Aff Review: Poliwood

1 November 2009 12:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

It's not uncommon to hear people discussing -- or complaining about -- the ways in which Hollywood celebrities are involved in politics, whether they're airing their opinions during a concert or speaking in public on behalf of a politician. Barry Levinson (Diner, Good Morning Vietnam) thought this was an interesting enough topic to address in his documentary Poliwood, which focuses on the 2008 national Democratic and Republican conventions. Unfortunately, the documentary shows us little that we haven't already seen, and tends to preach to the converted.

Poliwood is subtitled "a Barry Levinson film essay," which signals us that this will be a more personal style of documentary. Levinson opens the movie with shots from his 1990 feature film Avalon and uses this footage to discuss the ways American lives have changed because of television. His focus is on the Creative Coalition, a non-partisan organization of celebrities that focuses on issues such as arts education. »

From Soap Stars to Superstars

1 September 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | Getback - TV | See recent Getback - TV news »

On September 18 the final episode of the record-breaking soap "Guiding Light" will air on CBS. The show is in "The Guinness Book of World Records" as both the longest-running soap opera and the longest-running drama in television history. It started as a radio show in 1937 and moved to TV in 1952. Now, 72 years later, the beacon of daytime is going dim. But "Guiding Light" has more than longevity as its claim to fame; the soap also introduced the world to some of our biggest stars.

From Darth Vader himself - James Earl Jones - to "CSI: New York's" Melina Kanakaredes and "Heroes'" Hayden Panettiere, many acclaimed big- and small-screen actors got their start on "Guiding Light." Kevin Bacon did a brief stint on "Gl" as T.J. Werner (after a season on "Search for Tomorrow") before the films "Diner" and "Footloose" made him a movie star.

Don Cheadle Says Thor Works At A Diner, Eats Iron Man: The MTV Quote Of The Day

18 August 2009 2:15 PM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

"Thor and Hulk both make an appearance in this film. They work at a diner. You heard it hear first. Thor is actually in the movie. He eats Tony Stark. He consumes him into his godlike belly and spews him into the world. He turns into stars actually. It's a strange twist. I don't know that they’re going to stay with it. It may not make it to the final cut, but it was cool to see filmed."

-Don Cheadle joking about surprise guests and plot developments in "Iron Man 2." The actor spoke to MTV News a few weeks ago at San Diego Comic-Con, where he was already promoting the 2010 sequel. In the film, he takes over the role played by Terrence Howard in the first "Iron Man," joining Robert Downey, Jr., Mickey Rourke and Scarlett Johansson in the all-star cast. Sixty-Six Adaptation is Next for Director Barry Levinson

1 May 2009 12:06 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Might this finally be the comeback project for Barry Levinson? Since Bandits in 2001, most of the director's films haven't been big hitters, either at the box office or with critics. Levinson is now set to adapt his own novel titled "Sixty-Six" that was first published in 2003. The coming of age story, set in 1966 Baltimore, is about a group of high school buddies trying to cope with grown-up life on the eve of significant historical events like the counterculture movement and the war in Vietnam. Levinson is writing the script and will direct the adaptation. He plans on financing the movie independently will start casting soon. Sixty-Six will complete an informal series in which Levinson examines the social dynamics in Baltimore at various periods throughout the 20th century. He kicked that off with 1983's Diner, set in the Baltimore of 1959, and covered related ground in Avalon (1990), Tin ... »

Kevin Bacon: Hollywood’s Long Distance Runner

Memo to young stars: If you want to know how to manage an acting career, study the project choices of Kevin Bacon. After Footloose, he was as big as any of the young stars of the 80s, but, a few years later, deftly avoided being lumped in with the pop culture relics of a fading decade by a small role he took in 1991’s JFK, for director Oliver Stone, then at the height of his filmmaking, and press-creating, powers. Bacon’s screen time was brief as gay hustler Willie O’Keefe, »

No Degrees of Separation

28 February 2009 4:52 AM, PST | www.culturecatch.com | See recent CultureCatch news »

Six degrees, two degrees, no degrees. Kevin Bacon walks amongst us. If you live in N.Y.C. you will have seen him here or there. Ditto if you surf your TV for late night moving pictures. He is a chameleon in some ways. Appears in movies, maybe not in the forefront, that have defined Americans and our culture in every decade he has worked, and he has worked plenty, although you'd be hard-pressed to find fans and critics raining the same praise on him as they do his peer Sean Penn. Too bad, because he has maintained a steady and dignified career. From highbrow dramas to comedies, science fiction to horror flicks, and even animation (the voice of Balto). From Animal House in 1978, the original Friday the 13th in 1980, not to mention Diner and Footloose from that same decade, even my son's favorite dark monster comedy Tremors in 1990.

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey!

Q: Both the men on The New Adventures of Old Christine ping my gaydar (and are really cute, but that’s a different issue). Is either gay? – Randy, Lakewood, Co

Clark Gregg (left) and Hamish Linklater with Julia Louis-Dreyfuss

A: Neither Clark Gregg nor Hamish Linklater are gay. Both are married to women — Dirty Dancing’s Jennifer Grey in the case of Gregg.

Linklater did play a gay man in 2006 opposite Brothers & Sisters’ Luke Macfarlane (also playing gay) in The Busy World Is Hushed, a play at New York’s Playwrights Horizons. Gregg, meanwhile, played a gay guy on a 2003 episode of Will & Grace.

Q: Mickey Rourke????? Puh-leeeeeze! – Tommy, New Haven, Ct

A: You make an extremely trenchant point, Tommy. All the Monkey »
