinsteins' horror studio, Dimension Films, to take Halloween's psychotic killer Michael Myers into the third dimension.

The Weinsteins and Dimension have been experiencing some turbulent financial times. After Halloween II lost its opening weekend to The Final Destination, the Weinsteins clearly wanted a sure bet for Halloween 3-D. Lussier's Valentine grossed $51 million at the box office, about three times its budget, which is a good sign for a company that's trying to stay alive financially alongside horror movies like the upcoming Piranha 3-D and Scream 4.

Rumor: Director Found For Halloween 3D?!

2 September 2009 12:54 AM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

Late in the weekend, The Weinstein Company announced it's intentions to continue the Halloween franchise with Halloween 3D. And not only would they be aiming to get a 3D Michael Myers movie in theaters by next summer, but it'll be a different take from what Rob Zombie had established with his 2 Halloween flicks. In that last post, it was hinted that "the studio was in negotiations with a new director, who has experience in horror." Rumor going round through all the other horror outlets is that it may be Steve Miner.

Steve Miner is no stranger to the genre, nor to Michael Myers. He directed Halloween: 20 Years Later aka H20 starring Jamie Lee Curtis. His other genre credits include the recent Day Of The Dead remake, Friday The 13th Part 2 and Lake Placid. Hell, he's got 3D experience having also directed Friday The 13th Part 3.

Weinsteins Going Back To Former Halloween Director For Halloween 3D?

1 September 2009 12:48 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Yesterday a tipster started letterbombing the inboxes of horror editors with an unconfirmed bit of news about a director for Halloween 3D, essentially replacing Rob Zombie, who'll be moving on to The Blob and hopefully Tyrannosaurus Rex. The news isn't even 'news' yet, as it remains speculative. But it's an interesting idea, as the director is someone who has experience with the Halloween fanchise already, and has also had a hand in both 3D and another long-running horror series. The name, after the break... The first time Dimension revived the Halloween franchise, with Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (meant to be a sequel to the original Halloween II, ignoring the films that came after), the company turned to Steve Miner. He'd previously been allied with a rival franchise, directing Friday the 13th Part II and Friday the 13th Part III, the latter in 3D That being the case, he's more »

Halloween 3-D May Have a Director

1 September 2009 9:25 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

When the Weinstein Co. announced Halloween 3-D, they said they were negotiating with an experienced horror director, but didn't reference the director by name. According to Bloody-Disgusting, that unnamed director could likely be Steve Miner, the director of Halloween: H2O and Friday the 13th Part 2 and 3.

The Weinstein Co. promised a director for Halloween 3-D that would provide a "different take" on the series, which is not what Miner is famous for, but The Weinstein Co.'s "different take" could just mean "something other than what Rob Zombie did in Halloween II."

Until the Weinstein Co. or Dimension Films confirms the hiring, Miner is merely a rumor, but considering Miner's experience with slasher movies, including making them in 3-D, as he did with Friday the 13th Part 3, Miner certainly seems like a solid choice who could bring some stability to a growing, rebooted horror franchise.

FEARnet's Guide to 3D Horror, Part 2

26 June 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news »

In Part 1, we looked back at the Golden Age of 3D Horror.  Now let's fast-forward to… The 1980's Revival (the tech got better, the movies got worse) Parasite (1982) Dreary sci-fi nonsense about a monster burrowing in and out of various denizens inhabiting post-apocalyptic Earth.  Why Watch It: It features a very young Demi Moore in her first movie, and the slimy title creature was created by Stan Winston...but that's about it. Friday The 13th Part III (1982) Actually one of the weaker entries in the saga, but the 3D deaths are fun.  Why Watch It:  It sets the scene for Part IV, one of the best in the series, plus this is the movie... »

Friday The 13th Parts 1-3 (Blu-ray Reviews)

17 June 2009 8:14 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Yesterday, the Blu-ray editions of Friday The 13th  Parts 2 & 3 were released, so in addition to reviewing those I thought I’d go for the trifecta and take a look back at the recently released Blu-ray version of the original film, which featured the much heralded “Uncut” version in all it’s high-def glory.

As far as the films themselves, I’ll stay away from giving yet another subjective opinion on their status as cinema classics, and instead focus on the quality of the Blu-Ray presentation and extra features included with the releases.  All three are well-done 1080p transfers, and gave me a completely new appreciation for the format (in regards to older, low budget horror films).  Although the films (in particular Part 1) are still a bit rough-looking due to budget and the technology available at the time they were shot, these transfers really bring new life to the gory goings on at Camp Crystal Lake. »

DVD Playhouse—June 2009

By

Allen Gardner

The International (Sony) An Interpol agent (Clive Owen) joins forces with a Manhattan D.A. (Naomi Watts) to bring down an arms dealing ring and a corrupt global banking cartel that’s funding them. Superlative thriller was oddly ignored by critics and audiences alike, but expertly blends intelligence (courtesy screenwriter Eric Warren Singer’s masterfully-crafted script) and full-throttle action (director Tom Tykwer stages one of the great film shoot-outs in New York’s iconic Guggenheim Museum), making this dynamite thriller reminiscent of the best work from masters such as John Frankenheimer and Robert Aldrich. Armin Mueller-Stahl is wonderful as a world-weary covert op. Bonuses: Extended scene; Featurettes; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.

The Jack Lemmon Film Collection(Sony) Five films from the two-time Oscar winning actor, focusing on his early career: Phfft! is a zippy comedy from 1954, one of Lemmon’s earliest films, in which »

Friday The 13th: Body counts, boobies and bloody good quotes

23 February 2009 7:50 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Well, it’s been seven years since Jason Voorhees chopped up foolish teens exclusively. Sure he shared screen time with Freddy Krueger in 2003’s crossover Freddy Vs Jason, yes he accumulated quite the body count in the film, yes it was a lot of fun, and yes the film was pretty damn successful, but diehard fans such as myself certainly missed that special “alone time” with Mr. Voorhees. Now Jason is back, solely stealing the spotlight and the lives of reckless youngins, and despite a mostly negative critical response and dismal box office staying power, he's still one massive murdering machine.

Over the last 29 years Jason has claimed more victims than even imaginable. From random teens, to strange drifters, to diner employees, Jason has eliminated just about everyone to (unluckily) grace the big screen with the masked menace. As a result of Voorhees’ obnoxious kill rate, fans have pondered the »

Reviewing the 'Friday the 13th' DVD Deluxe Editions

3 February 2009 1:50 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Just about everyone who is evenly slightly versed in pop culture knows who Jason Vorhees is. Even those who have never seen a Friday the 13th film are familiar with the name. Jason's iconic status as a serial killer has him joining the ranks of serial killers the likes of which only Michael Meyers and Freddy Krueger have achieved. Because everything old is suddenly new again, New Line Cinema and Paramount Pictures are co-producing a remake of the 1980 low budget slasher flick. It hits theaters this Friday, February 13 (big surprise) and both studios are undoubtedly already counting the box office dollars in their minds even though not a single ticket has been sold. As the date nears, Paramount has grabbed some of the original films out of their vault and given them slick new DVD releases, the first one even hitting Blu-ray (read Brad's review of that one here »
