Franz Seitz, who collaborated with Volker Schlondorff on the script of 'The Tin Drum', directed this brilliant adaptation of Thomas Mann's novel. When a work of art satisfies and stimulates one emotionally, visually, sensually and intellectually, it is a masterpiece. This is enough said, but I can add that it grabs one by the gonads, kicks one in the stomach, punches one in the chest and shoots one through the head. Within minutes one forgets that Jon Finch (who starred in the title role of Polanski's 'Macbeth') is dubbed into German. Sheer, undiluted brilliance and a must see for any serious (art) film lover. Hopefully it's available on video or DVD somewhere in the world... If it is, please notify me.
