‘Survival of the Dead’ Lands a Release Date

As much flack as George A. Romero got for his poorly received Diary of the Dead, he’s still one of the most talented and singular voices in the business. His living dead flicks have always been his excuse to talk about current social issues that bother him, and he does so with style, which is why I can’t wait for his next: Survival of the Dead.
Luckily for us, Magnet Releasing has picked up Survival and scheduled it for a Spring release date — and a month earlier on video on demand networks.
From what I’ve heard about Survival of the Dead, Romero has grounded his latest zombie feature in a Western setting, which seems pretty nifty. Variety has a pretty good breakdown of plot description:
“Two powerful families maintain a semblance of order in the wake of the zombie holocaust. But as the inhabitants slowly die off,

The Crazies Poster is Remarkably Sane

George Romero’s got two categories, two modes of operating: the guy makes masterpieces and extremely flawed films with great ideas. The Crazies (one of the director’s lesser known works that was mashed together with Day of the Dead by Danny Boyle to create 28 Days Later) belongs in the latter category alongside Knightriders and Martin.
The central concept at work, however — biological infection leading people to madness — is one large enough to warrant a reworking by director Breck Eisner (Sahara) and screenwriter Scott Kosar (The Amityville Horror remake). Scheduled for release in February, 2010 — and barely publicized thus far — the new Crazies will star Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell.
Hopefully we’ll see a trailer soon that shows a little more imagination than this poster, which is neither crazy nor indicative of how close Eisner/Kosar are sticking to Romero’s original work.

Fantastic Fest 09: Romero Discusses the Future of the Dead

Fantastic Fest's Saturday night screening of the American premiere of George A. Romero's Survival of the Dead (review here) saw a packed house abuzz with anticipation about what the godfather of the zombie subgenre had come up with this time. As a bonus, we also received a little bit of information about what he might be coming up with next.
Prior to the movie being shown, Romero greeted the crowd (who returned the favor with rousing applause and a standing ovation) and participated in a Q&A. As you'd expect considering most of us hadn't seen Survival yet, the topics were general in nature rather than specific about the film, which resulted in a few choice bits of information floating out.
In the midst of a couple of questions about all the remakes of and sequels to his earlier work -- either by himself or others -- 1981's Knightriders came up.

You may not have heard of The 4th Reich yet, but soon you’ll be hearing much more along with news of the film’s director, Shaun Robert Smith.
The film, which begins production in April, is the first feature film from Smith, whose short film The Soldier displayed an excellent knack of cinematography and suspense.
It also won a small boatload of awards and gained a national theatrical release in the UK.
You can watch The Soldier here.
The short film forms a sort of foundation for The 4th Reich.
From the official synopsis for the film:
June 1944, after the glorious victory on D-day, the armies of the combined allied forces begin their long push to Berlin with the aim of bringing down Hitler and the despised Nazi regime of the Third Reich.
But buried deep in secret files German Reichstag, is the chilling reality of Hitler’s plan

There are certain directors whose represent absolutely pivotal moments in filmmaking. People like Griffith, Welles, Coppola and Scorcese have contributed to film in a way that has shaped the entire medium and changed the game. But there are also directors who represent pivotal moments of genre evolution: George Lucas and science fiction, John McTiernan and action pictures. Horror has a list of absolutely essential directors as long as your arm, as well. People like Tod Browning, James Whale, Roger Corman and George A. Romero. There are more to be sure, but in 1968, the rules of the game changed forever.
Romero's apocalyptic Night of the Living Dead, though dismissed by many as a schlocky trash, marks the moment that the counter culture took over independent horror and steered it away from the cheap vaudeville antics of American Indepedent Pictures and into a gritty new era that was as vital and prolific
